Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

The figures clearly show that his tactics provided the platform to control the game and create shots on goal and goalscoring chances.

What the figures dont show is that we contrived to miss several good chances to score, got boned by VAR on their second and Ederson turned into Rita Fairclough for their third.

The platform was there, the players didn't convert that into a win.

The team selection is still on Pep. We had nothing going forward, despite what the numbers might say. No flow, and he waited a fkng hour to change his tactics. He did so many mistakes tonight I don’t know where to start.

Can I just remind people that we had the second best defence in the League with only 2 more goals conceded than the Dippers with Ederson winning the Golden Glove award. I wouldn't call that an absolute mess?

The goals we concede are comical. No other teams concede as many easy goals as us. I bet we are near the top of goals conceded from chances created table. The amount of possession we have we shouldn’t be conceding many goals, yet we ship comical schoolboy goals game after game. One ball over the top, Goal.

Fucking hate the competition, literally feel fuck all for it so I'm genuinely not arsed.

Typical City tonight with weird selections, shit finishing, VAR and mistakes but make no mistake, no fucker is beating Bayern.
Hate it myself, but I’m sure it’s because it’s so so frustrating. To the point of screaming. The sorry thing is I actually thought it’s this year it’s City’s. :(

How many times has Pep picked a bizarre team only for us to win 5-0 where we're the I told you so comments then?

Poor finishing and gifted goals are not the fault of the Manager.

no agree and that was part of the problem - Jesus, Sterling, Ederson Lapotre and Walker all with individual errors are not peps fault BUT he set the team up very wrong and nullified us who are normally one of the most creative teams in the world to the point that we had zero shots on goal from open play in the first half -and a very pedestrian midfiled that just gave the game to Lyon.

Id also question him on the individual decision to play Garcia who has already said he doesnt want to be here at centre half - Ferna did well vs Madrid and if not that you have to play Stones (as much maligned as he is)...Garcia's tackle for the first goal would have fitted in very nicely in last nights game where Barca got murdered by Bayern

Pep got it wrong.

By the time he changed it we had 30 min left, and were 1-0 down. More importantly he'd given the opposition belief, whilst at the same time knocking the confidence of our own team. Yet we still had some good chances, Jesus volley and Sterling sitter, to keep in the game.

what’s even more disappointing is that we made a sub, looked instantly better went 1-1 and then did fuck all....why didn’t he know the right changes to make to consolidate and move on.

I said they fucked us over,,they showed and discussed the ref going to blow, walton said it was a foul, how much exp!a nation do you neec, they also said to pep that va r has got us again, pep declined to comment

So how did we embarrass UEFA then?

They may be embarrassing themselves- but what did we do that embarrassed them?

The very least you do as a football club is give everything you can as a football club to get through to a Champions League semi-final.

Barcelona were a complete joke last night but they were just a team at the end of their line. We on the other hand didn't even play our best team. This is too big a mistake to forgive. It's not about making mistakes and accepting them. You just simply can not manage a team any more because everyone knows you cost us the game. I hope City have the guts to sack him.
Whilst I can take your point, replace him with?
Answer that well, and I have a new hero.
:P

Wow, just wow. You're going to wake up with a sore head and regret in the morning.

Or down the side.

True, but we do give away some absolutely shocking goals. Think maybe the defensive stats are padded a bit by the fact that we completely dominate possession against most sides. Whenever we're put under a bit of pressure, we rarely stand up to it. maybe I'm being harsh, but I can't really think of our last really impressive defensive display?
Don't get me wrong I don't think we're Milan with Baresi and Maldini but when we get the CB we've needed all season due to not replacing Kompany and hopefully have a fully fit Laporte all season we'll see a massive improvement.

To be honest to get a Golden Glove and only concede 35 all season is a minor miracle considering the circumstances I've just stated?

Only KdB can hold his head up from that performance. A pedestrian unimaginative line up that results in defeat after defeat to any half decent side . Sorry Pep is not a genius .His ego and the voices he hears may tell him he is but his time has come and gone as his playbook of gimmicks have all been sussed. If he is a genius then what the hell does that make OGS who repeatedly beats him? If

Sterling's world class, but he's not in the elite bracket for me. And for reference, players like Salah and Mane are in the same tier as Sterling for me. Big game players are Kun, Kev, Bale, Ramos, Ronaldo, Messi and so on. Doesn't matter if the entire team is dogshit around then, they will always turn up, especially in the biggest games. Look at Kev. His performances against mid-table sides are 9/10 but you put him against a big club and suddenly he's performing at 12/10. An elite player for me is one who is world class AND never buckles under pressure, especially in the big games.
Sterling is not at all world class, he's a very good player that's it.

To be honest, the studio analyses were pretty much on the money for once. Carragher, Rio, Joe Hart.

Surprised that some blues still won't accept the elephant in the room when it comes to CL.

Sorry to make the point twice but on a reply I saw in the pub as the ball went through the Lyon guys leg I saw it clip his ankle. Me and my mate both shouted it touched his ankle and so off side. Still not home so not seen proper reply.

It didn't touch his ankle. I think it's a weird rule, but it wasn't offside either (if you're stepping over the ball then I don't know what you're meant to do as a defender, but alas). Honestly, I think the foul was a coin flip (I'd understand if it was given, but it wasn't the travesty the commentators were making out).

‘Sack him’? Drink talking I hope.

Delusional.

Got to admit I thought exactly the same, not seen a replay giving clarity either way.

Fair points but I think it's mainly Pep coming in for all the flak with some suggesting his time is up. Can't go along with that.

Another champions league knockout game, another out of nowhere tactic we are clearly not used to playing and another early elimination to a side we should be beating in second gear. He just doesn’t learn does he?

You can bemoan the Laporte foul not being given, the jaw dropping sterling miss or the Ederson fumble as much as we like but this is entirely on Pep. We spent 55 minutes of a champions league quarter final playing in an unfamiliar formation doing absolutely nothing. the players just did what Pep asked, it’s just what he asked for was shite. We gave ourselves 35 minutes and a goal disadvantage to win and it wasn’t enough. If we had played our normal game from the start I’m certain we stroll that even if all those things still happen towards the end. it was ours for the taking this year all we had to do was turn up and play our normal game to a high standard and we beat them. Credit to Lyon not taking anything from them but they wasn’t even that good, they played like a mid table French team, we simply beat ourselves yet again.

I don’t fear coming up against any other side or player pre match in these games, i fear Pep having a crazy idea and beating ourselves. Why isn’t there somebody within his staff that can pull him aside and tell him not to overthink and change things in these big games? It’s going to keep happening.
He went to arsenal.
