Lyon CL QF Post-Match Thread

Pep's at a crossroads now.

Is he aging and going down the Mourinho route or rather learning from his mistakes and improving further as a manager?

The pace and physicality of the game are growing with every season and Pep's philosophy might need a substantial upgrade now with giving pace and energy a more central role. The games against Real indicated that Pep understood those needs quite well but the performances against Arsenal and Lyon felt like huge setbacks.
What happened to the all or nothing Pep when he said to the players,”you have to learn to play football with courage”. Well Pep didn’t show a lot of courage last night.

KDB in last nights system looked very isolated and short of options.
I am worried Pep is killing KDB.

Not joking either.

He expects too much from KDB. He is also nearly 30 years old.

Rodri, and Gundogan swan around midfield doing their "Driving Miss Daisy" cameos, pass, pass, pass,,back pass triangle pass,Never moving more than 6 feet in any direction.

Whilst KDB is running his bollocks off trying to make shit happen.

He is starting to look frustrated if i am being honest.

He needs someone to help with the workload, Rodri, and Gundgan and their pointless going nowhere fast Ball retention are not the answer,He needs a talented younger midfield player to help out, like that Phil fella we regularly have sat on the Bench chomping at the Bit.

Maybe they are a bit better than 7th in a pub league suggests

But if we had concentrated on our own strengths rather than ludicrously worrying about combating a far inferior side, we’d have brushed them aside with ease

Where does this bollocks come from?

Did you not see the Arsenal game where we got done by a team using exactly Lyons tactics and formation? Did you not see the Norwich game, Wolves, Spurs, United, Southampton?

Lyon are better than all of them. There's every chance we lost just as easily in a 433.

Pep doesn't make these changes for a laugh, he does it because we've got massive weaknesses that good teams have exploited all season.

I cannot understand the deluded arrogance to think we would have been untouchable in a 433 when we have seen its not true all season long.

People keep repeating this but it is bollocks.

Lyon are the second best team in France, the had a disastrous managerial appointment in Sylvinio who dropped them down to 17th, but as soon as Garcia came in they surged back up the table and if the season hadn't been curtailed by covid, they'd have finished in the top 4 like they always do.

They beat Juventus a week ago and took PSG all the way to penalties a week before that.

They are a good side.

How is it bollocks? They finished 7th in their league and were 16 points from the 2nd place team. They are clearly not the 2nd best team in France. They managed to win 4 out of their last 10 games in their league.

By your logic, is United the 2nd best team from England considering their massive improvement in the league and having comfortably beaten us?

They're a good side but nowhere near us in terms of quality. Last night is all on the manager and his decisions.

Hate to say it....but Pep's record in the CL with us has been an absolute embarrassment. Not even a CL semi-final in 4 years. Think about that.....

We have not been in the top 4 European sides for a single time under Pep. Even Pellegrini managed it with us, once.
We could have got into the final that year too, had we attacked more.
Still annoys me that.

What I did see is when we went to 433 we pulverised them for 20 minutes, equalised and were almost certainly going to go on to win the game until UEFA were gift wrapped the perfect opportunity to get their revenge

Even after that we battered them and would have taken it to extra time but for the miss of the century
