Kalidou Koulibaly

It’s been a while since we bought from the top table and it’s about time we start again.
Major deal and it should solidify our back line massively. Him and Laporte together should be unreal.

Should be... Yeah let’s fkn hope so, haha.
I don’t want to see a bad start of this partnership. Imagine matchweek one and we face Chelsea, United or Liverpool and concede right away. I really hope we get a good start. That’s so important.

I’m happy with this as he seems clearly first choice.

He has experience, great fitness record etc.

Agreed it is a signing that would have been better 2/3 years ago but would have been over £100 million.

Ake and KK seriously are an up-grade on Otamendi, Stones and I assume Garcia.

Fern becomes the 4th CB and a youth player to step up for Garcia.

It wasn't just because our defence that we didn't mount a challenge this season though. It was mostly because we had too many games where we didn't take our chances.
For next season we already have Aké and then hopefully Laporte can stay fit. I'm far from convinced that Koulibaly is a huge upgrade on Stones for example. I haven't watched him a lot but every time I watched him he's been awful and according to those who watch him every week in Serie A he's had a poor season. He's 29 years old and 70m is a huge investment. I'd much rather splash 100m out for Upamecano now instead of getting Koulibaly for 70.

Wow. Can you explain why as Stones hasn't been good for a long while

No you can't but it'd help if we had decent defenders who could.
It'd also help if we got 14 penalties a season to make the breakthrough or to get back into the game. It'd also help if we attacked with more pace and width. There's a lot of things that could help.

Really sceptical about this deal, seems to be a lot of money for a guy who will be over the hill in a 2 years or so.

Not entirely true, though i do agree to an extent. Think of the games where we missed those chances. Norwich, southampton, wolves both games, Lyon, Chelsea, United away, we made awful defensive mistakes to gift the opposition goals. We need to be more clinical, but lets not get away from the fact that when put under pressure at the back we have been absolutely shocking. Getting a strong right sided CB to partner Laporte is absolutely critical and if we don't, we will have the same defensive woes we had this season gone.
Otamendi needs to go but apart from him I actually don't think our centre backs have been a huge problem. Ederson hasn't had a good season, Laporte hasn't been good since his comeback our left backs have had a poor season. While the position definitely needs strengthening long term, I'm not that sure Koulibaly is the answer. If we buy Kouilibaly there's no chance we'll go for Upamecano next season unless Kouli has a shocking season, and that will hurt us more long term. If we buy Koulibaly we'll be stuck with him for a few years, and I'm not really convinced that we'll be happy to be stuck with him.

If we sign KK we're back in the running for the title simple as that.

I am surprised that no one else is in for him. Thiago Silva is retiring. Barcelona are a defensive mess. Ramos is getting on, as is Boateng. Meanwhile Utd need another centreback. If I were City I'd move fast on this.

Do this deal, get Angelino back. Shutters down. Window done.

Our name isn't United that's why we don't get the pens. We have plenty of pace in the side but pace doesn't work very well against a compact 11 :)

We concede with pretty much every shot we are faced with. I'm also not interested in that bollocks stat number of expected goals against I see how bad we defend with my own eyes. When Liverpool won the league they'd conceded 20 goals in 32 games after it they conceded 12 in 6 I think they relaxed a little don't u?
I think our pressing from the front has been much worse this season which have affected our defensive performances. Of course the probably relaxed a bit, at the same time they were very lucky in their first 32 games conceding way less goals than they should have, and not thanks to Alison saving them but thanks to the opponents missing the target.

I still rate Stones and think that if he can stay injury free he'll be good enough for us. Of course if his form is that same that its been for the last 1,5 years then Koulibaly will (hopefully) prove to be a upgrade but I think Stones will come good. And while Koulibaly obviously is a good centre back I'm far from convinced he's one of the best in the world (are there any real good centre backs out there apart from vvd?) and might look even worse in our system.

You said you were far from convinces KK is better than Stones. Are you now retracting that?

Are you joking mate?

Koulibaly belongs to the very best central defenders in the world. Stones is not even the best CB in Manchester.

You hopefully saw when Laporte was brought in a couple of years ago that our defence improved remarkably. Hell even 19 yo Garcia was an upgrade to Stones, why else would Pep play him? I can take it even further: our backline looks even more solid with a 35 yo CDM (Fernandinho). That’s how far down Stones has end up in the pecking order.

Koulibaly will now partner Laporte who is clearly our best defender. If Koulibaly and Laporte stays fit, we’d have the best centreback partnership this club has seen in many many years.

I’d rather see THB given a chance ahead of Fern, who I think has dropped off significantly last season.

If Koulibaly had performed as well for us this season has he had for Napoli people here would be screaming donkey and get rid asap.
