Kalidou Koulibaly

Thought so. So you are making your comparison no doubt on those two poor games (take your word for it as didn't see them) against what games Stones played for us?
It's at least 5 of 7 games I've watched that he's had performances that would make people crucify him here (dont remember the Lpool games).

City games points dropped without scoring, when conceding 1 goal or less= 3 points loss in 38 games.

0-1 at Southampton.

Other losses without scoring:

O-2 Wolves
0-2 Spurs
0-2 Utd

So we would have needed 3 goals in each game, to win, or 2 for a point.

City points from 1-0 wins=
Sheff U & Leicester= 6 points.

Liverpool points from 1-0 wins= 15.

City points dropped when scoring 1 goal= 9

Liverpool 1-3 = 4 goals needed for win.
Utd 1-2 = 3 goals needed for a win.
Chelsea 1-2= 3 goals needed for a win (end of season).

City, points dropped when scoring 2 or more goals= 12

Spurs 2-2 = 3 goals needed for a win
Newcastle 2-2 = 3 goals needed for a win
Norwich 2-3 = 4 goals needed for a win
Wolves 2-3 = 4 goals needed for a win
Palace 2-2= 3 goals needed for a win

Liverpool points dropped scoring 2 goals =0.

FA Cup semi final= 3 goals needed for a win
Champions League q final= 4 goals needed for a win.

Can we get rid of this idea, that our defending isn't the main problem ?
Context is needed mate. Against Spurs 2-2 we missed tons of chances and they scored a long shot (Ederson mistake) and a corner. Apart from that they didn't create anything which shows we defended great in that game.
Newcastle scored a screamer to make it 2-2 and we didn't really condede any chances in that game either. Against Wolves we were 1 man down the whole game basically.

With that said obviously our defence is a problem atm and needs an upgrade long term, I'm not sure Koulibaly is the answer though.

Napoli under Gattuso or Ancelotti isnt even close to being similar to the football City is playing.

nothing like a high line defence where you are under immense scrutiny and pressure as a CB if things go wrong front of you higher up.

Maybe Sarri's Napoli is a better comparison but even that is based on a much slower Seria A.

Jorginho was being held as the best passer of planet because he did pass it with like 96% accuracy and was the best midfielder of Seria A the season Chelsea bought him front of us.

Here in PL in a different team in turned out he is a good pen taker but not better than Gundogan and needs someone who is doing dirty work with legs (Kante).

We only find out how good Koulibaly is when he pays in our team, here he wont play as deep as in Seria A and wont have as much support from midfielders. Also he will be in a team that has the ball 60-70% of the game,
so he might only face 2-3 tricky situations a game but any of those will likely be higher quality chances and a mistake almost always end up in a goal conceded.

If you watch highlights many of them show 6-7 Napoli people on their box and Koulibaly is making the block,, tackle etc.
Thats great but here at City thats not the issue, we dont have 6-7 City defenders/mf's defending attacks.
We have the likes of situation like Garcia vs Lyon and Cornet arriving making it 2 vs 1, or when we are losing ball half way line and Dembele sprinting onto it alone at Ederson.

Alternatively would Otamendi look much better in Napoli thats not so much attacking as us and defenders face much more manageable situations than our defenders?
Yes he would.

Koulibaly is a good defender who would face his biggest challenge if he arrives in a much quicker league at age 29. For the price he has he would have to give us 4 good season at least imo.
If he needs 1 full year to get used to the country, league, team, pace of the league, like many players do then its a bit tricky...

Still feels Napoli needs to sell him because no CL next year, they want to spend on their squad, already bought an expensive player in Osimhen. If we would say 50m pounds and no more we still would get him in the end but certainly we risk others coming in and giving 55m and take him.

Now is the time to cash in for Napoli, next summer nobody would even pay close to 60m even if he has a good season.

Hopefully this is a great move all round and we see the best of him in a blue shirt. I couldn't care less about the fee, it's not my money and won't be anywhere near as much as Maguire cost.

What I will say is that I understand people's reservations. When you make a new signing, ideally it is someone coming off the back of a great season and in the form of their lives. That clearly isn't the case with Koulibaly, it doesn't make him a bad defender but it does mean there are some, quite legitimate concerns as to whether he will reach the level he was at previously.

We're a better team than Napoli and his strengths should make us a more solid defensive unit. Last season sloppy mistakes cost us more than moments of genius from the opposition. If he helps cut that out it will be money well spent. I'm looking forward to seeing him play for us.

Would surprise me in the end since Napoli are not easy partners to negotiate with but he'd be an excellent signing

If we didn't sign someone because they "might not be too clever here" there really would be very few people we could sign.

But again he hasn't had the greatest of seasons and he sems tobe a player who looked great at one club (the same with all the players Napoli had sold ) but didn't kick on once they got their big move.

People who have been following Serie A closely would know that he just needs a fresh start to really get going again. Has done all he could for Napoli, is a great role model and would fit in nicely alongside Laporte.

We have an advantage in these negotiations in that it's clear they want Gabriel and are running out of time. We shouldn't be overpaying here.

How much have you watched him mate?

I've probably seen him play 15/20 games seen some rough 1s like against Barcelona the other week but I've seen some very good 1s especially against the likes of Salah & Mbappe. He's a good player and better than any of our others CBs bar Laporte but who knows he may even become better than him.

If we had more pace and width in attack (Sane/Torres hopefully) and more intensity and stamina in midfield to press quicker and higher (Bernardo/Foden instead of Silva/Gundogan), teams wouldn't attack us as frequently and the defensive problems wouldn't be as exposed.

No, but neither have Bernardo Silva, Ederson or Joao Cancelo if we're being honest. All of them will rightly be in the squad next season because you can't let one bad season ruin your view of a top player.

Bernardo Silva was part of the side that knocked us out and (corr), he won the league in that season. Ederson was a League Cup and Winner and Cancelo had a League Winners Medal before they joined us.
