Pep's contract situation | 2 year extension confirmed! (pg1817)

Half watching the CL final and thinking City would thrash either of these two. With the benefit of hindsight I think Barca‘s thrashing against Bayern swayed Guardiola to pick an ultra cautious line up.
Sent out a weakened side So he wouldn't have to play Bayern?
Could be a fatal blow to Peps football philosophy. The seeds of doubt have been well and truly sown now. Needs to win the fking thing to be reborn.

Bayern have pace and power everywhere. They were fighting, tackling, faulting, pressing even in 90th minute, never let PSG have the ball for more than 10 seconds...

Pace and power gives them chance to play high intensity game which creates enermous risk for opponents.

Pep failed there 3x in a row to get them to final. But at least semis were not a problem unlike here at City.

Imo given how PL is we could do with more pace and power in our team. especially midfield and wings. Mahrez is a nice player but if you put Coman or Gnabry next to him these guys are like wild dogs running all game, winning ball back, helping out fullbacks, getting into box, arriving for headers, creating, scoring etc.
Mahrez is way too comfortable to this type of wing play he would not survive in this Bayern team will be intrested to see how Sane will do who does not have the best workrate off the ball imo either but going forward he is ultra dangerous on form...

The amount of work done by likes of Goretzka-Thiago duo, constant running, faults, blocking passing lanes, workrate, distribute the ball quickly and accurately etc. again Gundogan is way too slow and comfortable compared to that...
(even Muller, did anyone see how much he was helping off the ball and how he was basically everywhere all game?)

Pep needs to change these things both in PL and especially in CL.

Spot on. We’ve had this element as well during Centurions and Fourmidables but this year we’ve lost it completely.

I can’t help but to think that losing Dinho in midfield has had devastating effects all over the pitch this season. Without doubt one of our most important players ever. When he was injured he was often replaced by Gundogan alone but this year Pep seems to want to fit in both Gundo and Rodri and that doesn’t work

Those criticising Pep need to view this year as a holding year.
After two very good seasons, you would expect something to give.

But i don't think that was it.
We have a recruiting plan that is well thought out in advance. This stops us making impulse buys that can wreck the squad balance and wage structure. Look at the rags to see what unplanned buys can do to you.

I honestly think Kompany's sudden departure derailed us. It wasn't just replacing his position that threw us, more by his leadership loss as well. Us not wanting to replace without careful thought first meant no action at all.
We gambled that Laporte would stay fit and it didn't work.

Pep has known all season we were unbalanced and has tried to compensate. He over compensated versus Lyon.
His system depends on having the right players. His first season here proved that.
Once he gets the right players that know the system, we click.

I honestly believe that once the back is sorted out this transfer window, we will see a different side.
It doesn't mean we will win the Champions league next time, but we should be much more balanced to make a proper challenge.

"No impulsive buys" So if Messi, Kane , Martinez or Felix become available, we don't make a move?

Not having that, if any of the above or other class players are available, we will be there like flies on poo.

If he only signs one year extra then we are in exactly same situation next year like now. Also it would mean he is not sure enough to commit for longer.

It's a one off game, a cup final, if we had played to our strengths we would have given them a test.

Would pep have played to our strengths though? For the record i hope pep stays for at least 5 more years, i just wish he would trust the players more!

We really need a 2nd central defender alongside Laporte. Last season we thought Stones might emerge but the doubts about him are now bigger than ever.

However, I think we should have done better in the FA Cup semi-final and the CL quarter-final. By then Garcia had emerged and Foden was looking very good. I think we could have won the FA Cup at least and beaten Lyon had we got our midfield right.

I may be cynical here, but, if he signs a one year extension, is it just to keep the press off his and the clubs back for this season?
And he will still leave next summer?

i think it at least gives the board 2 years to plan for a new boss. It would end the uncertainty because everyone would know his end date For sure. Pep can also oversee a bit of a rebuilding process For two years, hopefully leaving the first team in a good position for the new manager.

Criticisms from City fans are way OTT.

How many managers are better (for City) than Pep? Are they available? Who is guaranteed to win the CL?

In hindsight Pep made mistakes against Lyon. But different tactics wouldn't guarantee success either.

Take a look at our defence: Walker's good but is not consistent, has mistakes in him and offers little in attack cimpared to other top RBs. Cancelo is good as well but is not a natural LB. Garcia and Fernandinho are not at the required level for a CL winning side, Laporte is back from a very bad injury and it will take several months of regular games to regain form.

Why is Pep supposed to win the CL with such a defence? He tried to be clever and make us more stable in defence with 3 CBs but it backfired. We still could have won if referees saw the foul on Laporte for Lyon's 2nd.

So, we didn't have a good defence to win the CL and we had to do it with referees biased against us. Many fans are angry about Pep because they underestimated our problems in defence. Relentless pressing helped us against Real. Chances are we couldn't press so well against Bayern or PSG, as we had to play every 4 days.

Get behind Pep instead of helping media get on his back and mentally wear him down.

That's the million dollar question, he's does not seem to worry as much against the big sides.

The smaller and lesser teams seems to get into his head far too much.

By the end of the season though Laporte was back and Pep got it wrong in the two big games.

A quality central defender would sort it out but is Pep only able to manage when given more or less perfect players? Let's not forget that Bayern won with Alaba and Boateng in central defence with Thiago in front of them. A few months ago that would not have looked like a credible spine of your side.

Pep's got a potential credibility problem that may vanish in the opening weeks of the season. I hope that the Lyon defeat is going to become history fast but for the moment it hangs around poisoning the air. We could just not talk about but it would still be there.

It might be good for us. I want the players and coach to come back with appetite sharpened.

There were two cock-ups at the end of the season: FA Cup semi-final and Lyon.

Fernandinho was not credible as a central defender. It was quickly clear he couldn't play there. Stones was completely dropped. Garcia had emerged. Then there's the midfield shambles. We have good options in there. most squads would kill for Rodri, KDB, Bernardo and Foden but we used our three defensive midfield plodders who together are useless defensively and offensively. Really poor decisions when it mattered by Pep.

I just hope these were bad days in the office. Pep's CV is better than anyone elses.

Alaba and Boateng are miles better as a combo than a coming back from a terrible injury Laporte and Dinho/Garcia. And Bayern's FBs are better too. Kimmich's on a different level to Walker.

When it was first rumoured that pep was coming to city all the fans were excited and couldn’t wait to say we have the best manager in the world, look at us now saying get rid you guys need to look in the mirror and give yourself a fcking good bollocking, I don’t know about typical City but I do know typical City fans.
