I don’t know why we are concluding that Messi can’t press when he clearly has in the past. We’d probably play him as a CF anyway and it’s not like Sergio is this massive defend from the front man on fire. We’d have to accommodate him a bit but we’d be fine
Mainly because I’ve just watched Bayern put 8 past a Barcelona team with Messi wandering around waiting for the ball to be delivered to him. His work rate and commitment to the cause were negligible.

I’d just want him to see everyone else explode in the league, rags at work laughing saying you will never get him, can you just imagine, this is the man who will go down as the greatest footballer in our generation. Pele, Maradona, Messi and to have him play for us would be a coup. I don’t include Ronaldo as when he played at United he wasn’t the machine he is now. in this country we never get these players here, for him to come would propel us above and beyond anything we’ve yet seen, can you imagine uefa after CAS and now this, oh to be a fly on the wall if this comes off.

That's bollocks, some of us just see things differently, doesn't mean we're right or wrong, it's just an opinion.

We are at our very best when we're pressing with pace, intensity and aggression. When we do that everything else falls into place, we're defensively stronger, we create more chances, we're sharper and more clinical, no one can live with us. We are at our very worst when we have 2 or more players in the starting XI who cannot press with pace, intensity and aggression. When we do that everything falls apart, defensively the high line gets exposed, our attacks are slow and laboured, we resort to crosses from anywhere lumped into the box because teams can get all 11 men back behind the ball and we run out of ideas other than "give it to Kev".

The best teams around currently all have very similar high intensity pressing styles, we've fallen behind this season because we have lost that ability to "fight like a small team" out of possession.

I love Messi and he's the most talented player in world football, no one comes remotely close and I include Silva, De Bruyne and Aguero but he definitely falls into the category of players who cannot press with pace, intensity and aggression. Against the very best you can't carry a single player, even Messi, in my opinion. That all said, if it comes off, I cannot wait to see the little fucker score 40/50 a season, it'll certainly be enjoyable to watch.
If I could applaud this post I would. I suppose it all depends on his hunger to prove himself in a new league and what a medical would suggest he still has left in his kegs
I would hope we are long past being the sort of club that is a lucrative retirement home for past-it strollers. We’re not united

You’re not seriously going to judge him based mainly on that match are you? And even if you did, for the first quarter, before the eventual outcome became plainly obvious, he was decent. Once things changed in the game, and especially if he already had deeper issues at the club anyway, if think to base your view on whether we should buy him based on the latter part of that game is a tad short-sighted. Not very, er, holistic, as Jim would say.

Why can't people see that his game isn't about running up and down the flanks or going box to box.

His game is all about playing at quick bursts, for 50% of a match he's either stood still or walking, he isn't on his toes all match or closing the back line down. The way he plays he could carry on til he's 40.

He stays between the lines of midfield and attack all the time, he always finds space and is devastating in the 18 yard box. If we get him only for a year he will absolutely boss this league.

Weve seen many a player who's been exceptional in other countries come here and struggle.
Messi would last about 2 years and with the pace of this league, at his age I think would potentially struggle.

You’re not really thinking holistically Jim, about what this signing would bring to the club.

the Messi rumour is starting to gain some traction in the mainstream media - may mean very little but the story/possibility is starting to spread

He was pretty ineffective at Anfield as well. I prefer younger, hungrier players who are ambitious, want to improve, and make their reputation at City. If he signs I’ll get over it ;)
