You absolutely need a history lesson if you can’t see the parallels between early 1930’s Germany (you know, before the Holocaust) and 2016-present America.

I don't know that the parallels are that strong . . . but they're stronger than they've ever been since then. Sure, we interred Japanese people in the 40s, stomped all over the inalienable rights of non-white, non-male, non-straight citizenry for decades after, survived a criminal President in the 1970s . . . but at least we've made progress since.

However, two things: the economy is the worst its been since the 30s by several measurements, and to my knowledge no previous President has suggesting gassing immigrants the way Trump did (along with spikes to pierce flesh and an alligator moat at the wall).

- Assault on the integrity of the media (Lugenpresse / Fake News)
- Demonising minorities
- Removal of dissent within administration
- Rallies
- Nullifying power of other institutions (Judiciary / parliament)
- Cult of personality
- Overblown nationalism

Need I go on?
I’m not saying it’s heading towards Germany in the late 30s and 40s. Maybe US democracy and opposition is stronger. But there’s no doubt he’s on the same path at the moment. I’d say we’re up to about 1936, so far thankfully without the execution of key opponents.

I think you do need a history lesson if you can’t see the parallels with 1930s Germany.

BBC4 recently re-aired their 3 part documentary The Rise Of The Nazis. I watched it when it was originally aired last year. For some months now I have been uncomfortable with what I’ve witnessed happening in the US and how it mirrors how Hitler seized power in 1930s Germany and more worryingly, how easily he dismantled democracy and created a fascist state.

It’s not the direct comparison with the extremes of Nazi Germany, more the political manoeuvres that allowed him to gain power and how most people were completely blind to what was happening until it was too late.

It's just weird how they are given such an elevated position.
