The lawyers got fired because advising Messi is and was a massive conflict of interest. There's a reason why conflict checks exist.

Massive law firms like the one Barcelona were using have 1,000+ lawyers in 25 countries.

It will be very common for them to have representation on both sides of an issue and it's not a conflict of interest unless the lawyers involved are personally discussing details.

More likely Bartomeu binned them for a) PR reasons or b) Because they wrote up a contract that is going to let Messi walk away for free and they told him he didn't have a leg to stand on.

Mullock;

With City's lawyers now examining the clause in Messi's contract that gives them hope they can sign the Argentine for free, beleaguered Barca bosses hope that the Blues will agree to a players-plus-cash deal rather than take a £630million gamble in court.

Sunday Mirror Sport understands that both clubs believe Messi is bound for the Etihad.

And that the only detail that remains is whether Messi signs for City with Barcelona's blessing - or the terms of the most controversial transfer in football history are decided by either FIFA or the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Simon seemingly is operating on old information if he's bringing the release clause into it.

He always tweets hours after everyone else,chancer

That's because he's a Spanish pundit for English audiences.

His role is basically to collect information and translate it so English speaking people know whats going on in Barcelona. It's a role that's basically being made obsolete by the accounts like BarcaNews and Hagrid, who can translate things and put them out there much quicker.

If Messi's 700m buyout no longer exists because he's in his final year that would also mean that his ability to leave on a free (before his final year) is no longer applicable, no?
He can leave for free at the end of the last season,the row is when that officially was with the extension

Sports law generally isn't a big practice, even at huge firms. It's true that a contract is a contract, but realistically anything football related is probably just going to a handful of partners, and clients of Barcelona of Messi's stature will just get the head of the group. It's very unlikely in my view that there would be a completely different set of people working on Messi's contract matter than those who represented Barcelona in contract matters previously. I'm not a lawyer but I've worked with firms before in the past which, then in a later deal, sought to represent the party on the other side of me and in each case they had to come to us prior and request a conflict waiver before doing so (which sometimes were granted, sometimes were not). Skipping that step is definitely grounds for dismissal, putting everything else aside.

Edit: you can actually just look it up. The firm has 9 partners listed who list "sports" as a practice area in the Barcelona office. There's no way that's not a conflict.
