I see Messi as taking on Silva's role with a little less fight and a lot more bite. But what a shame that they couldn't have played together for just a season. Silva and Messi on the same wavelength would have been something to see despite any age related decline.
I'm not sure my puny brain could have dealt with that

Scored 51 18/19. then 31 19/20 - his worst return for 12 years and he isn't getting any younger. Past records mean nothing it is the future and he is well in decline.

A 20 goal decline in a season suggests he is past his best at 33. He is currently a rat leaving a sinking ship and I would kick him as far away as I could, rather than pay his stupid wages which will rip the team apart causing long term damage.
Haha hahahaha.

Just saw a comment under this article that compared Ozil to Messi.
By the way Messi scores more goals every calendar year than Ozil has in his entire career.
Let's forget facts though.

Paywall, cant read

Just salivating at the thought of the domino effect this’ll cause for future transfers (& perhaps even current negotiations for Koulibaly). Pep was already a massive lure for many of our top-tier signings already, but then you add 2-3 years of Messi on top of that? Lord have mercy.

Should hopefully be pretty easy to temp our next Agüero replacement, because who wouldn’t want to be the striker for the club that’ll have Messi & KDB feeding them all day. Ideally it’ll be Mbappe & hope another CL-less season will him have looking for greener pastures. Though worth noting he does have the Euros next year which might make his value go up considering his & France’s form, & his contract also runs out in 2022.

Also we might be the next Inter in terms of drawing from Argentina. Already had Pablo, Otamendi (when he wasn’t useless), Agüero & now Messi. Might gain some massive popularity in Argentina for a good while & gain some interest from the next-generation of Argentine wonder-kids. Agüero & Messi scoring goals for fun on local TV? Sounds pretty fucking great.

Aside from that, we have 3 weeks until our season begins & I really hope this doesn’t drag for another 2 weeks since it’ll also hamper our Koulibaly talks. Ideally we get Koulibaly next week & get him ready to integrate into Pep’s system for a good while before the season starts.

Same obviously goes for Messi. Of course Messi & Pep have a great working relationship, but Pep has also adjusted his methods a lot since his Barca days, so Messi isn’t just going to slot into whatever position like it’s the good-old days. Plus, our opening group of fixtures will be tough as hell. Wolves (a), Lei (H), Leeds (a), Arsenal (H). Messi will quite literally be thrown to the wolves in his first couple of games, vs teams that have caused us all sort of problems last season. Thankfully no crowds though, so maybe the pressure will be greatly reduced.

Regardless, it’ll be a wholly new system for Messi & we need to give him as much time to get acquainted in the city with his family, with Pep’s system, the players, the club staff, etc. He’ll need as much of the pre-season for that to take effect & have him be comfortable as possible in his role on the field (& the players with him as well). If this ends up being a long, bitter legal battle with Barca, he’ll likely have very little time to settle in all those ways I mentioned. So while I have no doubt he’ll break all sorts of records this season, there’ll be a lot of pressure in those first couple of games to be the same-old Messi & those first four fixtures might very well shape our season imo.

This would really boil some piss . . .

EgnpTRFXcAEQgpY

It inspired this quote from pisscan.....

"It's City, isn't it? They are a small club, with a small mentality. All they can talk about is Manchester United, that's all they've done and they can't get away from it."

Never in your lifetime eh knob head.

Surely, with no release clause, the club can ask for whatever they value him at, same as we do in the P L? assuming he is under contract without the termination clause we hopefully think he has

Amdist all of this, Koeman is a weird appointment, right? Is anyone thinking he is the solution to Barca's problems right now?

Koeman is an excellent manager. And a Barcelona legend. Right guy for the job, 100%. Just unfortunately at the wrong time. Horrible timing!

Sorry but imo he is the scapegoat

The manager who let Messi slip from his fingers

Yes the President is a dick and causes this shit but Koeman should be fighting to keep him which by all accounts he his not

Seems to me to be down to the wording on his contract. Messi can leave at the end of each season, if he informs the club in writing before the end of that season, is the accepted situation. Barcelona believe that date to be 10th June, Messi believes it was in August due to the delayed champions league final. He informed them two days before the final.

Without knowing the wording in the contract then impossible to say. If it says before last game in competition Barcelona are involved in, then he can go for free. If it says last Barcelona game, or 10th June specifically, then he can't, or at least has to negotiate it.

Regardless Barcelona have an unhappy player on their hands to deal with. Furthermore, this is their best ever player, a true legend. Damaging his legacy via a sour exit benefits nobody on their end.

I doubt very much Koeman either has any say in it or any influence on Messi - there's mutual respect but that's it

Under the tenure of Bartomeu, coaches have been caretakers - they do his bidding

Of all those involved the Dutchman is going to come out unscathed comparatively - he'll simply be leading Barca in the post-Messi era which he is less likely to come out unscathed

In all this excitement, i totally forget there was any more to football and the charity shield was today.

Arteta has now won more domestic trophies in less than one year, than klopp has in 5, 6?

Sure, perverse argument, those are only allowed when arguing For klopp's greatness.

How safe is the assumption that Messi does not have a release clause in his contract now? The reports on twitter state that the 'release clause expired'. Do contracts of employment work like that? If I have a contract of employment, other than changes due to new employment laws, I would expect it to pretty much invariant. Are these reports correct? It seems strange to me.

I would think release clauses are unusual in standard contracts of employment, but once inserted why would they lapse? Anyone got any thoughts?
