With the wages he is on we wont be getting any fee. A loan or a transfer where we pay him off is more likely but then whats the point of that. He might as well stay as back up which is where this is heading.
 
We have had more than our value from Nico and I don't think we are going to be going back and forth for weeks to get a fee.

Mendes might be able to work his magic and get some sort of fee but realistically I think Txiki will be happy to get his wages off the books.

We paid circa 28m for him I think and we have definitely had our value from that transfer.

Don't think he benefited from being next to Kompany much at all, his best period was always alongside Stones where he really lead the defence.

He's a good defender with one glaring weakness - pace - but he's always given 100%, always played through all sort of small injuries when we needed him. He's one of the few players in recent times who I think leaves the club without any mixed feeling over if he could have been better or if he gave everything he could to the club.

I assume Porto play a deeper line of defence as they have 37 year old Pepe, and I think he'll do really well there.

He got in the league team of the year and was in everyone’s fantasy team that year scored about 6 Goals as well
Sometimes a little rash but fearless will put his head in anywhere

Don't doubt his commitment at all. He's an ok defender who aligned with a bit of a lack of pace dived in too much and was square on a lot of the time. Be interesting if we have a poor season defensively this season how many will be pining for Otamendi back. He goes with my best wishes but Ake is a better option in this team
 
Do we need to be smarter about this sale? If we sort his departure before getting another centre back sorted, does it make our negotiation position even worse? Anyone we buy from could dig their heals in knowing we need to fill the hole. I mean, they are anyway but could make things worse

If you saw couple of pages ago, I praised him for his service and talked about how we will help him go, I was just replying to someone who talked about keeping him round, which we simply cannot do.

I think that there is a balance between the above. I assume he has been told that his game time will be limited and that he is free to find a new club but also free to stay if whe wants and fight for his place.

He was told that last year as well. Its standard stuff as players get to the back end of their contracts in their 30's and the wages they were offered in their late 20's are looking way over market value. How much does he want to play / how much cash drop would he take / how much would we pay him off (assuming we are desperate for the squad spot). Its all in the mix but I think he ends up staying
