Any truth in the Tagliafico mutterings ?

Are we looking to get one last signing done?

I’d also like to know. If we see movement regarding Zinchenko, then we can be pretty confident something is up. I just hope Zinch take his chances elsewhere this time and not stay and fight for his place (again). By the looks of it, paying more than half of Otamendi’s salary at Benfica the first two years, while also giving him 2m euros (rumour?), they really wanted him gone. I can see a similar approach regarding Zinchenko. I think the club will be ruthless in fixing all positions at this point.

I'm actually starting to get really excited about the Dias transfer. He sounds like exactly what we need. I think having a solid CB pairing will fix a massive amount of our issues.

I believe so too. I can see a very stable partnership ahead, like Laporte-Kompany in 18/19. But the best part is we got ourselves a third top centreback in Aké, and I honestly think we can put him in a similar bracket as Laporte and Dias. Our choices for centreback position haven’t looked this promising in many years.

Sterling has to play on the right or we're not going to get anywhere. Another faux pas.

We’re clearly lacking width and players who can beat people to create space. He rarely takes on a fullback from the and our play is very narrow. Don’t worry though he’ll score 2 or 3 the next time we play some shite that we batter and people can point to his goal stats from the left again. Bit like the team now a flat track bully. Watch Mane or Salah and they’re levels above him.

I agree to some degree but bear in mind that the team is still 3 weeks off full fitness, with 4 problem positions and a pile of injuries on top...... no wonder we struggled against a decent side like Leicester who looked fitter and more organized.
Agree, but circumstances should have dictated a plan b. Not advocating pep out by the way, but he needs to be pragmatic in times of need

we used to have 3 walls to block a counter, the front line with the initial press, then Fern sweeping in on the first ball out to either foul or win it back, and then the back 4 if it got that far, but there was often enough disruption in the first 2 phases that it was rare we got badly exploited.

Now we have 1, the back 4, we have no midfield in the defensive transition so in effect we have 30/40 yards of blank space for the opposition to create a counter in and therefore they get much clearer opportunities and the defence now gets caught between ideas of how to stop it hence we get a plethora of individual errors as they aren't singing from the same sheet and are put under too much critical pressure, instead of being there (like say at Liverpool) to just clean up and been the final wall to an already disrupted counter.

That's why Liverpool have crushed the league and done us over, because the midfield is just there to crush any counter and win the ball back, so the backline rarely comes under critical pressure. What Pep has failed to acknowledge in purchasing Rodri was the unique factor that allowed his style to work in 17/18 and 18/19 was the energy of Fern allied with his technical skill, to allow us to play Pep's way in attack but have the legs to have a 2nd wall to counter attacks. Gundogan was a drop-off but given the sweeper role with a really intense, Bernardo inspired first press, his job was more to pick up the loose counter and recycle than break it up. Last season both he and Rodri were tasked with breaking it up a lot more and it failed miserably.

It's why Gundogan, Rodri and the likes of Mahrez might be good players but they don't suit what Pep needs in England. The unfortunate thing is it's been completely missed and we've unravelled what works and created something that is deeply problematic for a Pep style of play.

Equally, we had a plethora of simple chances in tight games last season that we squandered, largely Jesus and Sterling, that puts us on the back foot. The low block isn't the killer because we still get really good chances in pretty much every game, it's not taking them when they arise and instead having to wait for 6/8 attempts before our front men score. Liverpool tend to take their early chances, as we did in 17/18 and 18/19 and it sets the tone for entire games.

We can't do a 3 phase press with this current squad so Pep has to either philosophy or make a couple of signings to address it in the next few days.
Brilliant summary, thank you for your effort.

Let’s be honest. We are passed the panic buy stage now. There’s a week left in the windows and we’ve got ONE left back in the squad.. not to mention his name is Benjamin Mendy. Any left back we buy will be an upgrade

Is Tagliafico better than Angelino? Can anyone honestly say that? Angelino was deemed surplus and yet we're going for someone older and arguably about the same standard.

With respect to the Mendy conversation, I think that it's very easy to sit on the outside and say "well I don't rate him and I think he's shit so we need a replacement surely". But to the people who work with Mendy everyday they still want to give him a chance. So it's not as black and white as you're making out. The 'issue' if you can call it that, is that currently there's no one to rotate Mendy with and when he's not fit we don't have a natural left back who can step in. We could do with that as an option, but I'm fairly convinced that we'll see Ake there whenever Mendy isn't fit.

I see people keep listing positions we should be buying in, but nobody is taking into account how squad numbers, and that the players who people want to discard are proven internationals on massive wages. It doesn't work like that. Clubs rarely just keep adding players without any regard for what they already have. City made it crystal clear at the start of the window there would be no midfielders brought in. They have KDB, Rodri, Ferna, Foden, Bernardo, Gundo. Six players for three positions and they're happy with those options regardless of how sexy that lad at Lyon looks right now.

Good post. I think we often forget on here the importance of man management within any football club- you have to treat people properly and fairly and give them every chance before moving them on. If Mendy is busting his balls trying to get fit you can see why we are reticent to bring in another LB.

Seems to be some very strange politics at City. We were ‘gung ho‘ after the legal victory and seemed to have a number of targets... we then got giddy re Messi and shut up shop. Our pursuit of a CB has been erratic if all the reported targets are genuine and I can’t fathom why we are chasing a last minute left back when the need has been glaringly obvious for some time. I wonder whether Pep has indicated he wants out and if we are holding back for a different coach later in the season. City are usually very strategic and methodical in our transfer business but we have been anything but this summer... something has changed and doesn’t feel quite right. Since I read Pep didn’t even go in the dressing room after the Lyon defeat I’ve had it in my head that he’s not here for long. I might be wrong but things certainly feel different at City right now.
Our recruitment on the whole is a sham, has been for a good few years now. Why can we never pick up a bargain like most other clubs seem to be able to manage
seems the rags are going for Jovic on loan.
We should be all over that one, but it's Madrid so another club who wouldn't deal with us if we were the last two teams on earth.

True , but we might have one until Christmas as I can't see Sergio being properly fit until December at the earliest . Not to worry though, we have Raheem to play that false nine role where he looks a natural.

If Aguero isn't back until Christmas he might as well retire, no one takes 7 months to recover from a 2 month injury unless they've not got a knee left.

All reports suggest he'll be coming back after the Leeds game, so stop panicking.

Fortunately, me and you don’t get paid to make those decisions - the club do. Let’s judge whether he’s better than Angelino when he signs and plays a game for us. That’s the only way we will find out

For me, Tagliafico, Telles or Grimaldo is the missing piece standing between us and regaining the title, maybe finally challenging for the Champions League for real.

Walker/Cancelo at RB.
Dias/Laporte/Aké/Stones at CB.
Tagliafico/Aké/Cancelo at LB.

Everyone knows we have a better attack than Liverpool, outscoring them with good margin season after season. I expect that to continue this season.
Finally plugging CB-position with two top signings, a stable leftback would make us unstoppable.

People seem worried about our midfield but I don’t find that to be a huge problem. Foden, Bernardo and KDB can press like maniacs, Fernandinho still got legs and energy and I hope Rodri improves even more.

Despite a rocksolid transferwindow so far, I’d be extremely disappointed going into another season with a busted leftback in Mendy. I can’t defend him anymore, I’ve done it since the end of the 17/18 campaign.

That fella looks about 12, so if that’s who you think is a source then good luck with that.

Check out his profile he's had an interview with Tommy Doyle and is a journalist in training.

It's the thing that makes me most sad about this team. I play LB in 11s so always look out for players in that position.

I was so excited when we signed Mendy after witnessing his crossing range for Monaco. His early numbers were outrageous, 6 assists in 6 games. He was better than Robertson or TAA.

He's done amazingly to come back from those two awful injuries and to remain positive and fit.

But it's taken it's toll, he's not what he was.
