England squad

don't disagree, but they were pre social media days.
we could have a Bobby Robson and Terry Venables now and it would be the same level of moaning we have now under southgate
They brought a brand of football that excited, they weren't afraid of being a bit maverick or upsetting their bosses, they inspired their players and they inspired the audience - special times that social media had nothing to do with.

We need that inspiration now,but i doubt the corrupt coffin dodgers at HQ would ever sanction such an appointment.

look what you dragged me into @crazyg ffs
Just come back into this thread.
You're very welcome. Ollie (another fine mess?). I was composing a reply last night, giving my two penn'orth, and when I came to check the new posts, found that all I had typed had been included in the new replies.

You have to remember that the 2018 World Cup came just after the season where most people on here had been privileged to watch OUR team become the first First Division/Premier League team to achieve 100 points in the season, playing arguably the best football ever seen. The First Centurions.
To then watch a tournament which had been specially formulated so that the "right" teams got through to the knockout stages was, to me at least, embarrassing to watch. The draw was such that the 4 semi-finalists could have been predicted, and the only "decent" teams England played, namely, Belgium and Croatia, we lost to.
England are very much a team who rely on strength, pace and a little skill, together with teamwork.
Unfortunately, the top teams also have that in abundance, and appear to be, individually, more skilfull. In addition, those teams tend to have a Plan B, or even a Plan C when things go wrong: England don't. When the chips are down, the tactics revert to hoof the ball to the big man, and hope for the best. After all, it's worked for the last 50+ years.

Don't get me wrong. England (we?) are a moderately good international side - only not as good as they/we think they are.

well he dropped Rooney from International football when people on here were saying he wouldn't

our semi final game v Croatia he had more City players than United starting, with Sterling playing and Rashford on the bench

and how many Man U players did he pick v Denmark in our last international match.... ? Answer = Zero
No rags but still two red shirts.

They had their ample arses bitten with BFS. I fancy it will be a long time before we get a man who will inspire the fans and players. Venables and Robson understood that you had to let players show what they could do. You need a couple of football artists, players who cannot be totally read by the opposition and you need to let them express what they can do. Southgate bothers too much about his job, I think, to give any player a bit of free rein.

My worry is that he wouldn't recognise a footballer if they bit him on his arse.

Would anyone genuinely pay money to watch England? But for the piss up and the trip, I can honestly say it doesn't interest me one iota. Since I've been alive everyone I know has never been passionate about England as a football team, when we went out to Croatia I wasn't that arsed. I was in bits when we got dumped out by Lyon, it's a strange one. We've been trying to play attractive-ish football since Southgate took over, but it's an absolute borefest 9/10. I just can't get up for England games, I'm patriotic, served my country but when it comes to football as a country it can fuck off. Not even sure how they can fix it, but I know Southgate definitely isn't the man to make things good.

Don't even get me started on the farce that is Foden/Greenwood/Maguire, it's ridiculous. The first time I've ever agreed with something Scholes has said.

I genuinely hope the good times come for us as an international side, but honestly I very much doubt they will in my lifetime!

Well that's messed up the squad selection (no, I'm not expecting him to be consistent either):-
  • Furious Gareth Southgate will tell his England players to stop embarrassing themselves after Ben Chilwell, Tammy Abraham and Jadon Sancho were filmed attending a packed birthday party ahead of the squad meet-up.

Southgate losing all the good will he'd built up. Complete double standards if he doesn't send Abraham, Sancho and Chilwell home.
