Leeds United (A) Post Match Thread

Walker seems to be excelling at switching-off. Does offer plenty going forward, but his defensive mis-haps are extremely poor for a player at his level.
Torres needs more time and may well be one for the future but alongside Mahrez, equals very little down the right.
We looked much better with Barnardo and Ferno on. Actually started to take control.
Worrying that our problems are not easily fixed!! Wrong mix of players to my mind. :-/

The problem with saying we just need our strikers back is that Peps system has always been built for the wingers. He always plays a single striker so they’re always marked by two defenders and asked to work for the team to open space for the wingers to score and create. I’d be Ok talking about strikers if we had torn them open in wide areas and messed up the final ball but our wing play has been shut down and is stagnant. Our strikers might bail us out more but I think things would have been fairly similar today as I don’t know that much really fell to the striker

I swear fellas on here get negative for all the wrong reasons..Let's just not scapegoat one or two players and look at it objectively. We were good for the 1st 20-30 minutes, scored a goal, didn't keep the tempo for the rest of the game, then came back into it a bit after the 80th minute. Within that period, Mendy looked good up until he received the Yellow card, post which he slumped off in an awful manner. Rodri did EXTREMELY well under the press and had a solid game defensively. Is he Fernandinho? NO, but he is a very capable DM and is only 24 years old. He is going to get better as he enters his prime. Also, he is not fucking responsible to clean up the mistakes that our fullbacks make defensively due to their suspect positioning. Dias was shouting for Walker the whole game because he realized that his positioning was off on so many occasions. A lot has to be said about Pep's tactics, as well as our players mentality, again it looked like they were looking for leaders and inspiration for majority of the game. It's like a lot of things have aligned in such a manner that we are not able to shake things up, whether it's the tactics, our player's ability to stay concentrated and/or the drive to win and compete within the squad. I believe its something that a LB or an OP Ball winning midfielder would NOT fix. I just hope that a lot of it gets rectified post International break but I won't put any money on it.

Can't be arsed reading most of thread after first couple of pages.

Watched the game with 5 Leeds fans and its to a man Al said given new rules handball was a pen and Sterling one was a pen.

Should have been out of sight by 20.mins, weren't and Leeds got back into it, but ut thought we created lots just didn't have that killer instinct..

Early days but thought Dias done well and can form a good partnership with Laporte.

Bielsa said yesterday that Pep Guardiola ruined football, because he's so good and he had so much success that teams resorted to horrendous football in order to counter people adopting Pep's tacitcs.

I'm not sure if that's 100% true or just Bielsa going over the top in complimenting his friend, but I'm really starting to think Pep has ruined the Manchester City fan base.

I know that the Match thread and twitter are not necessarily 100% accurate portrayals of the fanbase but I seriously don't think many people on here actually enjoy football anymore. The levels of anger and angst that starts when the team sheet is announced and doesn't disappear unless we are 4-0 up is just unbearable.

Both our strikers are injured! Someone's going to have to play out of position. I've not been Mahrez's biggest fan over the 3 years he's been here but fucking hell guys he's not shit, he doesn't need to "Go back to North Africa" FFS because he didn't hold the ball up. He put a massive shift in, was the first one legging it back to defend just before he came off. The players pressed like lunatics in the first 30 minutes and maybe we're not fit enough to do that for the whole game yet because we had no preseason, but it showed the players are committed to Pep's football 100%.

We had it exceptionally easy for a couple of seasons, 198 points has never been done before, and won't be done again, but even in that centurions season we dropped points in 1/6 games. We had long spells where we weren't winning games. I don't remember there being so much animosity towards the players and Pep, I don't remember this sense of entitlement to an easy win and anything else is a travesty requiring players lined up against the wall or Pep getting replaced.

Leeds were really good. We saw that when the (apparently on a compeltely different plane to us) Liverpool side conceded 3 and could have conceded many more. BIelsa is an exceptional coach, Leeds will finish in the top 10 and take a few more scalps. They will take away all structure from the game and make it end to end madness against a lot of teams.

Unfortunately, in an absolute downpour, Ederson, who was excellent mostly, made 3 or 4 great saves and was the 2nd best keeper in the league at claiming crosses and corners last season made a mistake. They scored, we dropped a couple of points, it happens. Sterling should have ended the game, that's annoying but he is what he is, he helps us out a lot more than he hurts us.

Pep isn't upset post match, he's laughing and smiling. He wants the title more than anyone posting on here, he works harder for Manchester City than anyone, and he knows with 6 players out, against a really good side, no preseason, in an insane condensed season, sometimes you're going to drop a couple of points.

I'm not sure how to make this a more succinct point, but I just think quite a lot of our fans just need to fucking relax and stop living with this mindset where we have to win every single game we play while looking world class from 1-11 and having put the game to bed inside half an hour.

I'm sure the usual brigade will turn up and tell me to fuck off for being a happy clapper, but christ, in 2020, with a pandemic keeping us cooped up, if you're frothing at the mouth with anger from the line up being released on twitter to the full time whistle then I'm not sure what the point is.
couldn't agree more.Pep is best man out there to get us more titles with this set of players.
Teams develop in cycles.Core group of players(8-14) have a lifecycle of 6-8 years of prime performance and around them you build a team with squad players with half lifecycle of 3-4 years.Pep reached his peak with his team in dec2017-2018, we were the best team in europe. We need a small squad rebuild.
Next 2 transfer windows are going to very important.

--Whole right side in the wing with mahrez and walker are not first choice quality(30 years and not going get better and mahrez is NHG)
No matter how much coaching and playing time and attacking space is give to raheem, he clearly is not a striker.Needs to play in the right wing where he can use his dribbling more and be more direct----

Post of the year.

You'll get pelters though.

Fuck VAR ... that was clear penalty for us ... and red card for them on Bernardo towards the end ...
Didn’t think it was tbh . If you watch it again he hardly touched sterling and you could say Dallas should have had a penalty in the first half if he went down . I thought it was an even game. I do think Dias and ake look good but mendy should be shipped off ASAP .

What can coaching staff do about injuries and the amount of time the players have to prepare themselves? Other teams finished their season earlier and had an earlier start to the season(more time get up to speed) and they haven't had 7 players missing. It's a bit of mess at City right now and no fault of the coaching staff IMO, just plain bad luck. We need to find out what energy drinks Liverpools backroom staff are feeding their players...

clearly said illness and injuries can’t be helped....

but match fitness is 100% within the remit of the coaching staff imo.
We finished later and started later than others and should have been on it from game 1.

pool energy drinks? no idea what you’re on about.

Well you’re overlooking Edersons howler for their goal, but your right about Rodri being god, not many people have much belief in him
I wasn’t overlooking Ederson’s howler, that’s why I said it was a shame he made the error that cost us 2 points.

I really can't be arsed with this season if Liverpool are going to be allowed to walk it again, I'll just watch City games and ignore the rest of the league if they are out of sight by December. What voodoo shit have they pulled at that club? Klopp's barely had any problems to fix for about 3 seasons now. Not to mention VAR always works in their favour.

What voodoo shit? They were the best team in the league last season by far

Earlier poster mentioned where were our passing triangles in midfield.? We were a bit like headless chickens. Am prepared to be shot down here but Gundogan controls and dictates the tempo of our game in midfield. If I am shot down then I am in good company with Pep and Joachim Low.

Let’s see how are when we get to full strength. At that point I think we can judge how the season might pan out. Too early at this stage to know what will happen. Bielsa managed that game so well, his substitutions were tactically all made at the right time. I think tactically we were poor. As soon as Ake replaced Mendy and Bernie came on we looked at a much more balanced side. The question is why not start with that side or make the changes much earlier.
