Leeds United (A) Post Match Thread

We are but the reaction of some fans is getting pathetic. Reminds me of those Spanish knobs at Barca and Madrid who start waving white handkerchiefs when things start to get a bit difficult. Twats.
If we actually play well and play with full effort and determination across the front line and i come away from the game enthused at our display, I half don’t care if we don’t win. Because I know we’ll come good if they leave me enthused with the performance.

But they aren’t enthusing me at the moment or much at all over the last year.

We fannied around that pitch for a good hour today in the middle of that game!

No communication at all from our forwards (I watch with no crowd noise and none of them speak to each other), no desire to press and win the ball up high, some of our passing was (and is in general over the last 12 months) fucking terrible up top, Sterling Foden and Mahrez have all turned into head-down blind-alley runners with hardly any good team play from any of them...

Then Bernardo came on and made them all look like idiots. He showed more desire, communication, passing quality, dribbling with intelligence and determination and actually worked hard to win the ball back than all of them put together. Yes he ballooned a ball over the bar late on, but he left me enthused with his display so I’ll forgive him the poor effort.

If he can do that, it just highlights how poor all the others were at doing sod all of it for such a huge chunk of the game.

I don’t care if Ederson makes a mistake or Mendy makes a few. I’m far more concerned and pissed off with the general trend of quality, work rate and togetherness of our forwards.

It’s not like we’re scraping the barrel with the 24th and 25th squad men who’ve never played first team football before. These lads have been part of multiple trophy winning sides. And even if they were bottom end of the squad players, I’d still be pissed off at the lack of fight to win the ball back when they give the ball away like they do often do.

I really can't be arsed with this season if Liverpool are going to be allowed to walk it again, I'll just watch City games and ignore the rest of the league if they are out of sight by December. What voodoo shit have they pulled at that club? Klopp's barely had any problems to fix for about 3 seasons now. Not to mention VAR always works in their favour.
We need to get our own house in order first, Enough of refs, making excuses, var, liverpool ect
We've been fucking garbage for well over a year, Liverpool have been head and shoulders above anything in the league so far with or without VAR.
Time to start the realisation of us not been good enough.

You're upset because we've not changed unrecognisably from last season?

No shit! Bernardo just got back from an injury, Laporte came back from Covid a week ago. Dias started his first game today, Torres his first start today. Gundogan, Aguero, Jesus, Cancelo are all still out. We're catching up for having 6 weeks less preseason than other sides, we're trying to get the squad whole again.

Why did you think we were going to massively different straight away with all that's gone on?

I mean I'm sorry but what fucking world are you living in where we'd have a total reset from last season when we had a 3 week break and started with 8 players out and 4 new signings needing to be introduced?

You thought we'd just waltz through the opening month of the season with no strikers, with 2 new defenders settling in, with at least 3 or 4 starting players out?

The obvious issues are still there. The 3 new signings bedding in isn’t the issue. They haven’t caused us any problems as such.

Having 2 strikers one of which is 32 with injury problems is an issue, the balance of the midfield is an issue, the loss of Silva with no obvious replacement is an issue, having one natural but out of form left back is an issue, the way our team panics after conceding is an issue, the amount of quality chances we concede is an issue.

I understand that we had a short break, I know we have injury and Covid issues but we are still showing the same fragility. We’ve become flat track bullies, great when we’re two goals up but likely to collapse when things go wrong.

Right, even Kevin made some poor choices up front every now and then.

Other than sterling at the end who ran at the keeper, the stats show alot of shots, but we didn't create that many CLEAR chances that we normally do, the ones that just get tapped in.

The ones we did, we had shots off that got blocked, unlucky but happens.
We played a team today, who were prefect for a City team to beat & almost lost.

That should be our concern imo.

If Liverpool have a season like the last one, ee are almost out of it already.

But if they don't, we are currently pissing the title away, without them even having to.

Agreed, even the pitch being slippy was good for us. We're not the rags, we have no divine right to win every game, but I'd prefer if we were to lose out on the title again to do it fighting every step of the way.

We might look at today as a good point, who knows, Leeds are no mugs they'll take points at home off most teams

We are getting nowhere near the League this year I’m afraid. Two shots on target from 23 attempts says it all. We’re missing that ruthlessness that we had a couple of years ago and we’ll have more days like today and last week. I suspect that we may finish below Utd this year, although still top 4.
Could be that we are also missing our two actual striker to injury....

Bielsa said yesterday that Pep Guardiola ruined football, because he's so good and he had so much success that teams resorted to horrendous football in order to counter people adopting Pep's tacitcs.

I'm not sure if that's 100% true or just Bielsa going over the top in complimenting his friend, but I'm really starting to think Pep has ruined the Manchester City fan base.

I know that the Match thread and twitter are not necessarily 100% accurate portrayals of the fanbase but I seriously don't think many people on here actually enjoy football anymore. The levels of anger and angst that starts when the team sheet is announced and doesn't disappear unless we are 4-0 up is just unbearable.

Both our strikers are injured! Someone's going to have to play out of position. I've not been Mahrez's biggest fan over the 3 years he's been here but fucking hell guys he's not shit, he doesn't need to "Go back to North Africa" FFS because he didn't hold the ball up. He put a massive shift in, was the first one legging it back to defend just before he came off. The players pressed like lunatics in the first 30 minutes and maybe we're not fit enough to do that for the whole game yet because we had no preseason, but it showed the players are committed to Pep's football 100%.

We had it exceptionally easy for a couple of seasons, 198 points has never been done before, and won't be done again, but even in that centurions season we dropped points in 1/6 games. We had long spells where we weren't winning games. I don't remember there being so much animosity towards the players and Pep, I don't remember this sense of entitlement to an easy win and anything else is a travesty requiring players lined up against the wall or Pep getting replaced.

Leeds were really good. We saw that when the (apparently on a compeltely different plane to us) Liverpool side conceded 3 and could have conceded many more. BIelsa is an exceptional coach, Leeds will finish in the top 10 and take a few more scalps. They will take away all structure from the game and make it end to end madness against a lot of teams.

Unfortunately, in an absolute downpour, Ederson, who was excellent mostly, made 3 or 4 great saves and was the 2nd best keeper in the league at claiming crosses and corners last season made a mistake. They scored, we dropped a couple of points, it happens. Sterling should have ended the game, that's annoying but he is what he is, he helps us out a lot more than he hurts us.

Pep isn't upset post match, he's laughing and smiling. He wants the title more than anyone posting on here, he works harder for Manchester City than anyone, and he knows with 6 players out, against a really good side, no preseason, in an insane condensed season, sometimes you're going to drop a couple of points.

I'm not sure how to make this a more succinct point, but I just think quite a lot of our fans just need to fucking relax and stop living with this mindset where we have to win every single game we play while looking world class from 1-11 and having put the game to bed inside half an hour.

I'm sure the usual brigade will turn up and tell me to fuck off for being a happy clapper, but christ, in 2020, with a pandemic keeping us cooped up, if you're frothing at the mouth with anger from the line up being released on twitter to the full time whistle then I'm not sure what the point is.
Good grief, you're so pompous.

Was more in his element when the game was end to end and he could show his better qualities, but first half showed his liability. No attacking aptitude and made couple of mistakes in the last league which seems to have affected him, is now playing too deep and missed quite a few stray balls and interceptions/pressing situations when mahrez and foden dribbled on the right and leeds right back and right cm pressed.
He has not adapted well to us using a inside forward where he has to provide the width outside.

He is playing with a different partner every week & any mistakes he makes over a season, would be repeated by any other right back. There are no better options out there unless wevwant another pure attacker there.

I don't worry at all about Walker, if Dias, Laporte & Ake play well.

We know we aren't 100% though and so did Leeds, who I think you're selling short a bit there. We should be beating them yes but it was always going to be a tricky tie where we needed to be at our best... So to put it another way, we weren't anywhere near our best and still nearly won.
How many goals did Fulham put past them?

Fulham.

Can’t believe the negativity. It’s like all you see are a team of white shirts like we faced newly promoted Fulham. I haven’t been this impressed with a football team in years. Playing like we did tonight, we would’ve beat most teams. Rodri was rock solid, Dias and Laporte will be immense and our strikers are back soon.

Everyone thought Liverpool would be unbeatable last season but then came their dip. The projection would be that they would reach 108+ points, but look what happend. We lost to Leicester with Garcia and a sloppy Mendy, and we faced a really good team tonight.

We’ll come back.

Said the same after the Leicester game. We have built a side that would dominate in La Liga, but will not fare well in the PL. The problem being now when Pep goes we are left with another load of players we will struggle to sell on for decent money and have to spend big again.

I really don't know if the torrent of negativity on here will prove to be justified. I know I didn't think the performance was bad, in fact the first 20 minutes were excellent and the game should have been over at that point. That it wasn't and City didn't go on to win is mostly down to absolutely shocking shot accuracy from players who really are capable of doing better.

The other reason we didn't win is that Leeds got a spawny goal thanks to a diabolical piece of goalkeeping, why a goalkeeper is trying to punch two handed is beyond me. Our keeper did make some good saves so there is no denying Leeds had chances but they are capable of playing some clever football - they scored three at Klanfield.

We all knew going into the season that City have work to do to get back to a higher level. The team has had no preseason but has new players it needs to integrate and David Silva to replace as the regular centre left attacking midfielder plus we have both our usual centre forwards missing. The team shape and organisation is unquestionably in need of improvement but that is not entirely surprising in the circumstances.

In some ways the club has let itself down again in the transfer market by not doing something special although the three new players may all prove to be very good signings. All those players need to be given time to settle in, although Dias didn't actually look out of place today. Torres does look as though he will need some patience but he's a kid. Ake needs to used at left back for now to bring some straight-forward defensive solidity.

A settled back four of Walker Dias Laporte Ake might just give us a solid base to build greater confidence on which might just allow the forward players to be more relaxed and therefore more composed and accurate with their finishing.

We started well. Just couldn't keep up with the pace. Maybe down to early season start. We will kick into gear im sure in a few weeks. Stay calm. Only concern was Mendy silliness. We need a left back. And Mahrez has to be drilled about passing rather than shooting.

Sorry to say it but there is nobody out on the pitch to steady the ship when waters get choppy - a calming hand on the tiller.....WE MISS KOMPANY and I am not sure they come along that often

Meh! This team won't dominate in LaLiga either.

Post of the year.

You'll get pelters though.

“If you can meet with triumph and disaster, and treat those two imposters just the same”
I wonder if Kipling was a City fan.

At least we didn’t lose! Yes that’s looking for a silver lining but a point is a point. We’ve needed a striker for years but haven’t got one, Jesus was bought in 2017 actually the Christmas before, all the money spent on defenders and midfielders but no striker.

Mendy, Mahrez and Walker, ffs three disasters waiting to happen. I wonder if Guardiola is sticking with Mendy because it doesn’t want to admit he’s been a flop? Maybe. Mahrez flatters when we are playing well, Walker just loses concentration at vital moments.

all good !
