Leeds United (A) Post Match Thread

It was a really enjoyable game. Loved how space there was.

Really worried though - Leeds are clearly a v good team, but one we should be winning against if we want to keep pressure on Liverpool.

This is not analysis, I know, but I don't think as a team we are more than the sum of our parts - Leeds certainly are.

By 'great team' i put more emphasis on 'team'. They don't have to be packed with superstars or have a cabinet full of silver. Eleven men, playing together as a tight unit, running for each other, and themselves into the ground that stick to the plan.
Every time Leeds went forward they had 5, 6, 7 players around our box very quickly. Defensivly they were the same.
Leeds were very unlucky not to get a point in scouseland and i'll guarantee they will take points off all the top sides this season if they continue as they've started.

the game and result always looks better the next day and after picking holes out of the game yesterday
its a plus that we can only get much much more better when the squad is fully fit and getting players back
new player in the defence in ruben dias and he looked the part with laporte, little signs of the old mendy we signed ? but then he went fucked it up with some shocking stuff and rightly so questions about his place in the team today

i still think this season will be all over the place in the premier league and teams will blow up and go on a run like city, we are short in first team squad members, the bench looks weak ? nothing to turn and change the game when we need something

aguero and jesus need to get back quick and city must look at bringing in another striker just to help the team and its shape because when we play the false 9 or sterling up front its easy to defend, the other teams don't fear city at the moment

its starting to look like 1 of them Facebook pages where the African 'experts' invade the place with their 'expert' opinions of where everything is going wrong....they tend to jump shit & follow another club when things aren't going good......

The biggest concern for me is I already know that we will not see our best 11( in the right positions) start a game this season.

That is a massive concern.
 
The goal conceded was bad goalkeeping/unlucky, but they did hit the bar and have a couple of one on ones and a decent header or two away so I don't think it's wrong to question the defending. The major issue is no Aguero. We need him back asap. It's a complete afterthought for all the shitty pundits writing about us.
 
Looking at our team I just see us dropping points fairly regularly. The league is beyond us IMO. Must get top 4 but even that might be a real challenge this season. We're too easy to score against. The opposition rarely have to try hard in that respect. We're fragile when we do concede. This will be a season where cups will be our best bet. We need to sort left back ASAP but that may well have to wait until January or next summer. Mendy is a bomb scare at times. And Lord knows we need another striker. But again it'll be next summer. By which time Pep will be gone and the cycle will have to start again.
 
Some very insightful comments from Rodgers today in response to Rodri saying Leicester were lucky last week...

"You think you're Man City and you're playing little old Leicester and we've won 5-2.

"Rodri, I'm a big fan of, I think he's a wonderful player. But I think people want us to go and play a game that allows them to open us up and win 5-0!

"We played, but we didn't play how City would want us to play. I can understand, if you have the ball for that length of time and you don't create what you're expected to create. And when the opposition you are playing are very dangerous in their game and play with courage, then, of course, it can be a little frustrating.

"The game was about denying space to the opponent. More times than not my team will try and deny space at the top end of the field.

"My strategy in this match (against City) was to take the game into our own half, make sure you were compact.

"We ran 9 and half kilometres more as a team than Manchester City. We had to work, we had to be compact, we had to be tight.

"When we broke through their pressure, we were always a threat. I thought we played we great maturity and confidence."

In essence, Rodri is fine when teams don't press and allow him to just sit and pass. Put pressure on him and he goes missing.

City have one way of playing and we've been sussed.

Sit back and hit us on the break as most of the team are bypassed by one long ball.
 
Normally, I wait for 24 hours, and try to avoid a knee-jerk response to any mixed performance. However, even after a period of reflection, I seem to be thinking and writing the same criticisms every week.
We always start brightly on the front foot, but the opposition Manager has a horrible habit of changing his tactics midway through the first half. Meanwhile, we stick to Plan A, and then slowly the same gaps appear behind our full backs.
On this occasion, I thought the major problems were further upfield, and apart from one bad mistake, I didn’t think Mendy was too bad. Foden and Mahrez were too peripheral, and it was only when Bernardo was introduced that we finally had a midfielder capable of passing the ball accurately at full speed.(De Bruyne was also poor)
Sterling tries too hard to win penalties, and frankly isn’t very good at it.
Gundogen looks better with every game that he doesn’t play, and dare I suggest that we’re missing his ball retention?
For me, the only plus marks were Rodri, Laporte, and Dias.
