I think restaurants need to advertise meals £10 per person or half price Monday to Wednesday for when they reopen but take payment now. That keeps money coming in while they're closed and if they have a restaurant full of people on those days when they come back, then that's more people buying drinks etc. Assuming they will reopen before Christmas a lot of people go for meals at that time of year. The decent restaurants will do well.

Pubs are a bit trickier but I'm sure they could come up with something. Makes sense to me.

Restaurants operate at around 65% dry margin, pubs (managed houses) wet margins are similar maybe a touch more at 70%, tenancy could be as little as 40%.

Now subtract wages at 25/30%.

Utility ...etc

Put simply there is no way to discount and still make it worthwhile to open the doors.

I'm very lucky to live in New Zealand. We have just gone 15 days with no covid cases in the community after a small outbreak.

Everyone arriving in the country has to go into a minimum 14 days quarantine in hotels which are guarded.

Life is as normal as it was before covid struck. We just had a Bledisloe Cup rugby game with about 30,000 people in the stadium.

Being a small isolated country has made it easier for us to keep the disease out.

I have a son in London and feel for all you in the UK who are trying to deal with the situation. Stay strong.

Surely money coming in for prepaid discounts while they're closed is better than £0 coming in?

Baring in mind some restaurants voluntarily carried on doing Eat Out To Help Out themselves during September(although I never found any of them...) they must be able to afford to do it.

didnt she break any covid rules in Scotland then? She went several places knowing she had symptoms and I read this morning that she went to church knowing she was positive presumably in Scotland. She also lied to the Snp party whip saying someone in her family was unwell so she had to return. i dont think anyone believes her lame excuses. I dont see why she isnt being investigated by Police Scotland aswel.

She went to church in Scotland but it was prior to the positive test result. Although she was feeling symptoms I don't think this constitutes a criminal matter, hence no action from Police Scotland (someone correct me if I'm wrong). I think the criminal aspect only began AFTER she was confirmed positive and chose to travel on a train from London to Scotland, thus the criminal aspect will be treated by whichever force where the offence began - in this case London (BTP jurisdiction?)

I should say that this is in no way an effort to defend the idiot. She should resign and be hung out to dry amongst the media. Every bit as bad as if not worse than Dominic Cummings.

Race between medicine and the seasons. We are just realising that we haven't seen Covid-19 in the Winter in the Northern hemisphere. We caught wave 1 in the Spring and it faded with the onset of our Summer.

Medicine will save us: antibody treatments and vaccines are looking good (apart from Astrazeneca/Oxford which remains suspended in the US) but how much infection do we have to go through first?

Were awaiting test results again, second time in four weeks after the little one came home from school with a temperature. Probably just a reaction to the flu vaccine she had last week, but been told to not expect the results until next Tuesday, which will be five days after the test was taken, due to lab backlogs.

In the meantime the primary school are chasing us for the result so they know if the bubble at school is at risk, and my wife is panicking about not being able to take her elderly mum for her cancer review at the hospital on Tuesday. Not sure mum in law can make it there alone, she's not coherent with any predictability.

Again, as with last time and the months before, the issue seems to be a lack of capacity in the labs and in informing of results over the phone. Why hasn't this been addressed? It's the weak point in the system and needs attention.

If it's 4 to 5 days now, January won't be much fun. The amount of people missing work, children missing school, because of the rest backlog must be in the tens of thousands per week, if not more.

Then she’s fine then. Guidelines have always been open to interpretation, according to Johnson and ‘I will stay in the bar after 10‘ Hancock.....

New lighthouse lab opening at the end of October which should see capacity go to 500,000 tests a week.

There's also the prospect of rapid testing coming through which doesn't need to go off to labs. You get the result there and then but that has been talked about for a very long time and always seems to be a month away.

Good luck with the tests.

I think it's probably easier to impose in NZ, given the sensitivity to invasive species, etc, that is known by everyone there.

Hadn't realised the internationals were going again - sounds like a tense one!

Thanks. I think we're just a bit bummed out on day 3 of behind stuck at home with the kids and they're both tearing around the place with no symptoms now. Feels like we're being punished for doing the right thing, even though the temperature was high for just a few hours. They said 48-72 hours when we has the test, now it seem 96-120 is the norm.

Good to hear something is in place too. Maybe it's a spike in demand given that the flu vaccines are being handed out now, which invariably will increase demand for tests.

I agree except Cummings was worse, because he changed a lot of peoples behaviour, she probably hasn’t. Secondly he’s suffered no consequences and is still running the country, sorry I mean advising, she has been stripped of any influence she had.

Having Jacinda at the helm is also a contributing factor to your success.

Ship over Hancock and chums to run things over there for 6 months and New Zealand will turn into Shutter Island.

Pleased for you guys, lovely country, shame it’s so far away as would love to move there.

Given there is still 4 years of parliament at circa £85k a year plus 5 years pension accrued gives £10k a year and around £26k loss of seat payment (if she stands and is voted out)

Went to my local tonight ,it was brilliantly organised. Had a little chat with the landlady/ owner and she was nearly in tears about having to close. Didn’t won’t to discuss it . It’s a small bar feel so sorry for them
Everyone is being punished for the failings of a few and a complete lack of enforcement By Local Authorities and the HSE. There have been many cases of the rapid transmission of this virus in meat processing factories where businesses are clearly not enforcing social distancing and keeping their workers safe. But the HSE have to my knowledge have not presecuted any company and the government have not decided to shut thoses industries down wholesale.

Only influence she had was a vote she still has that. Some MPs resign the Whip as they believe it removes restrictions Chucka's gang for instance.

Roche who are the biggest company behind tests across the NHS has some kind of supply problem related to a new 'warehouse'. I have read about this in the papers. Apparently GPs have been asked to put non-urgent tests like cholesterol, blood tests on one side for the moment and it's also impact on Covid tests. I don't know anything about it other than what I have come across in the papers.

Sadly I can only see demand going up and up.

At first look you might think so but you would still be operating at a loss whenever the product is sold.

Would you give cash for a voucher to a business which might not be in operation in a months time?

For almost all businesses its a very difficult time. For the hospitality industry its a nightmare!

I'd suggest if you couldn't find any restaurants doing so voluntary there couldn't have been many thinking it would be worthwhile. ;)

Not for long , I’m sure she’ll resign or be recalled at some point. At least she can be removed by voters unlike Cummings.

Have your government given any indication of what they plan on doing should there be no vaccine forthcoming or will international travel in or out of New Zealand be effectively finished forever? These governments must be very confident of this fabled vaccine seeing as they’re putting all their eggs in the basket of hiding away until the silver bullet arrives. What happens if it never materialises or just doesn’t work and the entire country of NZ (or Australia etc) has no acquired immunity at all whilst the rest of the world does and has covid in circulation? Will they be isolated forever?

I love NZ having toured it in a motorhome four times. Would be a shame if this was impossible in the future. Having said that, my time there definitely helps understand why it is so much easier to adopt this strategy with such low crowding and open wilderness instead of packed cities, universities and crumbling infrastructure like we have here in the UK!
