We're on a lag with deaths, it's representative of behaviour 2/3 weeks ago.

We need to proactively prevent a rise in cases and target areas where it is escalating by tackling whatever issues in the community are causing it.

A full lockdown would be too damaging and although it's difficult it's right to avoid it at pretty much all costs.

You are absolutely right although you have to remember when people were moaning about why people flying into the country weren't being made to quarantine people then moaned when that was introduced. Lockdown they said and when we did it was open up the country. Open the pubs for our mental health, then it's why are we letting people crowd into pubs. The government, not just here but all over world are dammed if they do and dammed if they don't. It's a delicate balancing act which at the moment looks as if it's not right and I fear that it will be at least another four weeks and possibly harsher measures before we start to see a brighter outlook. Ultimately I think the government here is trying to keep the economy going in some ways whilst trying to keep deaths down until a vaccine is available. Selfish attitudes from many don't help though. A guy on the radio this morning summed it up for me when he said we all, young and old, have to ask ourselves what are we doing to help prevent the spread. Are we wearing masks, maintaining social distancing, not mixing etc. If the answer is no then that's why the virus will get out of control. Kind of sums it up really, it's all about taking responsibility ourselves and until that happens we are in for the long haul

In addition, over the last couple of months, even most posters who thought we would see a second wave seemed to think deaths would peak between 100 and 200 a day this time. We all like to hope for the best but if the number of patients going into hospital with Covid approaches the first wave levels then even taken into account improvements in medicine / treatments, the peak of deaths might be closer to 500 per day, sadly. (Although the changes in counting deaths might help to keep the figures lower).

Someone at work is isolating pending a result, and already the people who work in close contact (less than half a meter never mind two) are already trying to say they wont need to isolate. Indoors with no distancing, screens, masks or anything in place I cant imagine how this could be anything other than "close contact"

Do they get paid for staying away? I would stay off but everyone’s circumstance is different. Some hard moral choices facing people with this virus. A lot will be left wanting.

I note the Institute for Health Metrics Evaluation (IHME - part of the University of Washington) has a median projection of circa 127,000 UK deaths by the end of Jan.

We've got laptops so can work from home which makes it all the more daft that the office is at full capacity in my opinion. During lockdown we had about 20% of people in the office max.

My mates dad is 63 went in hospital last week he's in a coma and on a vent now poor man. Was in the high risk category shielded for months and still caught it.

They should have shown inside the covid wards in the first wave to make people aware that the deaths are more than just a number.

I suppose that's no different to being hit by the flu or colds repeatedly. Could be mother nature solving our over / ageing population crisis with a disease that picks of the old and weak.

Its the kind of thing that doesn't end well isn't it. People can only take so much and once they think they are having the blatant piss taken out of them then the revolts start.

It's not a lockdown is it? If you live in a tier 2 area you can travel to a non tier 2 area and visit them in their house, what's practical about that?

Scientists completely disagree about everything, a lockdown should be just that, a lockdown surely?

They've even extended the visits in care homes and allowed people to touch their relatives while they visit, what can possibly go wrong there?

You do know people havent been allowed to visit let alone tough their relatives since march , you would have to have a heart of stone to not let them now

The England hospital data bad too

Up 240 today to 3905 was 2783 last week.

This is the largest daily rise yet.

Ventilators up 15 to 441 (was 349 a week ago)

With the other naions added there is now over 5000 Covid patients in UK hospitals around a quarter of where we were at the peak. This second wave is really taking off sadly.

It was 3448 a week ago.

521 on ventilators also. (it was 410 a week ago)

And there we go. Right wing, left wing or middle they are still more qualified than you or I, but you dismiss them due to your own beliefs on it and refuse to consider anything else. There are lots of scientists sat on either side of the fence and the ones that are against lockdowns are not all right wing and those that are pro-lockdown are not all left wing. Maybe they believe their scientific views and don't base this on their political leaning?

You are believing the barrington lot without looking at the list of who wrote it , take out the cranks and very few actual emminent , if any , people are on it versus all the real emminent ones against them , there is not a huge difference in what the leading experienced scientists from each country are saying , what the problem is they are hamstrung by the political leaders playing politics with it , if the leading scientists were left to it i suspect the world would be in better shape
