Now would be a great time to ramp up spending on infrastructure projects that we are committed to anyway, such as a large expansion of rail electrification
Spot on. I had heard that they were going to electrify the Manchester Leeds line. That would be excellent.

Fuck off man up, let me guess your income and standard of living will be fine no matter what. Worse was when we had bombs being dropped on us, now a virus that makes very few people ill (and those people tend to already be ill or close to deaths door) is ruining the way we live, the vest majority of people will be fine if they catch it but yet the vest majority are being made to suffer to keep people like you happy. Generations to come are going suffer financially because of the actions of this government to save a few.
That was the first wave mate. Lots of 18-40 year olds are getting hospitalised in the 2nd wave.

I’m sorry but if they allow people to cram into their relatives houses this Christmas, or give fluffy restrictions that people have no issue flouting, then they are more murderous than I thought. People shouldn’t need telling that christmas (as we know it) is cancelled this year. But they do need telling.

I think this country has an increasingly unhealthy focus with xmas, its a load of bollocks and a money making racket, and an excuse for people to act like cunts. I am afraid there is a danger that this will be exposed for all to see this year when it could cost 1000s of lives.

If a lock down is needed now it will not be anywhere near safe to lift that lock down at Xmas and people need to accept it. There will be another Xmas and people need to get a grip.

Firstly they are British Soldiers and secondly they are respected the World over by other nations forces when on "tour". I take it you have seen them at first hand on "Tour", so how many times did you do Afghanistan, Iraq or Northern Ireland ? No I didn't think so Arsehole.
I was actually referring to the historical army from the 100 years war to begin with, then the Civil war and then the French wars again finishing with the Napoleonic wars. Times when the army was English and only latterly British.

I quote from a book about the Duke of Wellington:
The expression “scum of the earth” uttered by Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington, has become etched in history as a great commander’s miserable opinion of his men. In a letter to Henry, Third Earl Bathurst, from Huarte Spain, on 2 July, 1813, Wellington wrote, “we have in the service the scum of the Earth as common soldiers.”
His opinion did not change with time. Nearly twenty years later, on 4 November, 1831, he declared in a conversation with Philip Henry, Fifth Earl Stanhope, “I don’t mean to say that there is no difference in the composition or therefore the feeling of the French army and ours. The French system of conscription brings together a fair sample of all classes; ours is composed of the scum of the Earth—the mere scum of the Earth. It is only wonderful that we should be able to make so much out of them afterward. The English soldiers are fellows who have enlisted for drink—that is the plain fact—they have all enlisted for drink.”

There are many other similar quotes and opinions from historical figures going back to the 100 years war.

The British army today is fantastic and does not draw from the seam of society that it used too in centuries long gone by. It is ultra professional and indeed improves the lives of all who join it.

My point is that the seam of society who don't give a shit and are only interested in their own enjoyment has always been there. More so in this country than elsewhere.

Good day to you.

I could understand a full lockdown if it was to stop deaths whilst we get the vaccine which they announce is ready so that’s why It’s needed.

but if this to stop Covid deaths then it won’t . It never worked last time and it won’t work this time.

all this does is delay transmission. so you lockdown in November and come out in December and do people think the virus will have gone? Of course not it will still be there and the virus transmission starts again.
It is to reset at a lower level so as not to destroy the nhs , think of the nurses and drs who will have to go through what they went through before , a lot are mentally scarred from before and scared for their own families

I dont understand why people cant understand that the winter was always going to be a very difficult time , short proper lockdowns is our best , maybe only defence we have , it wont make it go away but that is not the point , it is to stop the huge spikes and loss of life

They are doing, my mate that's a copper in Fylde area said that is literally all they are doing, patrolling, fining when caught, getting businesses closed down via local council etc.

The majority they fine are on furlough/low income/benefits anyway so just can't pay it. Doesn't deter people as they know they can't pay :(
Then remove any state benefit and lock the fuckers up somewhere. They have to be made to understand

Thanks for clarifying, I read it as recent history. Good day to you also.

Brainwashed, manufactured consumers.

To keep me happy , i have a very low income basic life mate . You are missing the point entirely , we ALL can catch and spread covid around and it makes people die , simple enough

I don’t wear a vest.

well we have had the summer to prepare haven’t we , so why haven’t we.

we have built nightingale hospitals ready for the surge but as you have said we don’t have the nurses and doctors to deal with It. Why build them then. It’s like building a new fighter jet but not having pilots.

i know winter is a tough time we all do. it’s not like that’s rocket science

we are in lockdown the highest there is have been for a while tier 3 and before tier 3 we were in a state of higher restrictions .

we have a policy a local lockdown policy which we in greater Manchester have been under . The main impact is on businesses .

we talked about a ”new normal” which was trying to get on with our life with the virus by social distancing etc.

it seems as cases and the r is high in the south it’s a national lockdown again ? Why ? We have a strategy a tier strategy why not carry on with it which reflects local conditions and hospital pressure,

france Germany etc may be going to a lockdown but they havent been under the tier restriction strategy we have been to control the virus.

if we lockdown again it would seem to me an admission that this tier policy didnt work and is a load of bollox.

even the WHO don’t advise national lockdowns anymore as a strategy . The poor will get poorer.

Manchester has had Tier 3 for a week, Nottingham a matter of days. W Yorks from next week. There not been a chance to see whether the measures work. This seems a knee jerk reaction.

We dont have any control of it , that is the point
Look we have to get through the winter as best as we can , tens of thousands of staff went back to the nhs last time , a lot died so we probably dont have that number this time . We built the nightingales in case the hospitals were overwhelmed , why do i have to keep explaining?
The WHO are now talking about breaking transmission

The Manchester Nightingale has started to take patients. The areas NHS Trusts have to supply the staff to treat the respective patients, if they wish to use the Nightingale.

From my experience in the shop, Old people forget to do the right thing, a lot of younger people don't give a shit, while a fairly large amount of middle aged men seem to deliberately break the rules as some weird refusal to be told what to do.
Must admit i was in an asda the other day And the only 2 without masks were 2 45 ish year old blokes who seemed to be staring at people waiting for a reaction

The belfast one has had patients for a while , a nurse with covid died there a couple of weeks ago . I dont know how many who came back have stayed , we must have the numbers to ,as you say , be able to use the nightingales
