That's politics in the modern era though. Atlee was possibly the last politician here to change things for the better overall. You could argue that Thatcher also did but that she also made life worse for many as well.

Politicians say one thing one week, then do a complete U-turn the next, as we've seen. But most aren't completely unpredictable, with little or no regard for the truth. It is what it is. One day we might get back to politicians having integrity and being honest, instead of having only self-interest and/or simply toeing the party line, however illogical that may be.

Why get yourself worked up about it? We have to try to do the best we can for ourselves, our families and our communities.

I'd give a shout out for Harold Macmillan and Harold Wilson.

Meaning what?

Is this cos you're happy to see this election as a sidestep not progress?

Incredible as it may seem you’re not the only one who would like to see more progressive politics on both sides of the pond and just about everyone who posts in the US threads has said at one point or other that Biden is far from ideal.

I suspect that for all you claim to know what the working man wants the evidence is that progressive policies are a hard sell. The number of votes Trump has got despite his utter cuntishness suggests his racist misogynistic rhetoric appeals to many a working man

Don’t fully understand senate elections but doesn’t Georgia going blue and the two senate seats there being won by such a tight margin by the Republican incumbents mean that the seats go for election again in January.

Did I pick that up wrong last night?
GA is a 50% state for Senate.

If no-one gets 50%, there’s a run-off. Hence, with Perdue falling below 1/2+1 of the total vote, and the other race having the vote split between multiple runners, they both go to a run off!

It’ll be a turnout election!
Both sides desperately want those seats, but they’re VITAL to Dems to split the Senate and give Vp Kamala Harris the tie-breaker on legislation.

if there is to be ANY “Biden Agenda” for at least the first 2 yrs, he needs a Senate that can pass legislation Republicans won’t support...and McConnell is a big threatener of financial support against his own people to keep them in line.

Okay, I get the point made.

My worry is seeing the US get worse, despite the 'nice man' being in charge. Just because he will obfuscate and withhold data from the public (and he will) doesn't mean he'll be that much better.

Failed policies and promises opened the door for the Orange Gimp and there's no putting the genie back in the bottle now.

The US is coming to a boil and I don't know how they will handle it.

There's no commonality, politicians have purposely put different groups against each other and this is the end result. Without commonality there is no discourse and without discourse there is animosity, nobody is going to hold hands round the campfire here, they are more likely going to carry on shooting each other.

I compiled the below list of all the theories I had thus far seen as to why many Latinx voters may have cast their ballots as they did and posted it yesterday.

Each (or combinations of a few) of these have been posited by various analysts, pundits, scholars, community leaders, politicians, and talking heads I follow. And there will be many more to come, once the data resolves more clearly and composites of pre-elections forecasts/modelling and new ‘exit polling’ are created and refined (which is the process for creating meaningful post-election data with secret ballot elections).

As I said in the below post, I am waiting for better data before deciding which have merit (if any).
I respect the post, but I want to ask you a question regarding it.

If your data post is true, I'm assuming the same 'socialist' language was held in 2008 and 2012 under Obama and 2016 under Clinton, in Florida, in this instance.

How does Biden lose the same argument with the same tropes used before...?

Biden will calm it down

can't imagine the chaos if Trump was given another 4 years! feels like every single day he does something controversial

Read Abigail Spanberger’s comments.

Wholeheartedly agree!

She sees the writing on the wall for the off year election, which, if Republicans can take the House (and they will be trying) while they hold the Senate, then the Legislative Agenda becomes REPUBLICAN, and Biden would have to govern by veto!!!

No President wants to run his Party into a Presidential election touting his opposition vetoes!!!

Instead of a Blue Tsunami, it would be a Red Tide (for those of you familiar with such an event)!

The GOP haven't won the senate though.

That's the massive hole in that theory. The Democrats will be massive favourites in the 2 Georgia runoffs, and with the Trumps cast out of the Republican party it's very unlikely the Republican's are going to get support for 2 very unpopular candidates in Loeffler and Perdue.

And by January, The democrats promising they will provide economic relief for the average person while coronavirus ravages the country is going to be a lot more of a motivating argument then McConnell asking for the ability to obstruct for 2 years.

I hope you're right. The dynamic of those two races is going to change dramatically with Trump gone. The Democrats will pull out all the stops, tons of money is going to flow in to both campaigns, it's going to be an interesting watch.

But early for revisionist (fanciful) history, don’t you think?!

Could you let him warm his seat and get his feet under the desk first, before rewriting 2008-2016 and then foretelling 2021-2024!

I don’t know how they’ll handle it either, and will watch with far more interest after the last 4 years and especially this year.

I think the Dems will have to be mindful that the margins in so many states were far too tight considering what they were up against. You would think Trump should be obliterated after his performance but the message coming out of all this is, the Dems cannot ignore the black working class vote that got them over the line in so many cities and urban areas. That vote is a loan.

I think they are quite aware that it is the very people who are worse let down by democracy that have made sure that democracy is upheld in America, by going to great lengths to get their vote registered.

Also the Dems cannot ignore the vast swathes of rural Red counties and states that make it even possible for Trump to compete.

They are not a shoe-in in any election and it’ll be as interesting to see how they react to this result as much as the GOP.

I will try and put this as simply as I can.

Biden is a compromise politician. McConnell holds all the cards to the senate, at this point. Logic dictates McConnell will allow Biden none of his 'promises', but will be happy to strangle any funding meant to help the people, i.e., infrastructure, healthcare etc. And, of which I speak of, is about to be at the stage of being struck down in the Supreme Court. As posted earlier, McConnell is going to have a say on who the cabinet is if he's going to 'work with' Biden.

Biden is also looking to be the 'law and order' president and to be seen as 'tough' on the world stage.

So, I have no idea what you mean by Biden will 'calm it down'.

Moscow Mitch will have to have an iron grip on his members to ensure they stick together!
His members?

Looks to me he'd have difficulty gripping his todger to take a piss....

Well, without refined composite data, I can’t even begin to try answer your question. And even then any analysis (by anyone) is just going to be a highly educated guess. Though, I obviously do think we should try to make ‘good’ guesses.

But I will say that I don’t think the same ‘socialist’ rhetoric and fear-mongering (on both sides, mind) was used in those previous cycles.

To me, this election saw a distinct shift to 50s style ‘pinko/red scare’ tactics, mostly from the Trump/Republican side, which were not really present in 2016 or the recent previous elections. It was at toxic levels at various times, framed around hyperbolic assertions that the democrats would destroy private property rights, nationalise everything, and control all aspects of an American’s life. This was not just “Obama is gonna take your guns”. This was total societal and economic collapse of the nation. The dial was turned up to 11. It even caused more ferocious infighting within the Democratic Party than seen in 2016. And I do think it was designed, in part, to appeal to the Latinx community who have had horrific direct/indirect experiences with failed socialist states. Whether it actually worked remains to be seen.

I really don’t think previous elections compare.

Is there any truth in the story of something like 27% of the mail in vote in South Florida not having made it through the USPS on time?

Heard the story a couple of days ago but nothing since.
