I'm not sure this news is exciting enough to merit the enormous font. The Govt simply has to put the bits in question back in, send the bill back to the Lords and it goes through.

You realise that this Bill will put Ministers above the law ? Able to take any action they want without judicial oversight.

It removes one of the key safeguards of our democracy.

That is why there was such an overwhelming rejection from the Lords.

Everyone should be outraged but of course they are not.

Sad.

It will be fine until one of 'the other side' does it. Then it will be an outrage. That's the problem with setting new precedents and giving yourselves new powers; They have a habit of coming back to bite you on the arse.

So far with the ‘digging in‘ on the IM Bill we’re looking to put ourselves outside the EU and offside with the incoming Biden administration. We can’t even make nice with China given our stance on Hong Kong (and rightly so in this instance.)

Pissing off all three major geopolitical and/or trading blocs is hell of an achievement, especially while everyone is battling against a pandemic.

Strange comment from a Remainer as the DUP and Sinn Fein are complaining about EU intransigence NOT that of the UK.
Proof positive that the UK Internal Market Bill is required to me sure the Good Friday agreements are not broken.

The IM Bill does not address the issues raised in the DUP/Sin Fein letter. The UK Govt has zero interest in the concerns of NI. People like Gove are hostile to the Good Friday Agreement.

To resolve these issues requires pragmatism from both the EU and the UK and a deal to mitigate some of the NI concerns. Pragmatism and a deal are in short supply currently.

A govt voting itself above the law is not unique, although it is traditionally a feature of authoritarian regimes. If it is the will of Parliament that a Govt is exempt from the rule of law then that is what will happen. It is beholden on the rest of us to try and ensure that the will of Parliament is pushed in the opposite direction.

Alas, the temptation for any Govt going forward is to leave these exemptions in place, which is why it is usually best not to break the ‘rule of law’ covenant in the first place.

Brexit is the great ‘wraithing‘ - it kills everything, leaving only hollow words and empty phrases :)

The Government are going to reinstate the clauses in the IMB bill taken out by the Lords.
When? I hear you ask.
Well surely this week or ASAP to show that we mean business with the EU.
Err ..actually no.
The clauses will be reinstated NEXT MONTH apparently which will be after the negotiations are concluded.
Which shows that it is just a threat.
But hopefully the EU won't notice.
