Ray Clemence RIP

RIP Ray , a fine goalkeeper and came across as a finer man

What sad news. He was one of the best I ever saw and played in a time when fans had a lot more respect for opponents and each other than often seems to be the case nowadays. Especially those fans of the two clubs he played for in his heyday. A sad loss to our game. RIP.

Would of played lots more times for England if it wasn’t for the fact that Peter Shilton was around at the same time.
Another footballer from my youth taken.
Condolences to his family.

I remember us playing Spurs at Maine rd around Sept 85 ( we won 2 1 ) and the teams switched round before kick off.The whole North stand rose as one to give Ray an ovation as he ran towards the goal.He raised his hands above his head to applaud in return. A great memory of a quality keeper.

I remember him when I was a young 9 yr old, England v Scotland Home International in 79, making an AMAZING save off a huge deflection from one of his own defenders. One of the best saves ever (imo)

Seemed quite small for a keeper at 6 foot, when Shilton, Big Joe and Phil Parkes were all HUGE men

A sad day. Nice to see so many glowing tributes

I’d forgotten about Phil Parkes, and there was also Jimmy Rimmer, who was another fantastic ‘keeper from that time.

In the late 70s and 80s there seemed little to choose between him and Shilton. We were lucky to have them both.

as a kid playing in goals, big joe, ray clemence and peter shilton were my heroes , my school kit had a yellow shirt , red shorts and red socks, i would look at myself imagining being ray clemence ,

rip to an old hero of mine.

peter bonnetti, marvin day, they were names back in the day, not forgetting burridge, always remember his energetic pre match , however the reserve keepers were usually gash, paddy roache, keith mccrae to name a couple :)
