Marcus Rashford lobbying govt to help vulnerable children

I disagree from brutal experience during the credit crunch. Sweden has a very generous system and people still fill the jobs.
Then we agree to disagree. I have no desire to fall out mate and am really sorry you fell on hard times. All I will reiterate is that our government under U.C provition provides the basics that are necessary to live. A married couples allowance and an allowance for each individual child, a housing allowance to pay your rent etc. The original argument is that they cannot feed their children a simple dinner time meal during school holidays. If you do not feed your child then it is of your own volition. No food for me or the wife first and then no payment to any saving rent and rates. Sell my house, sell my suite, sell my telly etc etc etc but never let my kids go hungry. Priorities whether we like them or not.

You miss the salient point. Many kids don't have parents with the ability to even budget so why punish children. They didn't choose to be born. It's mean spirited and misguided. The world is not perfect. I am not perfect.

It took longer than I thought for the "He earns X amount, pay for it himself" brigade to make it to national newspapers

Can people not just accepct they are lucky and some are less fortunate? It's not that difficult

According to the latest figures, there are 4.2m children in this country living in poverty and you’re seemingly arguing against the government providing them with free school meals. I guess we’ll never agree on this, but I find your lack of empathy a bit depressing tbh. The actual cost of feeding them is relatively minor when you look at some of the sums being frivolously spent by the government elsewhere. Agree though that the minimum wage should also be raised. That’s a given.
I find your ability to comprehend far more complexing tbh. I do not intend to come across as disingenuous toward the needy or yourself being our beloved leader, even though your intent is to call me out to forum as being unsympathetic. The fact of the matter is that the parents have already been paid money to feed their children and if they then choose not to do so is for themselves to scrutinise or examine. You mention that our government frivolously spends money like confetti on utter shite and of that, I can not digress. However that is a whole new tangent and no way correlated to the fact that the meals are already factorized in. If you want to convince me beyond reproach, then you mentioned a family with 5 children on universal credit. List the amount payable to that hypothetical family and then show me where the parent cannot afford to feed them a simple dinner time meal after paying out essentials. It's a safety net to feed cloth and keep folk warm until such time as they can find gainful employment. No one wants to see children go hungry but no one on this thread has mentioned such a wicked thing.

I cant disagree with that.

I have said what I wanted to say and my wife has proof read my posts before insertion. I have no desire to discuss the issue further as I want to go on the music thread. All the best and take care:

The good thing that I've noticed after the Mail story hit social media is that it has received total condemnation for the attempted negative portrayal of Rashford. This is a large step in stopping this kind of story and will hopefully make editors think twice before the next instance. A huge part in this has been played by Sterling in standing up to the media when it happened to him.

Yeah, it's slightly bittersweet to me. Jonathan Liew has just written a big article condemning the Mail.

I know that this is progress, I know it's because of Sterling taking them on and making this and issue, but there was never this outrage when he was the victim, and it does annoy me seeing people rush to get in their support for him in ASAP when they were silent on Sterling for years, and I haven't really seen any recognition that he's the one who has lead to this change in attitude that fortunately Rashford is benefitting from.

Other than Rashford himself crediting Sterling as being a forerunner you mean?

OK great, let's see the fucking sports media who kept silent while he was persecuted by the Sun and Mail pay their dues and maybe apologise for not siding with him the way they are Rashford? Acknowledge their sins? I still remember the same journalists who are so outspoken about this Mail article trying to argue there was nothing racist about how Sterling was covered and blaming him for playing into it by...buying his mum a house etc.

Instead of being acknowledged as someone who changed those attitudes, Sterling and the horrendous abuse he dealt with for years just seems to have been airbrushed from history now the Guardian sports desk and Gary Lineker have a second chance to show how great they are by sticking up for a black footballer getting unfair attacks.

Marcus is now launching a Book Club so kids can experience the escapism reading provides, which is very cool.

The report continues 'because Marcus had to prioritise food over books as a child'

This is getting too much now, pass me the fucking sick bucket.......

His PR team are playing a fucking blinder.

Yes, i know, i am a massive ****/twat/despicable human being and whatever else anyone wants to throw at me.

If the parent was blowing all their UC cash or whatever other benefits they receive on drink drugs or whatever else it’s still no fault of the kids and a system should be in place so that children in this fucking country never ever go hungry. It’s a simple as this. It’s never the child’s fault.

Not sure Marcus would have had that choice really... his mum surely decided on putting food on the table before buying a book.

I don't believe a word of it pal.

He may have had it hard as a child, but so do millions and they get by.

I speak from experience......i had fuck all as a kid, free school meals, living in a cold, crumbling, house and dressed in hand me downs etc. My mum brought me and my brother up alone, with next to no income, but she always ensured we had an education.

There are libraries, charity shops etc.Books can always be sourced.

I’m against schools providing kids with meals out of term time, it doesn’t mean I’m against feeding kids before the usual go down that route. I do however think Rashford’s heart is very much in the right place and people should get off his back.

If the meals don't come out of a schools budget but instead are funded direct then I have no issue with feeding kids out of term times. Going by my Wife's two schools there are a hell of a lot of families that need help.
