Diego Maradona

Sad news, the guy was a legend. Top 3 of all time, arguably the best.

Thoughts with Sergio too has he must have been fairly close.

Apparently the lockdown in Argentina just caused him to spiral into an alcoholic pit. People were really worried about him last month when he was hospitalised because he looked awful and it seems like either the damage was done, or he couldn't be pulled out of the spiral.

I'm torn between thinking 60 is tragically young and he was lucky to get there - both are probably true.
Yep, 60 for a big boozer who had a brush with death from coke use a few years ago is not bad. He had his warnings but just like George Best he didn't take his second chance, RIP.

Along with the fact he's up against professionals, you also have to take into account how concentrated the best players have become at the top clubs. In Maradona's day, pre Bosman, pre super clubs, you didn't have teams with 11 world class players and more on the bench.

But then again, what would Maradona have achieved with 10 world class players next to him? A lot of those Napoli players never got near international football, they just weren't that good.

Tactically as well, the game has trended towards defences. The number of goals in the game is lower than back then. How do you factor in Messi's consistency too? Absolutely unprecedented levels and he repeated it for over a decade.

No right answer really, a lot of it is about how old you are.

logically Messi is the greatest in terms of the level of standards nowadays, but it is unfair as Maradona could easily be the greatest if he was born in this era.

Just feel due to fitness, dieting, the training methods always improving, the funding etc etc - if you were to put say Brazil's starting 11 now v Brazil starting 11 from the 70's at there prime... i reckon the nowadays team would absolutely smash the 70's

Gary linekar ‘hopefully he’ll find some comfort in the hands of God’ ... is he taking the piss

Same date as Best.
Sad day. He cheated and he knows it, but 'that' goal. Well it was rather special wasn't it.
I remember him at the 1994 WC going crazy at the cameras. A born entertainer and it's pretty strange to think Maradona is dead.

If you've not seen this yet, it is a must watch. A brilliant documentary about Maradonna, focusing on his life, his wife, women, money, drugs, the Mafia, politics, why the Italian nation turned on him(won't spoil it), his football career, and his time at Napoli, where he became a God, helping Napoli to win the title twice.
