Wonder if Shilton will now forgive him?
Yep, 60 for a big boozer who had a brush with death from coke use a few years ago is not bad. He had his warnings but just like George Best he didn't take his second chance, RIP.Apparently the lockdown in Argentina just caused him to spiral into an alcoholic pit. People were really worried about him last month when he was hospitalised because he looked awful and it seems like either the damage was done, or he couldn't be pulled out of the spiral.
I'm torn between thinking 60 is tragically young and he was lucky to get there - both are probably true.
Along with the fact he's up against professionals, you also have to take into account how concentrated the best players have become at the top clubs. In Maradona's day, pre Bosman, pre super clubs, you didn't have teams with 11 world class players and more on the bench.
But then again, what would Maradona have achieved with 10 world class players next to him? A lot of those Napoli players never got near international football, they just weren't that good.
Tactically as well, the game has trended towards defences. The number of goals in the game is lower than back then. How do you factor in Messi's consistency too? Absolutely unprecedented levels and he repeated it for over a decade.
No right answer really, a lot of it is about how old you are.
Agree a genius but never forget the handball!!Forget the handball. A true footballing genius.
