A 'union' of 27 where only two or three nations voices were ever significant.

Even now those same two voices are still trying to dictate over the others. How many of those 25 nations are fine with, and have been fine for a while, with the details of the trade deal, I wonder.

So it seems like France and the eu want full access to our waters. What other sovereign country would allow that?

ive also seen reports that the eu are considering a no deal brexit now. This is to make us suffer and then renegotiate with them in a year (see it their way) does that sound like a union we want to be part of. A union where France alone can dictate the actions of all others

I’m happy for us to go for no deal now

All EU cuntries allow full access to thir waters. They are all Sovereign countries.
All EU countries allow ful access to their energy markets, which the UK want access to. Which other countries allow full access to their energy markets to external agents? Why should they give the UK access without a quid-pro-quo?

Where I work we ut in weekend shifts in August & September to get extra product to the UK before the deadline. No deal has been on the cards for a while now.

The difference being they sell us energy, whereas they just want to take the fish. The quid pro quo would be for us to sell licencing to EU boats to fish just as they sell energy.

The electricity is sold to France as well. It’s used when it’s cheaper in one market and vice-versa. Micron doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

I personally think the three sticking points would be just as stuck. We've reached the natural end of negotiations - agreed on the stuff we can agree on and will have to part ways on the rest.

To clarify, as my original answer was misleading. The three sticking points would remain. The point was we will have given ourselves more time to prepare, and industry and businesses would have had chance to recover (hopefully) from Covid.

Inflicting a preventable shock on an already weakened economy is the stuff of fanatical ideologues.

Always makes me laugh to see the wailing when the EU play hardball and contrast it with the delight from the same people when we try and do the same.

I fail to see any wailing as you put it.

Loving the hardball though.

This is the point I made last night. UVL cannot shift beyond the E27 mandate without risking their support for any deal. The coastal EU states are looking at ‘no deal’ being preferable to a ‘bad deal’, and so after four years we have come full circle.

Von der Leyen has the more difficult task today. She is speaking on behalf of 27 govts including 1—France—that is threatening to veto. But if she sticks rigidly to the current EU position, the talks will fail; an outcome that von der Leyen does not want.’ @spectator
I'm not sure how 'no deal' is preferable for fish. It looks like we've already conceded at least a three-year transition on fish so no deal means no transition.

I've been trying to get my head round whether an EU country could actually ban our shellfish exports. They could presumably impose a punitive tariff. But if a physical blockade would be against international law, we've set the precedent there of not being bothered about international law. I wonder if EU solidarity would extend to taking UK shellfish off the menu.

Suffer? What Leaver ever said we'd suffer from No Deal?

Not Johnson, of course.

It won’t be a blockade, just rigorous interpretation of the rules, meaning shellfish won’t be in a fit state by the time they have ticked every box.

EU wants 10 years, UK offering 3 on transition. EU won’t get 10, UK won’t get 3. I’ll see you at 5 :)

mcfc1632 has already accepted that as reasonable. I'm sure he could get a message to Saint Frost to say Bluemoon has sorted an acceptable compromise.

One that needs a deal.

And for the last time. The EU is there to represents the interests of its 27 members. The key word is members. This is just how they negotiate with non-members. It isn’t personal.

There is zero point in Barnier and Frost meeting. The issues are political not technical. It’s the equivalent of both sides taking the ball into the corner flag and waiting for the whistle to blow.
