General Videogame Thread

The dialogue comment is just plain wrong.

Yes you get 4 or 5 options but which one you choose does effect the way people react to you and has consequences later on in the story and as much as I love Fallout 4 the dialogue options don't really matter.

Shooting is fine and a lot better than most RPG's each weapon feels different.

Empty map? See my screenshot below. That's just Waston district of Night City and there is a tonne of stuff to do. And most of the side missions are excellent.

There is definitely issues with the game like the bugs and graphics and the crafting system is unbalanced and everything to buy in the game like cars and rare crafting materials are super expensive but CDPR can address those issues.

It just seems a lot of people are just jumping on the bandwagon and trying to pick apart the game and criticise it on everything.

I'm really enjoying it so far and probably so are a lot of other people and I know it's going to be improved over time

For me it had a lot of hype but it doesn't quite deliver anything that's really good. Maybe its just RPG's though because I didn't like Fallout 4 either.

It definitely doesn't feel like a masterpiece like Red Dead 2 which does all the simple stuff extremely well.

I always wait for these games to establish themselves. Too many fanboy reviewers and paid for reviews to be able to discern just how good or bad it is. Based on what I've heard so far it is a ground breaking game that resets the genre - I'v heard that so many times, so will wait and see and continue playing The Long Dark for now

Yeah I get what your saying. There is a lot of issues with the game, especially the bugs and graphics which urgently need to be addressed. I'm playing on a Series X so I've not seen lot of issues with that.

I think a lot of rebalancing needs to happen.

The skills tress are over complicated. I spent 40 minutes looking at all the trees trying to work out which was the best path for a netrunner/hacker

The crafting system needs changing as it's either really expensive to buy rare material and even harder to find them.

Clothes are your amour and you can't upgrade them so you just use the best stat ones and you can you look ridiculous.

The amount of weapons you get is almost at borderlands level and even though you can modify them there's no real need as you know in 5 minutes you'll get a better weapon which negates the crafting system.

Think CDPR are trying to make the ultimate action game/RPG but it's not quite there yet.

However after saying all that when it gets stuff right CDPR have absolutely nailed it.

Night City is just astounding. Just to drive or walk around in it is fantastic. It really is a living breathing City.

The writing and voice acting is suberb. It's up there with RDR2, The Witcher 3 and the Mass Effect trilogy for me. You get invested and emotionally attached to the characters and dialogue choices do matter(I'll come back to that later).

The mission structure is excellent. It feels natural and organic and while the main story is good the side missions are brilliant. No filler like say a Unisoft game or fecth quest like drive to point A kill X amount of people drive to point B collect reward. The side missions are interesting and feel unique.

I did a side mission where I had to deliver an item and I thought quick and easy gain some xp. It actually lasted about an hour, took me all round Night City and the pay off was brilliant.

Early on in the game I did a mission 3 times using different dialogue and changing the way I did the mission (hacking, talking and all guns blazing) and each time the outcome was entirely different and the dialogue was different at the end.

When The Witcher 3 was released that had issues with bugs(not as much as Cyberpunk) and performance and quality of life issues which CDPR were quick to address and sort out. I have confidence they will sort this out.

If your on last ten consoles or low to mid range pc then I would say don't buy now and wait until the major issues are sorted.

There's a lot of criticism for this game and it's entirety justified but there also a lot of hate which I feel is way over the top.

Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to give my opinion and hopefull give good advice to people on here as the haters/fanboy wars over this game online is just getting stupid.

Think I'm in the wrong job and should be doing video game reviews and podcasts like @twosips occasionally does!!

Thanks for sharing, mate.

I think it should be pointed out that most of the criticism in this thread (and a lot of it elsewhere) is directed squarely at CDPR for very dubious pre-release behaviour (bordering on fraudulent marketing/advertising) and having put out what is essentially a broken game on last gen (at launch) at all (knowing full well it was in that state and would take time to fix).

Even if their investors and distributer were pressuring them to release for the holiday season, I still think that criticism is more than fair. It is important to keep them accountable, especially given, as you, I, and others have pointed out, this is not the first time they have done this. Though, I think CP’s current issues are much worse than TW3’s at launch, as there are mission/game breaking bugs and crashes galore.

We all hope that CDPR fix the game, but the fact it was released in this state at all, specifically advertised (and developed over many years) for PS4 and XBO, with CDPR taking steps to hide how bad the game runs (or doesn’t run) on the primary launch systems so as to avoid losing pre-order and launch sales (~40% of initial sales were for PS4/XBO), deserves the backlash they are getting.

If the game devs aren’t held accountable, if we all just accept being duped and lied to, they will all adopt this “full price for early access” model. Fallout 76, No Man’s Sky, and Cyberpunk 2077 should not be the new way to make games in so, so many ways.

And we wouldn’t tolerate this sort of behaviour for most other products, so why do we give game devs a pass? And specifically for CDPR?

Would any of us be happy pre-ordering a Tesla Model S, only to pay in full to have it delivered a year later with a 50 hp engine, a shattered windscreen, and faulty ECU that causes it to stall every few hours (or sometimes not start at all), but with a personal promise from Elon Musk that over the next 3-6 months you’ll get the standard 589 hp engine, the windscreen fixed, and an “improved” (but perhaps not entirely fixed) ECU?

Oh, and he’ll throw in a signed blueprint of the vehicle design and a new paint job for free, just to make it up to us!

Of course not.

It’s the other side of fanboying. And that comes from someone that was a big fan of both CDPR and Bethesda until recently.

Edit: By the way, I agree you should be doing reviews. I would watch and subscribe! :-)

Totally agree with you.

This is not good for CDPR and it will be difficult to repair their reputation after this.

I think it was always going to be difficult to optimize a game like this on 7 year old tech and without major sacrifices it was always going to be a struggle and I doubt it'll ever run right on old gen consoles

Microsoft last night announced the console version of Microsoft Flight Sim will only be available on Series X/S as previous hardware cannot run it. CDPR probably should of done the same.

I do feel the investors have had a say in this not only to release it before Christmas but also to realase it on last gen consoles to make the most amount of money. I guess we'll never know.

Apparently the game cost around £130M to make.

Such a shame as CDPR have always been open and honest about making their games right even since The original Witcher PC game and they have always been against microtransactions and DRM licencing issues.

Even if they come out and apologize about this(which I think they will) and try to fix this I don't think it'll be good enough for a lot of people.

Have to agree.

It’s a long [glitchy] road back for them.

When things like this happen in gaming( see Bethesda-Fallout 76, EA Battlefront 2 and any game with ultimate team, Ubisoft MTX in their games) it doesn't make me angry it makes me sad.

You have these huge companies with millions of customers who are waiting for their next product and they have the technology and resources to make amazing games with can take you to other worlds or immerse yourself like playing a knight in medieval times. To help you escape your real life for a few hours and what do they do? Make generic shooters or sports games which are the same as last year but with the new kits and they are riddled with microtransactions.

I always remember a scence in Aliens when Ripley finds out Burke is trying to smuggle alien eggs back to earth and she says:

"I don't know whose worse, the cooperate suits or the aliens. You don't see the aliens fucking each other over for the percentage of the profits"

And that's what big game companies do now.

I absolutely love gaming and it's a huge part of my life and has been for many years(I'm 45) and I'll always have faith that gaming is doing more good than harm but it's getting more difficult these days.

Sometimes I pine for more simpler times like playing on my commodore 64 or switching on Mario 64 for the first open mouthed and saying "This is the future!!"

Couldn’t have said it better.

Anyone playing Fifa 21 Ultimate Team? They had a good game at launch. Then they have solely made it worse and worse with their updates and now it's just like Fifa 20. Slow and frustrating. Why would they ruin a good game?!

I only look at this thread once in a while, have things moved on since Duke nuckem ? And what’s an RPG ? Thinking about getting an Xbox PS5 no idea which is better and at 53 not sure I’d get into again

Role Playing Game, focus on character progression, storytelling, levelling up and in-game tasks such as crafting and building. Huge range within RPG genre though and things like action RPG or J(Japanese)RG are considered separate genres.

If you are unsure about how much you would use it, I would hold off a bit. There are only a handful of games on the newer machines at the moment and most aren't exclusive (even if they are optimised best on the new hardware). When easing of Covid restrictions allow, If you know a mate who has one and is happy to give you a test-drive or somewhere like Game's Belong Arcades (where you can rent time to play on consoles or PCs) when they open back up.

I'd recommend reading up about the features of both too. If you want something for casual entertainment at low cost you could pick up a an Xbox with the monthly game pass subscription or you might be more tempted by PS5's 1st party exclusive titles. Most of the big titles will be on both machines though.

Once you pick up a machine you can save on the cost of the games if you shop around on 2nd market or use online key codes from places like CDkeys.com for downloads instead of buying from official PS or Xbox stores (make sure it is UK or EU version though).

I'm loving Cyberpunk so far. Think I've been really lucky as I haven't had a single crash or game breaking bug in the 10 hours I've played so far. Then again I knew I was always going to love this game as it is everything I want from a game. Cyberpunk setting, RPG, cool upgrades and implants, great writing etc. Sucks other people are having performance issues but hopefully they can sort that with future patches but this looks fantastic on my PC with ray tracing on.

1.04 patch out for Cyberpunk. PC owners getting another few FPS, PS5 owners say it's a lot sharper. PS4 say it's improved many problems but still short of expectations.

FPS for PC users is apparently hugely dependant on CPU. Some Ryzen 2600 owners who've splashed out on a 3080 might be a bit miffed right now.

believe it or not the GPU will be the bottleneck even if it's a 3080 with the 2600 Ryzen, Red dead redemption and Assassins Creed will be the opposite causing a CPU bottleneck.

All that being said the FPS will be stable by dropping a few settings and not go for ultra high settings. Even if PC gamers went out and bought a 3700x it would still be GPU bottleneck.

Weird isn't it, that you can spend £750 on a GPU and in some games that's the weakest part of your system? There should be more furore over how developers aren't optimising their games well enough, if new expensive haedware can't deliver what's the point?

Managed to eventually get in my Xbox X last night properly, Destiny 2 looks beautiful at 60FPS it’s so smooth. Gamepass is well worth the money especially if you do the work rounds to get it very cheap, I’m subbed until August 2022 already! Anyone wants to add me its GrumpyOGUK.

I'll add you in minute mattg75

Edit. I've got game pass till march 2023 [emoji2]

The PC version is a different beast to the ps5 one.
How good a PC do you have to have to enjoy it? My laptop spec is Intel Core i7-10750H Processor, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650. Would that run it well enough to justify getting it, in light of the issues people are having? Or not? I’m guessing it would only be able to play it on heavily reduced settings. When people say the PC version is better, are they playing on the highest settings on ridiculously high end PC’s that most don’t have? Because if so, then making the game so inaccessible is just inexcusable really. How can they spend 7 years making a game that barely anyone can play? It’s infuriating really. And to charge top whack too for a broken product.
