West Brom (h) post-match thread

We need to face the reality that this team is finished, we have to rebuild.

We have the basis of a decent squad, Edison , Walker, Dias, Ake , Stones, Foden, KDB but the rest for me can move on.

Our front 3 are never good enough to challenge for the titles, Jesus particularly , and for me it's time to move on Sterling, he has peaked, sell him now while is value is strong.
If I were Sheikh Mansour I wouldn’t get my wallet out again after spending what the best part of £600m.

Plus in these difficult times your saying get rid of maybe 8 players, won’t happen, manager likely to go first.

We are making it easy for the opposition, they know how to set up and defend against us because we do the same thing every game.

Our build up play is incredibly slow and predictable,we dont get enough players in the box,we very rarely exploit width, and our final ball is piss poor or wasted.

Saying all that.......the 1000000000 passes we made, and the 80% possession we had, combined with enough chances to put that game to bed several times over.......should have been enough to change the outcome and the mood of our fan base.
Shot delivery and placement was terrible last night having looked at the saves made again they were all much easier to make than not.

Time to get a real ruthless finisher preferably two into the side as Kun will no doubt be moving on in the summer.

We have to otherwise we will continue to decline in performance and finishing position.

I for one wouldn't trust anyone in the club with my money. I will go far and say that Dias feels the only signing that's an upgrade and maybe an adequate replacement to the legends that have retired in the last couple of years.
I trusted them to find another Fernandinho - they got rodri
The search for aguero successor remains
The replacement for Zabaleta - Cancelo sigh!
The replacement for Toure - ? Gundo/B. Silva or who
The replacement for Merlin - doesn't exist
And we never had a decent left back. We still don't
I fear KDB may sense some rot and decides not to sign an extension

Agreed and at the very least I hope the powers at Abu Dhabi , particularly the one who signs the cheques is asking some very serious questions.

The money wasted on players in the last 3/4 years is criminal.

KDB is not in a position to be dictating a contract extension and particularly a wage increase.

Our best midfield player this season is Gundo, that may says why we are in mid table and looking so ordinary.

For once our defense looks adequate, the front line, the less said the better, it's fallen off a cliff!

Yeah totally agree, I think we need someone that can work on a tight budget now, and get the best out of the current squad, with maybe 2 or 3 additions.

There’s no way we’re moving on loads of players, maybe 2 or 3, players are lacking confidence imo.
Can we at least start with Mendy. If I managed the team there would be no way he was going on the pitch with that ridiculous hair style.

If he actually contributed anything it would help to offset the fact he looked a complete twat, but he didn’t. Get rid ASAP!

He still remains our best player and let me whisper this quietly our only world class player in the current form that our players are.
He has bailed us out multiple times and he still presents multiple chances to our inadequate forwards. It's not his mistake that we need 10 chances to get our one goal in.

Gray the guy cost £52m and most of time he’s been on the injury table, absolute shocking signing in hindsight.

And for people complaining about the low block and the ultra defensive game that opponents play against us. Do you want them to be accommodating and fall all over us so that sterling can score a tap in and Mahrez some step ins before he scores his one customary goal in 15 days.
Teams tend to defend deep with us. Don't we know that already from the last couple of years.
I for one thought If somebody is getting paid 20 miilion for a year and half a billion dollar budget would have figured out a solution for the deep block and not complain about substitutions and then never make one.

The midfield is a shambles as is team selection and system.

Totally agree, but this is not the moment to be offering new deals and wage increases, the same goes with Sterling.

I would say the state we are in, NOT ONE PLAYER is sure of his long term future, maybe Foden and Dias apart.

The haircut sums him up, all substance but no style or end product.

We are a team of pussies, I would not like to be in the trenches with these guys.

In the end, i'm happy enough with a point, because it was beginning to look like one of those 'just not your night' games where they would knick a goal at the end, or var would give them a stoppage time pen or something.

Sometimes, things just go against you, the own goal from a free kick that was never a foul, multiple missed chances and top top saves that on another night would have gone in. The game itself, out of context, these ones happen.

Again, we are hugely underestimating the effect fans in the stands would have had in that game, the extra pressure it would put on their defence in those last 20 minutes, the bit of belief it would give our forwards. Enough to get that winner. Let's not bullshit ourselves, we have had these games every time we won the league, we found ways to win them and it was marginal. We also had suckerpunch losses too.

The problem is has been happening a few times.

The bigger issue for me is the narrative this creates. We've already rewritten the last season, and a fair few now seem to be going into kickoff with a low expectation, and then watching the game to try confirm it.

We Are slower than we have been, we are less 'frightening'. But we still keep the posession and we still create the chances. What seems to be missing is belief and confidence. You can see it, from half an hour in, players are in despair and disbelief at missing chances as if it is the 90th minute. It almost looks as if they have convinced thenselves the goals aren't coming.

The narrative around pep will start to build too, can't hack it more than 3 years, anywhere else he'd be sacked, and that will feed into the cycle.

We need a big scoring dominant game to shed the weight, and to follow it up with a basic win. Then it might kick a bit of self belief off.

I think pep should be using torres way more, and regularly, because he is the one player currently not bogged down with this mentality. He is new to the team and league, has that fresh naivity but also that pure hope, has confidence and belief in himself, and the hunger to prove himself and justify his big move. And that will produce goals where a currently fragile sterling or mahrez will miss them.
