COVID-19 — Coronavirus

We need to vaccinate 10 times that rate. Hopefully we will when GPs join the fray.
We need another vaccine approved before we can make real progress as we really have a big dependence on the Oxford one in terms of being able to vaccinate all but the top most vulnerable quickly.

Then we will face the issue of because of the negative publicity over the Oxford and its lower protection levels some will no doubt start declining and saying they will wait 'till you get more of the better one'.

Messaging over this will again be essential but every time I hear that about things right now I can only think of it likely to be the first four letters of messaging not the other five.

As I noted yesterday it was only an internet campaign that forced them to release this data as it did seem nobody in England knew the actual numbers. Their overly casual attitude to the importance of raw data has cost us before.

They misled the country with their hospital numbers in the last press conference. They used 4 day old data when their own website had very different numbers already. They showed London had more patients in with Covid than the North West when the press conference claimed the opposite.

Scotland had been reporting on the vaccination numbers since the start and Nicola Sturgeon promised a weekly update every Wednesday the day they started.

Nobody in England seemed to even know.

In a pandemic numbers are one of the most important things you need to know and share with your people. Happily this might now actually happen. But it should not take an internet campaign to have coerced this.
Compared to a few weeks ago we’re in a miles better place. The media thrive on bad news, most people just want balanced news whether good or bad.

Scottish data is sadly not too good today.

Deaths 38 (down 1 on last week)

Cases 689 - also down a bit at 5.9% positive - up from 4.6% last week.

140 in Lothian, 109 Greater Glasgow (usually top every day), 92 Lanarkshire and 91 Ayrshire

But 1031 in hospital - up 35 in one day.

And 49 on ventilators - up 4 and the first rise here too in a while.

So some modestly good news but the hospital numbers and rising positivity is less good.

Let's just presume the 130k vaccinated number doubles this week given that ^

If so we're looking at roughly 250k maybe by the end of the week (more perhaps?) - that doesn't sound loads, but it's still 0.37% of our UK population. That's a lot already! Roughly 1 in 300 people in the UK have now been vaccinated. It's a fair presumption that most of these are some of the most vulnerable too. This is great news! Hopefully this momentum keeps up.
Will the numbers slow right down though, when people have to go for the second jab though. Hope not but it does seem likely.

I agree. Its the main reason I spend so much time sourcing my own data so I can try to keep spin out if it and make up my own mind. Far too many media sources have allegiances that will adapt how they say what they say.

It is impossible for anyone to be entirely unbiased. I struggle at times. But if you have no audience to play to which dictates your future or sales if you do not tell them what they want to hear or read then at least you are ahead a bit in knowing how things really are.

Boris Johnson has said all UK nations have reached a "unanimous agreement" to go ahead with planned Christmas bubble rules.

But he added that people should "exercise a high degree of personal responsibility" if they do spend time with family over the festive period.

It comes after a phone call between Westminster and the devolved nations, which took place amid growing pressure on the government to scrap the easing of rules over Christmas.

Yeah right , i am sure the welsh guy said fine lets do it

It will if this is the only vaccine then available owing to its limited ease of access.

The big uptick will only come when we have something like the Oxford one that is easier to administer.

Scottish vaccination briefing from Dr Nicola Steedman - chief medical officer of Scotland.

1.6 million deaths globally from Covid in first 12 months.

The vaccine is a big turning point - a 'stone of hope' from 'a mountain of despair' she calls it.

What do you base the Welsh guys ( Mark Drakeford) response on?

Nicola Steedman - started hospital workers and care workers last week and care home residents now Will work through society from most vulnerable.

Can report that since last Tuesday18, 644 up to end of Sunday.

Limited by supply and special needs.

We will need your patience. It will take time to vaccinate everyone.

He has a point.

everyone knows the dangers now.

we shouldn't need Boris to police us on this.
Majority of people all the way through have needed to have there hands held and be led.
Fb is full of “am i allowed to do this or that”. An amazing amount of people lack any sort of common sense

Nicola Steedman

It will be difficult to wait your turn but right now limited by just one vaccine. We hope for more soon.
Everyone will be vaccinated as soon as possible.

We need continue - especially over Christmas - to protect ourselves and our loved ones before we can reach a point of safety.

Also need to see IF the vaccine stops transmission as that is not yet known until enough people have had it.

The more we can vaccinate the faster we can return to normal.

18,000 is an amazing start and is the beginning of the end. She concludes.

Nicola Sturgeon 'The safest way to spend Christmas this year is in your own home with your own family. That is my strong recommendation'

Asked if the four nations agreed. She said she made clear to Boris Johnson the point beyond which she would not go.
