Just a theory; if the whole UK tier 4 until vaccinations are very largely underway, what's the point in mass testing anymore? Why not just fallback on hospital and critical care admissions? Surely the testing is superfluous when you're not trying to track it around anymore?

Good choice , i love their songs

Are you doing ok T ?
Yes thanks and currently working fastidiously on our escape tunnel with only a few shovels full left to go, as long as them spanich do not disown us like the rest of the Europeans. The unclean? maybe we are ... but we have our moments.

My mum booked flights to come over on the 22nd. First chance she’s had to meet her first grandchild (8 months old now). Now Austria’s blocked flights from the UK. Just what we don’t need

Me neither.

From the reporting, the data from the half/full was a very small set, and would need more work to give a reasonable data set. I don't know if there has been enough time since for that.
As I posted earlier the woman scientist talking about this inferred they had done more tests and accepted the delay because they were convinced the higher protectivity was real and safe. And implied these tests proved even better than they hoped. No idea if this was true or an actual insider but it was what they said the other day.

Hancock just said tier 3 worked with the old strain to suppress but will not work with the new one as it is too infective so if it starts to spread beyond where it is then those areas will be in tier 4 by the sound of it.

Huh?

Headlines / quotes from November.

'WE NEED MORE' Tier 3 lockdown not enough to stop Covid, warns Chris Whitty, as it emerges SAGE wanted circuit-break three weeks ago

Papers from the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) show the top experts have called for a “more stringent” approach to be implemented, to avoid a third national lockdown being ordered in the New Year.

The last story contains an opinion poll, respondants mostly against more measures. Boris went on to revise Tier 3, but it resembled a lessening of measures, to me - gyms and hairdressers etc.

It's all about public opinion and the press IMHO. Boris has been 'going with the flow'. As a result, they aren't half playing fast and loose with their narrative of how we got here.

I'd say this one will run and run, but I imagine we will go through the whole cycle again fairly soon and no-one will have the time or emotional resources to focus on this episode.

That's such a shame :-( I know how it is when you are longing to see your first grandchild, yet live in different countries. My granddaughter Lilly was born in 2018 so I have seen her, but the longing to hold the new arrival had to wait 6 weeks so it must be even tougher on your Mum :-(

Anyway.

Stay positive people. Thank yourself for whatever efforts you have made so far. We'll need more of the same going forward. Look out for each other, and be proud of it.

And remember, the real villain here is an uncaring, pointless, relentless virus, that unlike us humans, doesn't get tired, or bored, or complacent.

circuit breaker didn’t work in Wales

latest national lockdown didn’t work in London or Kent

national lockdowns in NI and Scotland now after similar messing about

at some point SAGE are going to have to start taking some blame

edit:

it was them who said for months not to wear masks and there was no point shutting airports or adding quarantine for travellers

I missed that earlier.

Thanks, that makes sense - I had wondered why there was no news on the Astra vaccine recently.

Cheshire East for Andyhinch:

Cases 101 - third straight day over 100. Total cases 10, 436. Pop score up 27 to 2717.

Weekly Pop up from 159 to 167. Still steadily rising sadly.

Though I think we know why.
