COVID-19 — Coronavirus

There has been no suggestion that would be the case so I wouldn’t worry about it.
To summarise what I have heard: There is a possibility it will reduce the effectiveness of vaccines although it's unlikely. There have been many variants and the Pfizer vaccine was effective against all. They are checking. Said to take weeks as many tests have to be done

Looking at that official paper on this new strain it estimates that 0.4% of those that get it may die. Are they saying it’s a lot more contagious and a lot less deadly or have they officially revised the death rate overall to 0.4% now?

It says there are around 1000 identified cases, and of those, they know 4 died. That's not a prediction of deaths in the future. For one thing, they would have to correct for the age and other factors that may skew this group. And I wonder if they know for sure all the others are alive and fully recovered today. I imagine many of these cases are ongoing.

They do have enough information to predict increased R0 but only with moderate certainty.

I noticed the BBC reported that the Prof in today's briefing said it was too early to tell if the boom in cases was down to this new virus. And it was Hancock who was talking about it being 'deadly' and 'out of control'.

It's right to take precautions, but I really think we ought to be a careful at this stage before reaching conclusions as to how prevalent and threatening it actually is. If it turns out that this strand was not much different than the others - and it might - then it'd be a disaster if people switched off again. Because there's little that's happened in the SE case numbers so far that doesn't fit what we already assumed about COVID. It's already known to be really dangerous, especially when people don't take care!

It is 70% more contageous but they think no more deadly but more infections will lead to deaths and an overwhelmed nhs ,there is no upside to this situation

It is thought to be able to increase the R by 0.4 on top of the other strain

Let’s just hope the vaccines are not any less effective against it.

You were picking on another poster @xgorton in a similar vein earlier.
Look at hundreds of other posts on this thread - they all fall into a similar category to mine.
The freight ban is because of COVID!!
@Ban-jani espoused who would now vote for the tories in this current guise. I said what was the alternative. Both posts were immediately deleted as it was not an "A" political thread, therefore should it not follow the same standards must follow for all. Not that you don't have a voice Len but that voice if A political it must be appropriated to the correcxt context and forum. Our Riculas has spent an eternity in separating threads of this nature.

That’s Count Riculas, to you.

This is a really serious issue, if France are stopping freight how the fuck do you turn around all them lorries?
They won’t, they’ll just park them on the M20 and close it to other traffic. Lot of european drivers will be struggling to get home for xmas.

That’s what happens when you try and play Billy Big Bollocks and leave everything to the last minute.
I fully get banning travel. The trouble with banning freight movement as well is that will have consequences on both sides of the channel. One of our biggest customers is in France and they’re organising collections from us almost every single day. They’re going to be mightily pissed off with this decision because I doubt there’s another company on the whole of the European mainland that makes some of the shite they buy off us!

The vaccines are based on the March virus it will gradually evolve away from it as we are seeing.

However, there are loads of variants all the vaccines have been shown to be effective against them but they have to check. It was either Patrick Vallance or Whitty who said last week that Porton Down are checking and I suspect many other people are doing likewise.

I don't think anyone knows at the moment because this morning a Dr Susie Hopkins (sp.) was interviewed on Marr show. She is investigating the variant on behalf of PHE and she says they don't know at the moment if the vaccine is affected in any way. Theoretically it could be affected.

I work with people who study protein folding and one amino acid can alter a protein's form. If you remember from school a mutation in Sickle Cell anaemia changes the haemoglobin structure and deforms it so one mutation can have an effect. You don't know until you check. Computer simulation and in vitro tests can be done.

We can of course change the vaccines particularly the mRNA vaccines as we go along and I think this is expected, it's just very annoying that this happens just as we are rolling out the vaccines.

I think most experts have said that it's unlikely the vaccines will be rendered useless because they produce a broad response against more than one site on the spike protein but this is clearly an important aspect to clear up. I don't think we'll know for some days at least.

A Number 10 spokesperson said: "The Prime Minister will chair a COBRA meeting tomorrow to discuss the situation regarding international travel, in particular the steady flow of freight into and out of the UK."
