COVID-19 — Coronavirus

The way in which the tiers are patently not working to contain the spread is exactly what I expected and feared.

Scientist on BBC juat now saying that it is spreading from tier 4 to tier 3 to tier 2 and worrying.

It will as I keep saying.

Tiers just do not work. They are like sieves. We have known this since Wigan in July. Only the same rules for all prevent cheating and cheating of the rules is now as big a factor in spreading the virus as this new mutation.

We need and have always needed full lockdown for the UK. End of story. Every day we dither as always we do on this is making it worse and will mean it has to last longer.

So those saying - but the economy....the economy will be worse if we are in lockdown for weeks longer because we dither on this.

Utterly fed up that this is so obvious and yet politicians ignore the evidence and the science over and over.

This country right now reminds me of Nero when Rome was burning. Whilst that was made up to make him look bad. This situation needs nothing made up unfortunately.

Tier systems doesnt work
Lockdown doesn't work
We are paying the price for being a month behind the pandemic.
Quote simply nothing they do now will avert disaster.
2021 will be another awful shit year and the blame lies with the government of this country.

China anounced they are hopefull to vacinate over 50 million citizens by the lunar new year on feb 12th with the 3 vacines developed there.

That is pracrically our population done in 7 weeks.

Whether they suceed is another thing

Maybe we can help the tourism and health industries by doing vaccine breaks to China once they have finished. Might speed things up a bit.

Sorry to hear this news. But you will all be fine hopefully. You have each other over Christmas which will help.

Would not be surprised if this is the new rapid spreader one because the NW % of cases being it versus the older ones has been shooting up since October and likely well over 25% by now. It was 17% over a week ago.

The members of my family that caught it recently had a similar experience and everyone in the household got it from one another within a week.

That is why this new version is such a problem. But happily no evidence it makes anyone more sick.

In some ways if it spreads this fast we might be at herd immunity in weeks not years. May be the best way to get this over along with the vaccines. As I doubt any government is now going to be able to contain this rampant strain as it is way past the point of that being feasible.

Stay safe, Look after one another.

Thanks Heald Place ;)

Keep the data flowing, it is a great service to us all.

we have a vaccine. The start of the 21-22 season will be absolutely magical.

Result came back positive this morning :(

Had a bad cough and chills since Sunday.

Not a surprise after my wife and son tested positive a week ago.

Just goes to show how important it is for people to play their part on personal responsibility.

I tested negative along with my young daughter when we got the original test done.

We were six days into self-isolation but I just felt off, so relieved to know the score this time around.

It's another ten days now for all of us, until Dec 31.

At least it means three out of the four of us now have it and keeping daughter inside for effectively what will have been 16 days at the end of it, means I don't have to worry about hugging her on Xmas day.

Fucking schools, you won't find anyone more anal than me when it came to doing everything by the book and not seeing anyone for ten months :(
Sorry to hear this. I also tested positive yesterday. Similarly had severe chills and also the loss of taste and smell. As someone who has spent the vast majority of this year shielding (due to bone marrow failure), to catch it anyway is rather galling.

Lockdown is the best hope we have as it leaves zero room for people to cheat the rules that they often perceive t o be politically motivated or unfair. Provided you enforce them properly and do not just say - don't do it again.

Rightly or wrongly that perception has festered and has killed dead the stoical approach of the British people.

Asking people not to do things nicely and sensibly is farcical in a pandemic. The ones who will would anyway without being asked. The ones who will not will sneer and do what they can get away with.

You HAVE to minimise what they can get away with or you are stuffed. Because the percentage who are frustrated enough to try will only increase if you create the absurd patchwork quilt of tiers we have now that I bet about 1% of the nation fully understand what is allowed and not in each.

Simplicity of orders is king in any war.

dithering over making unpopular decisions? They moved London onto Tier 4 24 hours after a scientific paper

A partial telling to put it very mildly indeed.

They failed to act on Christmas when days or even weeks ahead of that paper, the numbers alone showed that the planned relaxation was likely disastrous. Just for instance, an unprecedented joint editorial in BMJ was written and ignored. All without any knowledge on new strains.

They only acted when they absolutely could not avoid it a moment longer.

When they did finally act, they only did it in areas most severely affected right now, ensuring that further spread will occur before another, inevitable wider clampdown. Even you posted that there will be a boxing day tier 4 everywhere. If that's the case, why not announce it now? The contrast with Scotland is telling.

I am sure you are right, but what concerns me is that try as I may I can find no data on the vaccination numbers

Posted just upthread.

BBC just saying on North West news that they have obtained 'new' figures today that there is 17% of the new strain in the NW.

NEW?

Published on here 24 hours ago and already then data days old.

More like 25% I fear by now.

Good old Beeb - always ahead of the curve.

Yes good points but weve had 2 lockdowns and they haven't worked.
We should have adopted the Australian and New Zealand approach.

If China said it was Wednesday tomorrow, I'd check my City calendar.

In a statement, the EU Commission said it was "important to take swift temporary precautionary action" to stop the spread.

But it added: "Flight and train bans should be discontinued given the need to ensure essential travel and avoid supply chain disruptions."

The commissioner for justice, Didier Reynders, said "blanket travel bans should not prevent thousands of EU and UK citizens from returning to their homes."

However, the Commission recommended all its 27 members to discourage non-essential travel to and from the UK.

I agree we should have. It was a very bad mistake. We casually tossed away one of the best protections anyone can have from a pandemic. Being an island.

The Isle of Man has had ZERO deaths for six months and the ones they did have were caused by incomers.

Indeed someone not self isolating was jailed as they took it seriously to enforce and protect.

Action like that works. Pussyfooting around trying to balance ten things on a pinhead and taking too long to decide what to do next does not.

There is a very good reason Neville Shute set On The Beach in Australia.

Or that the village of Eyam is remembered hundreds of years later.

Common denominators swift action and isolation.

Unfortunately we did not see this and it's too late now. And by some irony the world is now isolating us.
