TBF the lead balloon bit was about ring fencing the south east.

If the half dose AZ vaccine is approved we have 8 million doses Jan 1st.

I agree - we should be getting those into arms as fast as humanely possible. Dose 2 timing not critical.
What I was arguing for was a change in vaccine strategy and geographic use of the vaccines. ANyway who cares who said what.

I have my doubts that a vaccine that has been trialed with certain dose regimes will be used in a different way, however I do think that the priority list could be changed to take into account the threat of the variant. You could do it both geographically, and by targeting different age groups.

The herd immunity threshold is a direct function of R0 ( 1 - 1/Ro) and the vaccines are hopefully our most potent weapon against the variant.

You wouldn't specifically target the variant. I would. I haven't thought about how you would best do it but I certainly think some geographic strategy is worth considering.

I don’t understand how so many people are seemingly comfortable with the prospect of living the rest of their lives with the overbearing feeling that you most likely contributed to the death of a loved one. Fuck Christmas, it is nothing but a distraction this year. Stay at home, don’t use the 3 household quota just because we’re allowed to. Use common sense and minimise your contact with family. If that means arguments with family members, so be it. It’s better than going to their funeral. I’m not ranting at anyone on here, just need it off my chest!

Depends how many Christmases you have left. My parents have barely seen their grandchildren all year. Our strategy is isolation in advance of Christmas.

Yeah, if your family is able to do that, that works for you and is a good thing. Too many in my family are not at home, so not able to say with certainty that they’d test negative. My youngest brother is at college every day, my dad is out and about with work, delivering. We can’t do that. My mum and dad have seen my lad maybe two or three times since March, and sadly they won’t be seeing him at Christmas either.

And there's the problem, the virus doesn't hang around waiting for people to come up with ideas on how to target a new strain, it's off and running and we end up effectively chasing our tails. A blanket assault with the vaccines is the best hope of getting control of this pandemic.

I think it's a human condition that many don't believe it will be them or their loved ones that will catch this virus

Exactly. Sick of people on their high horses telling people what they should be doing. Providing the rules are being followed it’s no ones business what people choose to do so stop preaching as you don’t know what people situations are.

There's so much riding on it. If the EMA approve first then so be it, that's still good news for us. I think we're passed the stage where it would seem 'rushed through' and have raised a few eyebrows. If they're completing the most thorough of checks, that's good, it will hopefully give the public and the scientific community much more confidence in it. Only thing is, we need it yesterday.
I agree mate. Obviously, we are not privy to all the data, decision making etc. but it’s important that the Regulators decide soon. Hopefully, they are convinced of the Oxford / AZ vaccine’s safety but if not they had to inform national and possibly global strategies. I’m fairly sure the MHRA and EMA will be working flat out and we will hear something soon.

I wish I felt that way! Exact opposite. I'm sat about every day worrying and thinking that its inevitable that my parents will die inside the next year from the fucker :/

I am just thankful that both my parents and my wifes parents are no longer with us. We would have been tearing our hair out worrying about them and not being able to help them in any way.

Cheers mate. Appreciated. I just can't fucking wait for this to all end. Living in worry is tearing me apart! My 60 year old mum getting made redundant from a retail job and then immediately getting a job in a primary school hasn't exactly helped my constant state of anxiety ffs ha. Convinced she's gonna take it home one day to my overweight, asthmatic, high blood pressure dad. I know im not alone there though. None of us deserve to sit and worry all day without being able to go near our parents and family. It's a truly shite way to live.

Yeah like so many of us, I basically spend most of my day hoping that they're okay. I know that's an incredibly unhealthy way to live, but I just can't help it as we're an exceptionally close family. It's literally underpinning every single thought I have. Usually such a positive person too!

It goes without saying that im sorry they're not with us though still mate.

Know exactly how you feel my parents are both late 80's Dad with very poor health extremely unlikely to be here next Christmas Covid or not. Haven't been in their house since March Mum won't let anyone anywhere near him as she is shitting it.

Tier systems doesnt work
Lockdown doesn't work
We are paying the price for being a month behind the pandemic.
Quote simply nothing they do now will avert disaster.
2021 will be another awful shit year and the blame lies with the government of this country.
Utter bollox.
It wouldn't matter what you did due to the 15%, or so, of the population who are total Covidiots. Those who don't keep their distance, or wear masks in a crowd or in shops and other public spaces, or have friends round to their house to spread it around.
The only problem with the government is not mandating that these fuckers get tazzered on the spot, arrested and taken to an institution where they are infected and stay there till they recover.
Covidiots are living, breathing biohazard fuck whits.

You simply can't ignore the Cummings effect and all the u-turns too. They've been catastrophically bad in destroying trust in the government, and thus the trust in the guidelines. They're as useless as the "covidiots". I'm personally still of the opinion that most of the spread comes from people breaking zero rules and simply working and living like they have to.

In a statement, the EU Commission said it was "important to take swift temporary precautionary action" to stop the spread.

But it added: "Flight and train bans should be discontinued given the need to ensure essential travel and avoid supply chain disruptions."

The commissioner for justice, Didier Reynders, said "blanket travel bans should not prevent thousands of EU and UK citizens from returning to their homes."

However, the Commission recommended all its 27 members to discourage non-essential travel to and from the UK.

Its rather pathetic. There are only two countries in Europe sampling the virus genome to a high level - The UK and Denmark. The two countries that have reported it.
It probably didn't even start here.
