The problem isn't that they proffer opinion to get a reaction; I would be okay with that. It's that they spout downright lies and distortions of the truth to get a reaction. They pretty much say what they want, and when they get called out they feign shock and disgust. The sheer hypocrisy is astounding.

It's often blatantly coordinated, which is another claim they vociferously deny even though there has been so much content on social media which can't be anything other than coordinated (similar/same language, posted pretty much at the same time from numerous accounts). Talk of a WhatsApp group containing the usual suspects must have been close to the mark given the forcefulness of their denial.

There is no real mechanism to regulate them. IPSO are pretty toothless when it comes to the printed media, and far from independent given that they are largely funded by their member organisations. The only real option we have is to not to engage with them, which I know is extremely difficult.

Whichever situation you can think of (Carney/Leeds, Syed’s or Roan’s or Delaney’s or Conn’s or Harris’s outpourings and so on and so on since 2008), what you have posted applies.. and it does so in spades..

Supporters, especially ourselves, should never plumb the depths of ‘ad hominem’ attacks on (I use the word advisedly) ‘journalists’ for the rubbish that they spout. Leave that to the idiots frequenting Twitter or whatever.

However, the people like Carney, Syed, Roan, Delaney, Conn, Harris and so on and so on need to realise the responsibilities that THEY have to present facts and not ridiculous, transparent, vacuous opinion dressed up as fact and solely designed to garner click-bait.

And so too the industry bodies and owners of the organisations these people work for. They really need to take a hard look at themselves and sort this stuff out before someone gets hurt by some Internet barmpot.

As one of The Smiths’ songs put it, ‘Heavy words are so lightly thrown..’ In other words, think before you conjecture. And definitely think before trying to pass off falsehoods as facts as you have been doing ever since The Sheik took over at City..

There's still people prattling on about the 14 players rule, which they've taken completely out of context by my understanding of it.


Can anyone confirm when this rule was brought in? From what I understand, it was brought in ages ago(years ago) and had nothing to do with virus outbreaks. If this is the case, someone needs to put it in a headline for these people to stop mentioning the 14 player rule. Once that argument tumbles, they've very little to stand on. From what I gather, the change was made in the restart last season, where they added a bit that said the U23 squad should be added to the available players, to ensure they could finish the season without any interruptions.

This is a new season and any outbreaks should be handled on a case by case basis, with guidance from medical experts. They made the right call with City, 4 cases became 9 in 48hours. Whether it's staff or players, they are all in the bubble and the virus can spread quite quickly. Potentially from one bubble to another, how aren't people getting this?

Hmmm, I've read some takes on it, that suggests there is one but it was to do with injuries and nothing to do with COVID. Just that they added U23/21 players to the available players after the restart last season. So rather than create a new rule, they just updated an old one, to get the desired effect.

Suppose I should read the PL Handbook myself rather than hoping others will provide the quote.

Edit: Can't find any 14 player rule. So as you said, it was probably a guideline given in a meeting before the season started. The handbook does say the PL board has the authority to postpone any match. So much for all "the rules say this" rants, with many of them being made by journalists, which doesn't help either.

The Premier League board will always make the final decision on whether or not to postpone games, but guidance for the 2020-21 season stated that clubs should play games if they have at least 14 players fit and available. Of course, in a situation where there is a COVID-19 outbreak and you aren’t sure how much it has spread through a group of players and staff, it is better to be overcautious and postpone games rather than risk worsening the situation.


All it takes is a few more outbreak to really see things spiral out of control.
