I’m in a similar position regarding my daughter. She’s due to go back on Thursday but I’m pretty reluctant to send her in. Wouldn’t surprise me if there is a government U-turn before then anyway.
Think brighton council will just be the start. Can see a lot of councils announcing primary schools will stay closed over the next few hours/days

On a side note, My wife belives rightly or wrongly that if the kids are to be tested in schools she will be expected to be part of the team to do this. Now given that 2 months ago we both went to a testing centre where testing kits we being passed through a small gap through a window at the end of handling tongs and whiteboard instructions rather than talking. i am keen to know what protective measures will be put in place to ensure her safety.
Similar for my missus, she’s a teaching assistant and can see herself being expected to assist. I’ve told her to refuse.

We don’t talk much about the rest of the world but I see cases and deaths are both hammering away at a high across the world.

Yes, basically, if you are in a tier 4 area then Primary Schools are shut as it's too dangerous for them to open. The exception of course is if you live in a tier 4 area in which case it's safe and they are fine to open.

Tier 4 area Barking and Dagenham (where primaries will be closed) has a rolling 7 day average infection rate of over 1300 per 100k. Salford, also tier 4 and where primaries will be open, is around about 300 per 100k. So, as I am sure you are aware, it’s a little bit more complicated than you make out.

He was never going to do a u turn on a chat show. You need the whole proper presentation with all the talking heads waffling on and journalists asking crap questions to make any dramatic changes.

8PM U turn then?

Concur. Part of the problem is that society has expected too much from schools and teachers in the last 50 years: surrogate parents, mental health experts, nutritionists. Teachers and assistants should be expected to educate not run health tests.

It’s not just about cases. Cases are just one area to look at. The biggest concern is hospital and ventilator capacity, which Greater Manchester has been struggling with even since October when case numbers were very low.

But as soon as the new variant takes off in our area, what happens then?

This will be a similar situation to March where we didn’t get in early enough with decisions regarding locking down; once it takes off it’ll rocket, and we’re already at or almost at capacity in hospitals.

Hospital capacity also has knock-on ramifications for non-covid hospitalisation. If you need a hospital bed or ventilator for other illnesses, and they’re not available, excess deaths away from covid will also surge.

I'm in CHESHIRE which is tier 4 I think, but our head emailed yesterday saying nothings changed as of yet the children go back on Tuesday. I think it's pretty simple keep them off but make up the time in the summer holidays, regardless after last year the summer break should only be two weeks tops this year but I'm sure the teachers union will have something to say about that, even though teachers have plenty of time off already.

For me figures don't matter, as a parent I'm concerned as I feel my son would not be safe in school at the moment. Sage, the largest teachers union, teachers and various councils feel the same.

Until this second wave is brought under control schools should not be open in my opinion

School holidays are time off from teaching, but the job is much more than just standing in front of kids during term time.

With the Summer exams three weeks later than usual but results day being only one week later, a lot of teachers will need to be marking exams in the early part of the Summer holidays.

my 5 year old is due back at school tomorrow and we are based in the south east about 20 mins from Brighton. Absolutely no chance am I sending him in tomorrow do not give a fuck about fines or penalty’s my families safety is far more important at this time. Really frustrated the government have not made the decision for us as I think anyone with a sane mind can see opening primary schools is bonkers. I really feel for the teachers

To put some context to this position, at present if a child complains about an ear being sore due to the waering of an ear ring. The school is clear that the staff are not allowed to remove the ear ring. But suddenly they are being expected to undertake Covid tests.

I sympathise.

Johnson has u-turned how many times now?

Can't believe he's saying send your kids to school today, given how many times he's been shown up. This one would be unforgivable.

Our son is due back in primary school tomorrow and it will be interesting.at the moment we're happy to send him in but honestly I'm expecting him to go in for a week only.

As the crisis started in March, it was clear that many people kept their children off as they were worried about cases. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there's kids off tomorrow. Events are now out of the Government's hands. If people are worried, the schools will become hybrid again. I think it will be more pronounced in the south. Parents will decide if the schools will close now, and nothing has been learned since March.

It's an absolute shambles isn't it. The messaging is all over the show with lots of caveats and non-committal words.
