The message of the day if you live in GM is the North West is in trouble and GM is sharing in the rise but so far to a much lesser extent than many other places - particularly Merseyside and Cheshire.

The fact GM has been in some kind of lockdown since July may well be the best news it has right now given the superspreading variant and how it is ravaging all it touches and seemingly putting even healthy young people on ventilators.

London is close to meltdown in the NHS as the poster above reports. Cheshire are having to send patients to GM as they have no icu space. Lots of NHS deaths occurring in East Lancashire. But so far GM is coping better than you would expect

By punishing GM to thank Merseyside the government may just have achieved the exact opposite of the aim. Which seems rather in keeping. And should be called out by those it has hurt.

A way to go yet and we have no idea if this lockdown will be strong enough but I said before Christmas our high tier status long term could be our salvation in January and February and - whilst things can change yet - this may be one prediction I am very happy came true.

Btw on the England hospital deaths data earlier today 4 January had the highest ever single day add on with 252 added. Taking that day after just 48 hours to a total of 317. Incidentally only 27 of those 252 were in the NW.

A two day total over 300 has not happened since the 22 April - about 2 weeks AFTER the peak of the first wave.

Let us hope that means we are only two weeks from the peak of this one too.

Which is very plausible from the data and the time it would take for lockdown to work.

But I think it is all too likely now we will see over 500 a day deaths in England hospitals alone before we start coming down. We already have a run of about 7 totals over 400 for most of the week after Christmas.

Current totals for the tragic Christmas three days is 330 Christmas Eve, 394 Christmas Day and 411 Boxing Day.

New Years Eve is 410 and New Years Day (after just 5 days) is 394.

Awful toll.

Oh and yesterday 5 Jan has a one day total of 71 on that day. This is the highest first day total since 1 May.

You sound like you need a hug fella.
Aaah, the genus of a loser, turns into a piss taker.

Pity you didn’t evolve into something with a grain of intelligence or a soupçon humility.

After all, I was the one trying to get them to vaccinate as many people as possible quickly whilst you defended PHE in their bureaucratic approach. And now that’s been dropped.

We are going to need a more severe lockdown than the current one that’s being implemented.
nobody's fucking doing anything. It's too late for London, that's the Government taking the piss with regional politics for 2 months has now cost them dearly in their golden child. It's tragic but you can't turn that around now, the lag is going to hit big there now, you can only protect those who haven't got it and the rest of the country by maintaining these restrictions for the longer term.

We're heading for that darkest of days and maybe it'll be the day of realisation for those who've taken the piss. We can only hope we come out of this, somehow, a better society.

I bloody don't. Fell on my way to work this morning (just a few bruises) and then again on the way home (smacked my head on the pavement). Felt dizzy like I never have before but it's lessening now.
Oldham council.....sort the bloody pavements out when there is snow and ice!!!!! :-(
are you ok? did you bump your head?

So what’s the scenario when hospitals likely reach the overwhelmed’ stage. Will they refuse to send ambulances out ? Will they deny entry to people getting in ?
What is the back up plan.

I suspect some half-hearted attempt to use the Nightingales, army maybe on the streets to enforce the lockdown and lots of people dying at home or on gurneys.

I know they're turning people away at some hospitals in the Netherlands (know someone who works in one)... I know that's a different country, but still not an unlikely scenario here I guess. Utterly depressing.

I fear this will happen. And with everyone having camera phones it could get very ugly indeed.

there is no plan B, i cant begin to imagine someone going down with this and they cant get ventilated, that must be the worse nightmare,i was in A&E not to long ago and people rolling up struggling to breath its scary,,its going to be a case of fingers crossed its not us, thats all we can hope for

he word histrionic means “dramatic or theatrical.

"Causing histrionics" just does not work

Stop faffing around, get as much of the vaccine out there, get everyone capable of giving a jab on the job, open 24/7 if supplies are there. Get people who want to take a chance on the vaccine to sign a non litigation agreement. Those that won't sign are entitled to wait as long as they are happy to do so. I'm quite sure most of the vulnerable population would take a chance, politicians and bureaucrats are messing with peoples lives, just do it.

how far are we off the peek now it cant be far as were two weeks on from xmas, i know its not a science but they must have some sort of estimated date.1 in 50 has been said at where we are at with infected so will this settle at some point to around 1 in 8 for example then begin to ease off with the lockdown like the last time or is it simply going to run rife until the vax kicks

Listening to the amount of traffic going past our house just now compared to first lockdown, and the fact when I took the dog out yesterday and saw 4 wessex power vans parked outside a sub station with all occupants stood next to each other, no masks, no social distancing, happily blethering with each other, I sadly suspect your last line will be accurate
