I had a call from my boss in Germany today and apart from business we spoke about the vaccination process in our respective countries. He was scathing about the German roll out and he expects to get his first shot no earlier than the last quarter of this year (he is 50).

There is talk of Merkel being in talks with Russia to possibly obtain the Sputnik V vaccine and he said there is no fucking way he or his family would have that (or a Chinese one).

Our numbers will look unbelievable compared to theirs by the end of next week.
Surely the EU medicines agency just needs to pull it's finger out and approve the O-AZ jab and get access to 400m vaccines being manufactured in Europe for them? That would be 75m vaccine doses for Germany alone.
Not all at once of course but there you go.

Compared to getting to at least 325k/day as needed to hit his target.

He said specifically on Monday that they had 500k AZ and 500k Pfizer ready to use. They've used 200k in 3 days.
We're not looking too shaky considering the roll out is only three and a half weeks in.

I've had calls with colleagues in France, Italy and Holland this week and none of them are anywhere near ready to vaccinate large volumes of people.....my Italian colleague said they would be lucky to have everyone vaccinated by end of 2022!!

But when are the next batch due, no point ramping up now and having to stop. Just need to be ready for when the constant supply is there to roll out as fast as it arrives.
If we get to point its stock piling on shelves thats the time to start asking questions.

Had a walk near the airport today.
Everything was quiet (understandably).
Just felt so empty and sad.
I'm not sure the world will ever recover from this.
It's a tragedy that seems will never ever end.

Things will improve, Matt. Embrace the tranquility while it lasts. It's only a few months until the spring and better days.

Since Christmas Day the equivalent of 20 acute hospitals have been filled with COVID patients.

There are now 50% more patients with the disease in hospital than there were at the peak of the first wave last spring.

Hospitals are now opening up surge capacity, expanding critical care into other areas. But staff are the limiting factor.

If admissions continue to rise then quality of care will be affected.

Daily briefing

Drugs typically used to treat rheumatoid arthritis are now set to be given to COVID patients in intensive care with the hope they could save hundreds of lives.

Results from a government-funded clinical trial, published on Thursday, showed using the drugs reduced the relative risk of death by 24%, when administered to patients within 24 hours of entering intensive care.

It was revealed that tocilizumab and sarilumab can also reduce the time spent in hospital by up to 10 days for COVID patients.

Still nothing for my 86 year old mum in Poynton with asthma and heart medication. I'm surprised she's heard fuck all still.
