2m is a largely meaningless number anyway, its nowhere near large enough to protect you from airborne droplets. It was just plucked out of the air as an achievable distance that people could/would follow.

If they're 1.5m apart and all wearing masks the difference isn't going to be significant.

This is from the government document reviewing distances.

Some countries similar to the UK have recommended distances below 2m when prevalence has fallen and with other mitigations in place. France, Italy and Singapore recommend 1 metre, South Korea recommends 1-2 metres, and Germany, Australia and the Netherlands recommend 1.5 metres. Denmark and New Zealand have reduced their recommended distance from 2 metres to 1 metres with mitigations.

So yeah, they're all fucked then! Grouping vulnerable people like that together in a room sat about seems like a really bad idea.

There’s an update on vaccines today

will it be daily from now on or has that not started get

was reading that average age in the ICU is around 60, while deaths is 80 plus

so deaths may drop off massively after the first lot of vaccinations, ICU pressure will still be there till all over 50’s are done

the highest age group admission to ICU is 65-74. I think some of the pressure will be taken off once all over 60’s are done so we should see some easing of pressure on hospitals by about April time I would say. The vast majority of the hospital non ICU cases are over 85’s.

Just looking online and there are flights to Tenerife on Ryan Air from Manchester this week for £19.99. It’s like there’s another world out there. Who is travelling on these sort of flights and why?

I can’t get my head around it. I thought maybe flights were going out to pick people up but didn’t think you would be able to book on one. Virgin were flying to Barbados this morning.

Well there's not much choice. They all have to be monitored for 15 minutes post-jab and if you want 2m+ distances then it would decimate the speed we can vaccinate at and they'll die before getting it.

Im sure they will be smart about the seating order so that they spend as little time as possible close to each other, and anyway the age groups getting vaccinated now are all pretty safe. I took my 87 y/o grandfather to get his vaccine on NYD and I dont think anyone in the queue had been out of their houses for 10 months. It was probably the safest crowd he could possibly have been in.

Good advice on the recovery, not Covid related but an engineer friend of mine had a colleague who was off work for a few weeks with a virus a few years ago. He was an avid runner, he went back to work and on the first day went for a jog, he got back to the workshop feeling unwell, collapsed and died in front of his colleagues. The virus had weakened his heart and he had apparently been told to take it easy by his doctor but he was obsessed with keeping fit, a salutary lesson.
Blimey. There before the grace of God go I. Apparent full recovery for me and fit as ever most of year with loads of running etc. But who knows if anything is lingering. Hopefully others read this and take heed.

I was really bad in Sept & Oct but with a negative test. For 2 weeks I literally couldn't walk beyond the garden gate (so an enforced isolation) due to lack of breath. Constant coughing, night sweats that were truly terrifying as I'd wake up from nightmares that I was drowning only to find that I pretty much was (went through a lot of bedding :( ), full body shivering fits where I had to try and not bite my own tongue off. Headaches but no loss of taste or smell. I lost a lot of weight myself which I'm trying to deliberately keep off now.

Since the test was negative the lad had to go back to work at a food warehouse, luckily the wife never showed any symptoms. I managed to get out in the 3rd week but only for driving the wife to the supermarket where I'd sit and wait for her as I couldn't have managed a walk around the aisles. By the 4th week I joined her but I was knackered by the time I got home. It was 6 or 7 weeks before the dogs got a walk and they were very short ones at that.

Heavy anti-biotics eventually helped and I still don't know if it was Covid or not. No one should take 'breathing difficulties' lightly, I still don't feel 100% back to how I was in the Summer.
Very bad pal, I was rough but not on that scale, I'm sure in future we will find some people are naturally immune to the virus and others, like you, are really susceptible to it. I have high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, under active thyroid, heart arrhythmia, stomach ulcers and high cholesterol but I'm honestly quite fit and active!! I was so worried with my underlying conditions but got away with it really, I really thought around day seven I was deteriorating and my time was up but improved gradually and the worst was over after 16 days.

Nobody as Tenerife and Spain have banned all travel from the UK. The UK have banned foreign travel except for essential reasons. I have older friends out there who own their own apartment. They went out in December as they always do and normally stay until February. They may stay longer as after having to pay £150 for a covid test to get there they have to do the same to return. It's not really the break they are used to though. Masks worn everywhere even outside, curfew from 10-6 and hardly any bars open but they have internet and British TV in their apartment and can sunbathe without a mask so I guess they may as well be there than sitting cooped up here.

No one as the Canarian government has banned all UK citizens from entering their country.
Ryanair are running these flights so they don't have to reimburse customers who had already booked on them but are now not allowed to fly during the lockdown .

Another loophole exploited by O'Leary

so why are Ryan Air flying out there and why can I book a flight?

Ditto Virgin Atlantic, I can book a trip to Antigua going this Saturday.

I take it Spanish citizens are allowed to fly in?

I hope I'm not especially susceptible to anything :(

I'm actually (usually) fit and healthy myself with my only complaint being inherited cervical spondylosis which seems to affect me less nowadays then 20 years ago (not sure how that works). The only time before last Sept that I've been genuinely ill was 2 successive winters when I had the flu 10 years and more ago. I'm coming up to 60 so besides increasingly creaky knees I was hoping to go a few more years yet, this Covid lark has me seriously worried though. Certainly more worried then half the idiots I see in the supermarkets.

Ask them but you'll find unless you are a business traveller or your journey is essential you can't travel. They may be running them to take residents home which is allowed.

A friend of the family's mother this weekend was dying in hospital, she was only allowed two people in to see her, so her daughters had been going, the word came through she was going to die within the next few hours, so her son went to the hospital to say his goodbyes. The guy on the door would not let him in saying the rules are the rules unfortunately, two people only. The lad explained all he wanted to do was say goodbye, the lad on the door ushered him in for 5 mins, which he didnt have to do. Its so sad that many have not had this opportunity to do this, fair play to the lad on the door showing some humanity.

Hopefully you're not susceptible but time will tell, hoping you can celebrate your 60th with family and friends, it's not old these days and "creaky knees" is kind of a badge of honour as a reward for keeping fit, so many of my friends that played football or other sports are suffering from knee problems, I wear a knee brace when playing golf, was sceptical that a stretchy bandage would work but it really does.

Thank you mate. Good to know, as I run fairly often. Try and do anywhere between 2 and 5 miles maybe 4 times per week. Not huge distances of course but enough to keep me healthy and ticking over - and as you mention it then yeah I'd say my chest is a bit tight feeling at times right now. Might be psychological, who knows, but I'll 100% take your advice.
Just take it easy pal. Get well soon.

Interesting, no significant excess mortality in England in Week 52 - it should be noted that week 52 was 21 to 27 Dec, before the shit hit the fan.
