It was total insanity bordering on criminal negligence what we did here. We actually as good as did nothing and we had advance warning what was happening as we watched it rampage through Europe. In spite of this we were letting people from all the infected countries pour in and go on their merry way unchecked. Unbelievable.

We're still letting people in from Brazil with the new more deadly variant.

It's being widely reported that the government are aiming for 500k a day plus next week. The vaccination roll out is a success story at last.

Edit: I've just read a bizarre article in the Guardian which reports that the Lower Saxony region of Germany (where cases are extremely high) has decided that due to privacy laws they can't look at people's medical records in order to write to over 80s to invite them for a jab. Instead they are using partial postal records and guessing based on peoples first names.

WTAF???
Guessing based on people’s first name. Love it. So if you are called the German equivalent of Winifred or Mabel you get an invite.

Its not more deadly, just looks like it may be a bit more resistant to antiodies and allow more reinfection but nothing proven from what ive seen.

More resistant to antibodies is going to make it kill more people and be more deadly.

Which is entirely besides the point, the point was that the government is still not taking quick action, it's still given almost a week for people to travel to the UK from a country experiencing a new strain of the virus that could prove worse.

On the rate of mutation

A typical SARS-CoV-2 virus accumulates only two single-letter mutations per month in its genome — a rate of change about half that of influenza and one-quarter that of HIV

Exactly. It seems they have the same problem we would have here as old fashioned first names are back in fashion so presumably loads of 16 year olds will be invited to be vaccinated.

the idea its resistent isn't proven though. from our own studies 0.6% re infection rate is now known. so the fact that 1 person got reinfected by this in brazil is nothing to be worried about just yet.

Not sure what you mean by quick acton, we blocked Travel from south America/Cape Verde and Portugal over it. only people that can travel are UK residents coming home and being told to isolate for 10 days when they do. And we did that before any solid info was out, cant get much quicker than that.

could there be stricter rules on the isolation yep. should be block our won citizens from coming home? personally id say no a this point.

Yes. I thought that when I was thinking of old people’s names. My grandparents names, Wilfred, Doris, Arthur and Florence are all quite popular again.

It's 10% higher than yesterday, that's not good, given we are all in "lockdown".

I agree. The figures look really bad. I’m seeing posts saying basically it’s a positive sign, but the numbers are ridiculously high still.

50+ thousand infections and it’s seen as better....

I wish had not bothered with this as I have now reposted about 10 times and nobody has even noticed despite my saying this lunch time why I was going to be doing this. And updating EVERY time a nation reported new data so the latest post was totally up to date when I posted it.

Not going to bother doing this again as it is time consuming and if people just read a post at the very start and ignore the rest after it then it is meaningless trying to be up to date.

The four nations report at different times in the day so I was updating it every time one did so it was always right at THAT point of the day.
