Fernandinho signs one year contract extension (Pg 91)

He was brilliant again the other night . I made a point to my young lad how he uses his body to shield the ball whilst still making an accurate pass, hopefully a tiny bit sinks in.
I’d keep him, the way we are operating at the moment he doesn’t have to do too much running even when defending.

It's been discussed in this thread (same with Aguero and De Bruyne contracts) that there's a possibility this is all one big wage cutting exercise related to being able to bring in Messi.

Only assuming the above is true, could that possibly mean Fernandinho's future is tied into Messi? As in, the club are waiting on the Barcelona board elections and looking to gauge Messi's reaction before making the final call? So if Messi has a change of heart then the club will be likely to keep Fernandinho?
 
Bring Messi in would be a mistake! We should extend Ferna's contract for 1 more year as we need him to pass the torch on. Rodri is a different player to Ferna and we need someone like Ferna to replace him and currently we dont have anyone

Whoever comes in needs 1 year to get used to the Premier League. The only way for him to leave and us bringing someone in is if that person is already from the premier league or championship

But I believe Ferna still has one year in him.

From an on the pitch point of view it maybe a mistake, but if Messi does come I can't help feel it's more of the potential of money he'd bring in. I think about how many people from around the world would tune in to City games just out of curiosity. He's a cash cow. There could be a huge number of young kids out there becoming City fans from South America to Asia and where ever else. It could boost our sponsorship and money for the future.
Fern, I love him and what he's done for us, but we need to move on at some point Messi or no Messi. Now's probably the best time.

Not sure that is the case anymore, he is 34 and has faded this season for whatever reason.

If he came to us next season and ripped the Premier league apart, you may well be right, but it's a big if.

If he comes, he would be on a huge contract whatever anyone says about sponsorship and that could cause problems in the dressing room and that's the last thing we want.

The last month has shown the spirit is very high, the players have come together and we look a very happy camp.
 
With great respect I would say no because I think we need to look to the future. It's evident he's past his peak in the biggest games. That said he's still class, just not the absolute spider that he has been. I expect to see Luiz or Zakaria replace him.

The same mistake repeated à la mode Rodney! How many Charlies would be waiting to give Messi what some knob commentators suggest is a 'Welcome to English football' when they've been chopped and turfed out of the season.
 
One more year. You can already see the effect hes had in this team starting in the middle last couple of months. I'd be much more open to him staying than Sergio unfortunately.

Gonna be a hell of a lot of statues outside the Etihad. I agree on the contract extension though, feels like this is the right time to be his last year, especially if we can send him off with a few trophies.
 
I’d only entertain keeping him one more year if he understands clearly that we are buying a younger replacement and he is 3rd choice DM behind Rodri and the new guy. And that means starting no more than 4 or 5 league games all year barring a bunch of injuries. If that’s how he wants to spend his final year(s) then fine, I’d let him. But I expect him to decide that’s not for him. It’s a good time to leave. What a legend.
 
Difficult one, it appears he his loved around the club and he no doubt doesn't want to uproot his family but he will be on big wages and we do have to be a bit ruthless on the business side. Yet another legend going out behind closed doors is very sad, at this rate our pre season next year will just be testimonials.

We don't have the squad space for that unfortunately. If we can find a good long-term replacement for him. We have to let him go.
