Schools are operating as normally? That surprises me as I read in another post that they were hoping to get kids back to school after Easter. If they are still open as normal, then it's madness.
Not normally but the gov has widened what is a key worker hence why this lockdown is nothing like the march one

They’re not fully open but they are certainly busier than they ought to be if we’re genuine about driving numbers down. The guidance on what constitutes a key worker looks like it was written by the virus itself. Let’s get as many people as possible to mingle. Perfect.

If it makes a few people stop acting like idiots and holding parties as if nothing was happening then I am very happy he did. The scientists at the briefing made clear it was early tentative data.

There are good reasons that there are doctors AND politicians at every briefing They have two different jobs to do on that podium.

The headline message from Boris needed to be stark to impact on the minds of fools.

Exactly
The acceptable risk is apparently no longer acceptable.
They’ve got opposition in parliament.
I can’t see civil unrest occurring this summer if they try and do what it looks like they are going to do.
There’s no way the younger half of the population will accept being locked up for another summer

watch this one of the best speeches in parliament on the lockdown and who it really impacts

According to the Telegraph the target of vaccinating all the most vulnerable by mid Feb is now under threat as about half a million fewer doses of vaccine are now coming next week than scheduled

The US one is modifying its plant in Belgium and so all supplies to Europe are being cut over a week or two whilst that happens.

And the Oxford one now is also having to provide smaller numbers than planned.

It is hoped these are only short term slow downs but with only 3 weeks to target it may be end of February not mid February before we reach that target - though the government have not given up.

I guess the weather is a factor too. February can see areas snowed in for days some years.

Just reading an article where it had Best/Medium/worse case scenario. The best case scenario paints a picture of a full loosening of restrictions in March leading to 30,000 hospital admissions in April/May and June so not likely. This is coming from someone who sits on the government modelling advisory group. He is talking about it being more likely to be May before we see the relaxation of rules that would perhaps lead to a better situation. However a loosening of outdoor activities should be possible, just not indoor. Talk of countries only allowing people in who have either tested negative or have had the vaccine.

I personally think that if the vaccination continues to go well and there are no setbacks with effectiveness or new variants then schools will be open after Easter (maybe primary first) but not before. We will go back into new Tier systems where they perhaps allow more outdoor contact and it will be June onwards before we see people at sporting events/outdoor festivals etc. There will be no overseas holidays before June and no pubs etc before then either. I hope I am wrong as it seems a long time away.

Time will tell.
I know pubs are unimportant in the bigger picture, though they are vital to a large number of folks mental well-being, and June seems a long way away. I hope we're wrong.

If we're only half a million short of the target in the end at least that's not too bad. We've now seen we can give out that basically in one day, so its easily done in terms of catching up. If we were getting 5 million fewer doses I'd be more concerned.

My friend in her late 80s finally got her first jab at the Etihad complex yesterday. She says it was a very easy thing apart from what was a very long walk inside for someone with her health conditions. She had to go by a hastily summoned taxi with no mask because there was so much traffic (in a lockdown!) on Hyde Road that her nephew who was driving her there got stuck and could not reach her in time.

It went smoothly once there. She was given the Oxford vaccine. Her only side effect last night was a mild headache but after all that stress that likely had nothing to do with the vaccine.

She has to wait until April now for her second dose, of course.

Pfizer’s problems were documented, but talk in the EU now that AstraZeneca can only supply 40% of its orders in the first quarter, and it hasn’t even been approved. Reckon there are going to be problems in Feb/Mar for everyone, including the U.K., until the taps are turned back on in the second quarter. Just hope that everyone getting the first shot can actually get the second.

Some really encouraging medical breakthroughs are happening recently.

To quickly summarise the above article,
In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, multi-center study, colchicine (well known NSAID) reduced:

a) hospitalizations by 25%
b) mechanical ventilation by 50%
c) deaths by 44%.

I truly believe with the vaccines, all the new medical treatment that are on offer and people in general being more careful by the summer we will be back to a semi normal state.

I’ve heard the Johnson and Johnson vaccine is due to be approved within the next few weeks, this is a one dose vaccine so we will be cooking on gas before long and within the month we will be getting lots of good news!

Just read too that it was apparently a part of the UK Recovery trial too which is great news, as that means we're aware of it and will use it if we think it works!

Edit - the more I read about this the more excited I am! Seems a genuine big deal! The article in this is very encouraging.

Hyde Rd is shut I believe. Flooding plus roadworks.

just completely lost it in a supermarket type shop, not the widest of gaps between the aisle and we would normally go at around 7pm but we were waiting for our cheques to clear ;) so went just now.

thankfully not busy walked up the first aisle no problem, turn to go down the second and two couples no masks standing by each freeze with no gap for me to get through, as they happily chat away to each other. So i wait and wait and wait and wait and wait, by now i can feel my temper building. One of the blokes see's me and say's 'sorry mate'. I am now at boiling point ' no worries mate you carry on chatting who gives a shit about a pandemic anyway'. It than kicks of abit into a slanging match me against 4 lol. I was getting ready for it to turn nasty with punches being thrown i really was seeing red.

Anyway they move on and i stay behind them doing my shopping, i an getting sick and tired of so many knobheads around here just not following guidelines. I know i was in the wrong for kicking off but its been nearly year of people behaving like knobheads. Why were they allowed in without masks ? all 4 couldnt be asthmatic. But why complete block the aisle, without a thought for anyone as long as they can have a chat

and breath and calm downnnnnnnnnnn !!!

There are going to be several tough decisions to be taken on who gets the more limited stocks coming weeks.

Many competing claims are coming for it already. And deciding how we allocate to save most lives is an unenviable lottery,

I have resigned myself to not seeing a letter from 'Matt' until March at the earliest now.

Why keep going on about Norway! With due respect it’s nothing like the UK. If we did all those things we could still have problems.... high rise flats ... poor housing ... big cities. Granted we have been a bit late in some things, but for God sake stop carping.

Yes, it is only right we compare the UK to other countries that show Tory govt in a positive light. We should not compare with the Asian countries who have higher levels oglf poverty, comparable population density etc.. Oh, leave poor Boris alone. He's tried.

Anyway, probably the wrong thread for this so I won't say any more. :)

Are asthmatic people there exempt from wearing masks? Over here there are no exemptions. Wear a mask or you don't get in anywhere. Not that it's made our Covid figures any better though!
