The false nine position really does confuse defences as they don’t know who to mark.. there’s not another team in the League who can play with so much fluidity in that position. It’s great to watch

But BFS was ahead of his time y'know
He was the originator of players bringing their own pillows when staying away from home and having dossiers on players at his new club

You watch the way Cheltenham play under their young manager and then witness dinosaurs like Allardyce, Bruce and Pullis given jobs and you then understand why football hasn't progressed
To me football is an art form. At it's best it makes the world better. Allardyce is and always will be in the camp of ruining the beautiful game, by snuffing out artistry, so, naturally I hate his approach.. I'm not saying it should be all namby pamby, he kicked me, soft as shite, roll for a mile Nancy boys, oh my hair my hair. I like the aggression too. His, how can I stop football ways are not for me. So when I see his team's getting pummelled, I rejoice for the game itself. You're right about progression and as long as these types get called in to make the day worse, it won't progress

Excellent performance tonight from City and I was delighted to see Big Sam, The Dinosaurs Dinosaur, Allardyce is still sprinkling his unmagic dust. Everywhere the **** goes, death and pestilence are waiting. Every year or so they open his crypt as some idiot thinks, we are right in the shite, how could we possibly make it worse? Sam trots up and shows them how. After he gets sacked and 're embalmed, another club pops up to sign on for a fate worse than a fate worse than death. He must be in treble figures of clubs beguiled by his hype and thrown off a cliff. Once he gets sacked tomorrow, I'm convinced he will end up at Celtic and that will be my signal to walk the earth. But, apart from that ****, you're looking tasty.
Careful, the way you describe him he will be a shoe in to replace Johnson.

Makes me wonder how Halaand would fit in to this brand of football?
It's a good question. Haaland is fantastic but perhaps Mbappe would be a better fit because he is more versatile. Let's hope we get the chance to watch one of them next season. I also wondered last night if we are more fluid without KDB. Mind you I felt guilty for even thinking it!

It was good management by Pep to get Laporte on to the pitch, I think as much as letting them play as back 3 it was also trying to build his confidence as it can’t be easy for him to know he’s dropped down the pecking order, and who knows when we might next pick up an injury or suspension at the back.

Funny really how Pep has pretty much stumbled across this new formation, can’t remember off hand which game was the first in this run with the false 9 (was it scum in the semi?), but the way last night that both the full backs were in the middle with Rodders, and we effectively had a roaming front 5 was madness - was saying to my lad it was pretty much a 2-3-5 of which I’ve never seen the like.

My old adversary Gundo playing like a man possessed and the closest to looking like the player we originally signed since he arrived, losing some timber through covid hasn’t done him any harm!

And even FFS looked a better player when he was allowed to roam, although I’m not getting carried away with him as it’ll be a miracle on a par with nothing I’ve ever seen if Pep can get a regular tune out of him, lol.
Pep played the false 9 formation frequently at Barca. It was the role Messi specialised in. The fullbacks moving to midfield was common at Bayern where Phil Lahm became one of the best players in the world.
At City he seems to be refining what he did at Barca and Bayern and achieving even greater heights. We are lucky to be living through this period in football. Pep has re-invented the game but his main inspiration is the Dutch (Ajax) total football of the 70s. It's bloody amazing. The press in this country don't deserve Pep.

Where are the miseries that stalk this forum - the ones that label those of us that can see things moving in the right direction, as happy clappers ?
Things weren't moving in the right direction during our first 9 games though. Now were they?
Most of the games in our winning run has been against sides that you would be very disappointed if you didn't beat. Theres no denying we have picked up the pace though and thats to be welcomed. Onwards and upwards.
It's all about opinions .
Gloating has a habit of coming back to bite you in the arse.

Every picture tells a story, interesting to see that. Just out of curiosity I put 'Mahrez EXd' and 'Mahrez MP' into Google Translate and both times it came back as 'Mahrez FFS'.
Ha!

For the record I believe EXd is extremo derecho = right wing.

MP = mediapunto = #10 / attacking midfielder / playmaker.

Not want him next in line at Celtic then?

To be fair to Allardyce, he did a tremendous job at Bolton and had them in Europe. He should never have left there to go to Newcastle when he did. Newcastle were (and still are) a mental club, there’s no stability there at all. He had everything going right at Bolton!

Now he’s almost a parody of himself. Barely anyone even remembers his Bolton achievements anymore.

Pep has figured out how to unlock the parked buses once again.

As others have posted. The formation and positional change has enabled us to swamp the midfield while also being defensively covered if the opposition counter.

We can transition from defending with 5/6 players and attack with 7/8 depending on the position of rodders and moving Cancelo and Zin into midfield. All this while the forwards interchange positions.

Accident or not I hope we continue to use this formation/tactics going forward.

False 9 is working a treat.
