Been to The Etihad this evening to have my first jab. My word what an operation they have running there. Incredible organisation and just a constant flow of people moving through. Was even given the date and time of my 2nd dose and had a text through to my phone with all the details before the lady had even finished her sentence!

All settings deaths finally updated to 1245.

6 up on yesterday but 156 down on last Friday.

Still too many tragedies. But could be so much worse given where we were up around 1800 a few days ago.
I was really hoping that today would be down below 1000 deaths, it just seems like a number that has become accepted.

Cheers long may it continue until we get on top of this shit.

A friend of mine I went to school with is miffed. She has loads of underlying health conditions and lives in Brooklands but has been told it could be months for her yet.
That’s a shitter, let’s hope she gets a spare one in the meantime, I have heard that’s happening with left over ones in areas.

We do, finally, nearly 4 weeks after lock down, seem to have passed the peak in reported deaths.

Let us hope they fall as fast as cases have, and let us hope we can keep the pressure on there too.

Most 80 year olds have now been vaccinated, and they constitute half of those dying. Over the next month, we should start to see the death toll drop even faster than the case load has to date, as people becoming exposed no longer become infected, or suffer just mild symptoms.

And let's not lose our compassion and think how it feels in Europe where similar hopes have just taken a huge hit. My parents, vaccinated only yesterday wouldn't get the chance for weeks to come there. Many in their position will die. I hope we can use our privileged position to help in some small way.

Yes I think she comes under Manchester and I'm in Trafford, not sure if that makes any difference.

it will start to drop mate, dont forget the hospitals are still busy, this time next week fingers crossed around half of your figure

To be fair today is one of the most positive days I have had for months, more vaccines being approved, cases are dropping, the lockdown seems to be having a positive effect as well. The Government seems to have their finger on the pulse with the roll out of the vaccines and more and more test facilities opening up.
For the first time I can see a light at the end of the tunnel, it was even light when I came out of work tonight and the thought of spring around the corner.
The number of deaths dropping significantly would be the icing on the cake.

It wasn't a direct go at him more a "Fucking hell!" of surprise at the post. I'd just had my first jab, seen lost of positive stuff then that post popped up lol!
I actually agree with Dave I'm afraid, I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop when we all find out that new variants are resistant and we just go around and around in circles. Obviously I'd hope that's not the case but I'm getting old and (even more) cynical.

BBC Health correspondent said the Novovax vaccine will provide a rocket boost to the UK vaccine programme.

Apparently you need 2 shots. I hope their Stockton plant has a stockpile which can go straight into circulation once authorised. That would be a massive boost.
I would have thought the air around Teesside might have rendered the vaccine null & void

I agree. The worst thing we could do now is regard this as victory over the EU.

There will be no victory for anyone until this world is to as great an extent as possible Covid free.

And Europe may or may not be part of our economic union any more but no vaccine can shift global geography and it will be our neighbour come what may.

We all should care about our neighbours and look out for them if they are in trouble. For that is what humans do in an hour of need.

The one good thing all these sacrificed lives can bring about is a new unity of the planet as this pandemic has exposed the fragility of ideology and politics and rivalry. You only defeat an enemy of the planet by acting together as a planet and laying aside differences and helping one another as best we can.

I would respect our government - not attack them - if they suggested we all get together over zoom and plan a strategy to save lives across Europe and do our bit to share in that not go na nah na nah na to the EU

After we get that sorted Boris should then call Biden and suggest we do the same to protect the rest of the world with a proper strategy of share to save lives.

This is the right way for humanity to behave. And the making or breaking of all leaders as to whether they embrace selflessness or selfishness.
~
Most decent human beings will respect the ones who choose the right path here as nobody wins this war if anybody loses it. And there are still many nations who may do just that even if we can see the first flickers of a Summer's dawn lighting the horizon.

We have positive results now for five (five!!!) vaccines.

They're across three very different technologies.

The only one tested against the variant of most concern remained effective against it.

They can all be readily modified against new variants.

The cost is as little as a fiver (a fiver FFS!!!) for two jabs.

A year ago, nobody would have believed this possible.

We can do this now. The path is clear, we just need to walk it.

Oh, and City are top of the league too!!

I didn't know about the Johnson & Johnson's vaccine as I've been working, okay, that's a plus.

Edit: and I've just seen BGT has been cancelled which is another plus.

Don't worry all the vaccines can be tweaked to counter the new variants. We're close to getting on top of this. The only problem is the idiots that don't want the vaccine and the ones who keep spreading it.

Of which there are many!

I was reading today about the returnees from their jollies in Dubai. One when questioned why she had gone “I just needed some me time”

The main Canadian airlines have suspended all flights to the Caribbean and Mexico until at least the end of April.

Anybody coming into Canada will now have to be tested and show negative results within 72 hours of their flight and will then have to be tested upon arrival into Canada where they will then have to spend at least two nights at a hotel at their cost. They will then have to isolate either at their home or at a government facility.
This is to try to control the new variants that are out there.

I guess I will be buying my own pints for the foreseeable future. @BimboBob @Zin 'messiah' Zimmer @bluegirl74 : (

Appears to depend a lot on luck and location. More than a few already have.

And if priorities change with slower delivery of vaccines as seems imminent as some are lobbying to do once they get to all those 70 and over.

As I understand it if you have underlying issues you are in the next group immediately after the 65 to 70s. If not then the one after that.

I am in 65 to 70 and not expecting a call until around mid February. But you just never know given the reports. And, of course, if in the North West that may be altered because one third of our supply is being diverted down south from Monday.
Mrs B & I are in the same group as you, she was told today that we are in the next group to be called.

Yes, June is looking less and less likely. Especially as I was looking to fly into NY and do the train up to Trono. Luckily everything booked with full insurance. Postpone to 2022? Unless you make it home first obviously.
