Thought Jesus was the best player on the pitch last night. He was involved all game, got around players with some great skill, looked like he enjoyed his role as a wide player (again!), covered loads of ground, worked hard defensively.

Brilliant assist for Torres’ second. Top quality wing play!
This...
I'll add that it was good to see him taking players on, running at defenders, getting to the by-line and putting the ball into the box, just like an old school winger.
We're used to seeing our players constantly checking inside, so this was refreshing to me.
Well played Jesus!

I think he's played RW for Brazil a couple of times as well.

He likes to dribble, and is quite direct, he has better movement outwide than as the striker.

Not clinical enough to play central but always looks very good out wide.

His contract needs renewing, 2 years left.
I respectfully disagree - he's nowhere near Mahrez's ability on the wing.

Jesus is talented - for sure. But I'd rather see him in a backup/supporting role - he's not a first choice striker/winger/whatever IMO.

Should his contract lapse - well, we've lost a talent backup. Not a big deal.

He plays there fulltime for Brazil I believe.
And in this current system it actually suits him better.

The previous system I'd have some doubts because we really utilized Sterling and Sane's speed behind, but now we play more methodically with Foden and Mahrez with the intention of the wingers keeping the ball and allowed to come inside more often, a much better style for him.

It does beg the question though. Why is he still being used up front?

I know it's cliché, but I have to assume that his off the ball stuff as a forward is incredibly important to Pep. His pressing is spoken for, but I'd wager his movement in general is valuable too.

In terms of pressing and link-up play, I think Jesus is always world class here and why he has been used up front.

But then I think... he can do that on the wings too right? Since his dribbling is more natural than his finishing, the wings seems more promising.

On top of that, perhaps when we had Sane-Sterling as the wingers and played in that "style", he was better as our striker, I think the movements we made in that set-up perhaps suited him more in terms of goal scoring.

But in this new set-up, the strikers role is a bit different, and requires more varied movement that perhaps Torres brings. Not entirely sure on this point, just speculating.

There are times where it looks like Pep is turning him into a midfielder, he was playing deep last night but seems happy to mix it up and break play up.

He's been used more as a winger this season than previously, but I'd wager that his movement is still too important. I personally think he's a lot like Bernardo (the midfield one, not the false 9 one), in that he does a lot of unsung work. It's just because he's up front and doesn't have an elite goalscoring record it's not as appreciated.

This setup doesn't suit him goalscoring, I'd agree. But then have any of our players really got a good record when they've been played up front? Most of the goals have come from the players in midfield or on the wing. Except Torres weirdly.

He does have the skills to play on the wing, and he's not being sold. So dependant on who we sign we might see some changes to his position. Although I think if he were to be a winger under Pep it'd have happened already.

I'm not convinced of Torres as a striker. His finishing is really good, but so is Foden's. His positioning is really good, but so is Sterling's. He can still be a great scorer for us but I think his strengths are out wide.

Well we will need a bigger sample size for both in these positions to get a better idea.

Even if it doesn't work (Torres center, Jesus wide), I think these next 2 games are perfect for Pep to experiment with to see if it does carry on. So you may be right that Torres won't be a good 9, but I want to see more to have more evidence.

On Jesus, I'm not one of those who slags him off. Even when he doesn't score I appreciate the other facets to his game that he brings centrally, but think his strengths work equally out wide.

But like you said, all of this depends on what we do in the summer, who comes in or goes, so it will be interesting to see how this develops.

Both Sterling and Jesus are still very useful players to have around.
Is this even true of Sterling in terms of pressing anymore? I used to see him working so much harder defensively even when he was in top form I feel like. You would think it would be the opposite to try to turn his defense into offense.

Nope we are officiated differently. Even if he adopted Fernandes' or Salah's "clever" approach we would get nothing.

Played well and scored, so predictably no comments in his thread. Thought he was excellent today, peach of a goal and seemed to really enjoy himself
His ability to play in basically any attacking position and understanding of the system is invaluable.

No matter what happens with whoever comes in, we need to keep him, he's only going to get better.
