Brighton (A) | Post-Match Thread

Looked like an above the knee “impact” injury that was not responding to “hiving it a run out” and he wanted out.

24 hrs from now, we will know if it’s a thing or not. Ice & rest, plus some massage, and unless it is structural he’s going to be right as rain in a few days. The rest will do him good!
the guy was an absolute **** making a challenge like that in a dead rubber of a game, pretty sure he went in hard on gundoghan earlier in the game too.

This.
Also they claim to get 90% plus of the decisions correct. But what makes me laugh does the Zuma pen on sterling class as the correct decision because they looked at it even though everyone else said it was.
They hide behind var and say they will look at all big decisions. But your chances of getting the decision comes down to the on field decision which some teams in red get while others teams get it the other way round
subjective decision making.

well the ref thing has been done to death.....

Cancelo's defending for the high ball that led to a situation in which he ends up on the floor with Welbeck was pitiful - a big high thump up high and he ends up floating a toe towards it, not a good look.

Garcia was a mess, he got totally skinned umpteen times and basically allowed endless pressure from Brighton left. I sympathise he's a centre half at full back.

Rodri was particularly lackadaisical in the middle, and i thought Fern looked a bit lost as well, we couldn't retain any control with both of them in the middle, which was odd. Sometimes you dont notice we've got 10 men. I appreciate we didnt really win our share of free-kicks.

For a neutral the game was fun, chaotic and better than most dead rubber fayre, but it frustrated me greatly, I thought City were shit in the 2nd half from Foden's excellent goal onwards (other things withstanding). The defending in general was about the worst of the season, i dont want to hide behind the ref for some of that.

Just send the highlights, they dont show much. Two things.

The sending off, welbeck hooks his arm over Cancelo arm/shoulder and pulls him down. City foul.

Brighton winner looked off side but in the highlights didnt show the goal from the side.

I have send the innocent of Foden getting fouled but ref gives nothing within a second Fernandinho does a slight foul. Not as bad as the one on Foden just before. Ref gave Brighton a foul and booked Fernandinho.

From reading on here as I didnt see the match, and what's been posted on here from some parts of the press/media, this match needs investigating.

Something was very wrong with this match. Both VAR and the ref seem bent. Plus when you add in utds goal which was about 5 yards off side, I would say VAR and the refs need investing.

I hate to say it but the more this happens the more I think big betting syndicates are involved.

City are going go need to score at least 3 or 4 every game next season to win 1 nil !.

Funny how one bent game can really piss you of even after the great season City have had. One game I love football , next game I hate it.

I always thought Brighton were a decent club and team. I didnt think Brighton where team of kickers. I thought Brighton played football the correct way.

The question has to be why did Brighton change the style last night ? Were Brighton told to ? Something doesnt add up here.

Brighton did us proud that day we won the league at their place. What happened last night Brighton ? That was so unlike you. Where you ordered to play like that ? Out of the 37 games you have played this season I never had Brighton down as a dirty team. The change in the style was odd. Didnt I read on here that even Brighton manager behaved odd after the first goal, and he later apologised on tweeter.

All very odd.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they need a result at the Etihad to stay up next season, football works like that sometimes, then we’ll see what goes around comes around

I'm not arsed about the result because we're champions, but that was one of the worst refereeing performances of the season. He had zero control over the game, compounded with some dreadful calls and terrible positioning.

We're surely at the point whereby refs need to start being more accountable regarding decisions. Having someone explain the rationale of decisions would be much better than this wall of silence.

It shows how hard it is to play 10 v 11, and Brighton to be fair are a good footballing side. Bissouma in their midfield is quality. Fair play to them for fighting back to win the game, that is no mean feat against the Champions and I am certain those who were there will dine out on it for many a year and grandchildren will be regaled with tales of how they beat the Champions.

Our intensity understandably dropped, it was a game where players would be concerned about picking up injures although again Brighton's incredibly high press made it difficult once we were down to ten to pass through the midfield and having Eddy launch it to our midgets is not ideal when they have man mountain centre halves.

The sending off was an odd one, Cancelo never took his eyes off the ball and it looked more a collision or clever play by Welbeck than foul play but I can see why it was given and it happens. I have no real complaints.

What was disgusting was the challenge on Gundo, that was the straightest of straight reds I have seen all season. The Guardian online described it as a clattering, i describe it as an assault and possible career ending challenge and if Gundo misses the CL Final because of the challenge it does make an absolute mockery of VAR. I was watching Sport4 TV from Portugal and they were amazed it was not a straight red.

Normally i hate criticising Refs but he had a shocker, for both teams and at the end he was handing out cards like it was Christmas for things most refs would ignore. Fernandinho was incensed near the end with the ref and I can understand why. Players want consistency and last night there was none.

What did we learn, not much really, we learnt Garcia can not play RB, he was targeted in the second half and we learnt if it was a Sunday game on a rain sodden Hough End mud bath Bernardo would still be running his bollocks off, and we learnt Foden is getting better and better every game he plays. His goal was beautiful. He runs with the ball so effortlessly and his head is always up looking for options. The lad has really come of age this season.

It was a little strange having fans back and I hope those of you who have been fortunate enough to get tickets for Everton make as much noise as the Brighton fans did.

Not arsed about the result.. just 2 things troubled me.. gundo’s injury and the officiating

the officiating and VAR was quite disturbing and really does raise serious questions
Exactly. Making such a big decision such as a red card over a coming together like that and the ref didn't even bother going to the pitch side monitor - where he would have seen Welbeck instigated contact, wrapped his arm with Cancelo's. Shocking to see at this level. Only the most swivel eyed fan would think of that as a red.

Same with the knee high foul on Gundog; a yellow for a foul that could have put a player out for months is ridiculous.

I think it is about time that fans get to hear the communications between ref and VAR officials like in rugby.

Watched the replay a few times and still can't see a penalty and red card for Cancelo. He looked to be off balance and Wellbeck fell into him. Poor decision by VAR and the spineless referee.

What about the clean out of Jesus by Lallama ? Penalty ? Definately.

Hope they need to play us next season to avoid relegation and we club them. Could have put Gundo out of the cup final.

Ridiculous decision, one of many, if She's was a penalty against Newcastle this is even more so. Also there is a video showing Wellbeck clipping Cancello',s heel which is one of the reasons he went to ground.

Just watched highlights again, the ref was abysmal but defensively we were shocking, it was like watching us last season at our worst.

I couldn't believe how bad we were at the back, we made Brighton look like peak Barcelona at times the way they terrified our defence. I guess having ten men and Garcia at right back didn't help. I've watched Brighton a lot this season and they've battered lots of teams but just couldn't score. Unfortunately last night they did.

does anyone know what the hell went on between Potter and our coaching staff at the final whistle. I have never seen us react like that. Pep also always speaks very highly of Potter. Strange.
