Chelsea thread 2020/21

And just like that my opinion of Tuchel has gone down. He's not fit to place Pep's boots. Never in a million years would you hear Pep play down a competition to be subservient to the board.

The team Pep put out in the semi final was not exactly a glowing endorsement of the competition.

Like it or not, Champions league participation is far bigger that winning the FA Cup.

If Leicester or Chelsea were to end up out of the top 4 it would be a serious blow to them,

Pep did make 9 changes to the FA Cup team because he was more interested in finishing off the league title and winning a CL semi-final than winning the FA Cup. They have both done the same thing, I don't see a meaningful difference other than Tuchel openly admits it - and Pep got pretty close when he told everyone the ranking of the competitions this season.

Also I think it's pretty unfair to compare Pep and Tuchel's ability to stand up to their respective bosses. Pep is in a situation where the entire club is begging him to stay as long as possible and their full time mission is to keep him happy. Tuchel has an 18 month contract and arrived 3 months ago.

Exactly, If Tommy T misses out on top 4 and we beat them in the final and he starts next season poorly, he will be out, that's the way Chelsea operate.

Sure, but he's done this after also dominating domestically countless times and winning loads of these trophies. Pep has proven that he takes them seriously. We all know that he sets out to try and win everything, plus once again he's never implicitly said that it isn't important. There are a loads of different ways of answering that question that doesn't play down the competition and make you sound like a yes man. Pep wouldn't do it. I dunno, it just feels like there are very few trophy-obsessed serial winners around these days with managers all too willing to play down a trophy to maintain their image. It's just excuses to play down a defeat. Congratulate Leicester, say you're disappointed and you're focused on what you've got to play for, move on. I don't get what playing down the FA Cup accomplishes, other than teaching the players that it doesn't matter to lose in those comps.

It tells everyone that he wanted to win more than anything it but was told by his bosses that he had to prioritise other things.

Because he is a trophy obsessed serial winner, but he's not the one trophy obsessed serial winner in a job where his bosses worship the ground he walks on and lets him do whatever he wants.

Personally disagree. Even then, if so - how will the players react to that? IMO, they'll decide that next season the Carabao and FA Cup isn't important. I don't think that is ever really logical for a club with Chelsea's squad and I think it's a dangerous precedent to set. I dunno man, just not sure it was the right thing to say at all. It never sits comfortably with me at all.

Edit - maybe im just overreacting. I do just genuinely get tired of this new bunch of coaches always playing down trophies.

I think players are capable of seeing the situation Chelsea are in and saying "OK this year we have to prioritise the CL, and next year when Tuchel's not arrived midseason we'll be comfortably in the top 4 and able to go for everything".

They don't play down trophies but the clubs owners insist on top 4, it worth 30 million plus, football clubs are businesses at the end of the day, balance sheets rightly or wrongly are as important as trophies.

Her attitude when she's interviewed is appalling. Especially when she was linked to a league 2 club. Total disrespect.

I’ve smiled twice this week when hearing a result. One was Emma Hayes, the other Karl Robinson. Both equally dislikable people who have high opinions of themselves.

Hayes in particular when she thought the Wimbledon job was beneath her was staggering

What a cock
You lost the big game, just accept it
He’ll use same excuse next week....I hope!
