I think Fern has been one of our best and most important players ever but always wonder what would have happened if he had not had to sacrifice his attacking capabalities to allow others to take the limelight. When he first joined he did the work of two midfielders to allow Yaya full reign and after that became the defensive lynchpin to allow Silva and KdB to work their magic.

His two assists for Kun show that he has the skills to play a more attacking role. I guess we should just be grateful for his selfless play and appreciate what he has done.

He is unique. His mind is pretty much faster than any other midfielder can run. And as a technical footballer he is light years ahead of even the likes of Kante, Fabinho, Makelele, Keane, etc

Forget about dropping off - I honestly think he's getting better. There will come a point where he does physically decline, of course, but I just can't see that now until he's into his late 30s. Plenty of other great athletes to use as a comparison to, particularly boxers - many can go into late 30s and still perform at a very highly, then usually once into their 40s you see a drop off.

He's always been clever and one step ahead, but now it's looks like he's wised up even more to become two or three steps ahead. Freak of nature really. A ridiculously good footballer that we have been incredibly lucky to have play for us.

This is the massive advantage in not having to play him into the ground anymore. 12 league starts this season is absolutely ideal for a player of his quality at his age

Out of all of our key players over the last ten years, I really do think he’ll be the hardest to replace. To be able to play Silva and De Bruyne in midfield, and likewise Foden and De Bruyne today, is only possible when Fernandinho is behind.

For me, we’ve had four legends a notch above the rest and that’s Fernandinho, Silva, Kompany and Aguero.
That’s my view as well.

Think everyone was convinced he was going to start this evening, so perhaps his omission was an attempt to hoodwink Tuchel. However, given how poorly he played against Chelsea’s midfield in the FA Cup semi-final, then perhaps it shouldn’t have been such a surprise to us.

Does raise an interesting question. If Guardiola doesn’t trust him enough to play him in such a game, then should we really be extending his contract, or should we be looking for a younger player this summer? I know he is a model pro and has had a great season, yet again, but if I pit aside all sentimentality, I’m not 100% convinced.

It’s an even bigger problem if Pep doesn’t trust him OR Rodri to start that game

Deserved a starting place, both on form and the fact he allows others more freedom and to play their game.He is also our Captain, and we missed that influence.

Utterly disrespectful not to start him tonight given his experience and what he brings to the team

Utterly disrespectful to simply not start your captain in a final like this, let alone a guy who's long being one of the best in his position, still is, and has been central to our success for close to a decade.

With Lahoz refeering the final you could of see why Fernandinho didn't start but should of been introduced more sooner than he was

Thought the ref was brilliant. Dinho made a yellow card tackle almost immediately after coming on and Lahoz let it slide.
The thing with Lahoz is that there is no predicting what he will allow. Regular viewers of La Liga will tell you- some days he allows anything and everything, and then other days he allows fuck all. Rightly or wrongly, that risk, combined with how Fernandinho looked in his last start against Chelsea, probably made Pep go with Gundo instead.

I'd be fuming if I was Fernandinho.

Dropped for a terribly out of form Sterling in the clubs biggest ever match.

As captain, I really hope he takes Pep to one side and privately gives him both barrels for leaving him out and Pep allows him to do that with no comeback. And I mean that as a "why are you leaving out the holding midfielder" way rather than a "I'm captain I deserve to play" arrogant way.

I think Pep really needs to hear that from somebody.

ideally it would be one of his backroom staff that does it but seemingly none of them will do that as you'd imagine they already would have before kick off when he decided on that crazy formation if they were going to and it can't really come from khaldoon as it comes across as him trying to tell Pep how to do his job which means the obvious guy is the club captain.

No you can't. You can if you invent a story in your head that the refs out to get you.

there's no reasoning whatsoever.
