Covid and travel discussion

Going away this Sunday for 3 days in Durham courtesy of the kids for a belated 70th treat with hotel and all meals paid for by them.Great.
Any ideas for sights to see folks ?
Mr & Mrs Oakiecokie. ;)
Alnwick Castle just up the road

Beamish museum was a great day out before the pandemic.
Don’t know how much it will have opened up by now.

There's also the Durham Dales south of where you are staying. Beautiful with some lovely waterfalls near Middleton, about 25 miles south.

Whitley Bay has a nice beach and a lighthouse you can go up.

Would love to go to our regular hotel on Rhodes and see friends over there, may still try in Sept/Oct depending on the world but, looking forward to a night in Market Rasen for the racing on Friday, a week with the lads in Wales mid June and a week at my lads new house in Abingdon, not seen him apart from in a car park once since pre Xmas.

If you want a bit of a traditional British beach resort day go to Sea Houses also get boat trips from there to the Farne island, but avoid Spittal we booked 2 nights there on our way back from a break in Scotland what a fucking dump one pub open full of scrotes, no where to eat unless you go into Berwick which isn't much better

We`re staying at Hardwick Hall Hotel, Sedgefield but I havn`t yet checked out if its this side of Durham (south for us).
Never been to Whitley Bay so may give that a whirl also.
Thanks for all the update BB much appreciated.
You can't go wrong north of Newcastle, there's so many stunning and interesting places to go to!

Whitley Bay is nice and now they've renovated Spanish City, it's got a great seafront. If you've got time, you could start at "The Coastline" chippy at Blyth and drive south through Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and into Tynemouth. Plenty of nice boozers and places to eat especially in Tynemouth. There is a pub in Tynemouth called the Gibraltar Rock with great views out onto the sea.

If you're into good chippys, the "Fish Quay" in North Shields has quite a few restaurants/chippys which are just superb too.

If you're into beaches, it's great. They are all huge, empty and clean! Even Tynemouth beach will be pretty empty, but Seaton Sluice is a favourite - big dunes, clean and deserted most of the time. You could do a decent few miles walking on them.

I'd recommend Newcastle as well around the river, it's stunning around there and also have a walk up Grey St too.

If you go north of Newcastle, Alnwick, Hexham, Warkworth, Bambourough Castle and Amble are all great places. I don't think I've seen anywhere as quintessentially English as Warkworth in summer - stunning! They are always pretty quiet too - for some reason, no one in England knows about Northumberland! The North East is stunning.

Beamish is about 22 miles north of where you are staying. Middleton In Tees where there are some lovely waterfalls is around 40 minutes west of you. Whitby is only an hour away as well. If you want a beach then Saltburn is a nice place. No idea if they still have the cliff lift though. Richmond, which is rather nice and has a lovely castle, is 30 minutes drive south of you.

Oh...obviously you can visit the Angel of the North. Park up, have a wander.
