Its understandable as the price for either Haaland or Kane will be our budget for the summer pretty much. I’d love to see Grealish at City, but it’s not like we’re struggling in that position and we’ve got some great prospects in the academy.

Feel slightly sad if we are not in for Grealish. I have no strong opinion on the player but @FantasyIreland had me getting giddy at the prospect.

Moving players out I think is going to be our biggest issue. City seems like a great place to play football and the players are well looked after and respected. Why would you leave that for Arsenal or Tottenham? Absolute disrespect intentended

A few have suggested that. Feels so weak to me. I'd be telling us to fuck off with that one.

You won't pay us 25m for a player you don't want, to give us say 20m less for a player you do want. Ooh big threat that.

It has nothing to do with weak or strong for me. It's just business. We get so conditioned by the numbers being meaningless that we forget that someone is actually in charge of the numbers. If they can save 10/15 million on every player they try and sign over a five year period that's a huge amount.

Also it's not really a threat from Villa's POV. It's a conversation that two executives would have. From Villa's POV in planning for next season you will have asked City if they're buying Luiz back. That would, I imagine, be City's "in" to discuss how they could get a Grealish discount.

Again this is sort of moot as it's not happening, but it's just more interesting for me in terms of understanding the way we operate our player trading department.

Yeah tbf I was discussing it as a theoretical. I honestly never saw any sense in it as a bargaining peice in any meaningful capacity. If it was a sell-on, that would have balue and I could see that. A buy-back though, I honestly can't see any merit in it at all.

As you say, completely moot though. From next week probably realistically irrelevant as well.

A buy back clause has an inherent financial value which is Free market price - buy back price.

At the moment, in this market, after a pretty average season Luiz probably isn't worth much more than the £20m for the buy back, maybe £30m at the absolute maximum. So the value of the buyback clause is going to be <£10m.

So I don't think there's going to be any meaningful discount whatever happens with the clause.

I disagree. IF Bissouma is valued at 35/40 - Luiz is valued at a similar level IMO.

I’d say there is value in it. Maybe not a lot but there is definitely some. He is worth more than his release clause. They could sell him for a higher fee than the clause we have set.

Also, Douglas Luiz is an important player for them. If we snap him up for 20m, they have to go out and get a replacement. Could they get one who is of a similar level for less than 20m? Perhaps, but then there’s a new player who has to be bought and integrated into the team.
