Covid and travel discussion

Personally I can't think of anywhere I'd rather not be than an international airport right now.

why not? Just watching the news now and UK airports are fucking deserted - far safer than Greggs on your local High Street !! Don't fly anywhere just live in the departure lounge lol

I'd say they were reckless if they didn't appreciate that traffic lights change - I'd love to be abroad right now having just retired but I am not silly enough to think that given the way that this thing spreads to go away for a fortnight then there was a risk it may not be green in 2 weeks time.

If you're vaccinated, get yourself away pal. The only thing that's stopping most of us is work in the morning and/or the tests and quarantine situation. Enjoy your retirement, hope you manage to get away soon.

You might be able to get away but nowhere is open, or very little. I got away to Tenerife last summer and things were picking up. After three days our government put it back on the quarantine list and everyone rushed back home to beat the quarantine. Very few bars were open as a result, or hotels. They won't open until the majority of the Brits get back out as it's not worth their while

Well you have to change your approach to the holiday, go hiking, read a book, chill out in your apartmen, unwind. Sounds pretty chill to me

It depends what people want from their holiday. People don't spend good money to change their approach, or make do with a limited holiday, unless they want to of course.

nah you are alright - despite the threat to myself and my wife I also value my as yet unvaccinated children in their 20's one of whom lives with us and my mother and father in law and my dad all three of whom are aged and vulnerable and double vaccinated against the threat that we know of - I'd hate to come back and feel under the weather having tested positive for the delta variant whilst killing my 2 kids and their grand parents - I have done a cost benefit analysis and it is not good.

Reading the thread about our fans experience flying in and out of Porto puts me off going anywhere any time soon cos no matter how careful a person maybe they can’t help getting caught up in situations that before they know it are putting themselves at risk.
Herded off planes and packed like sardines onto buses that didn’t move for 3 hours etc.
And this was in a Green country that desperately wants to see us British flocking there for holidays any time soon.
I hate to say it but I can’t see an end to this pandemic whilst this sort of thing is going on.

I don't understand this perpetual need for Brits to go overseas on holidays.
There are tons of interesting beautiful and historic places to visit in the UK.

Our borders are shut in Australia and will be for a long time yet and I don't hear people moaning about not being able to leave the country.
Surely people in the UK should be supporting the tourist industry in your country they have had it tough and need your support.
Support the British economy with your holiday money.

It's bad enough visiting an airport when times are normal you get treated like an idiot by people who have no sense of humour, at the moment it's 10 times worse I wouldn't go anywhere near an airport and I wouldn't risk going overseas thinking of all the shit it could cause me.

I think you have to consider Porto as a bit of an anomaly, particularly for those on the day trip where many planes were coming and going around the same time. It did sound a little chaotic but it can be hard to keep thousands upon thousands of people apart....even harder to do once alcohol is thrown into the mix too.

I arrived Friday evening and it was fine; my flight was pretty full but got through passport control quickly enough.

Flew back Weds morning and the airport was a breeze; straight through security, empty departure lounge, row to myself on the flight.

Most of my airport experiences from last year we're similar. I think people imagine airports to be rammed and flights full to bursting but it's generally not the case, certainly in my experiences.

Horses for courses though and if the airport/plane exercise really puts anyone off then of course it makes sense to stay put until you're happy to do it again.

I can completely understand.

Don't get me wrong, there are indeed plenty of lovely places around the UK, and lots of nice areas to explore.

But when you factor in the variable weather even in the height of summer, the often horrendous prices, the fact that most people will spend the vast majority of their time in this country....suddenly holidaying at home can lose it's appeal.

I spend 95%+ of my time in the UK....I don't get much holiday time, and when I do get it I sure as hell don't wanna use it in the place where I spend the rest of my time.

That's the beauty of travel....you can do as much or as little as your time, money and inclination allows.

Very tempted to book malta there's a return flight for 19 pound for a week at the end of the month, anyone been before?

Yes but what I mean is that every year you go overseas for your holidays, I'm not complaining about that but were in a pandemic at the moment and surely it would be a good opportunity to help the British economy and have a holiday in the UK for a change.
I've done loads of great things in the UK when I've come over there things like driving the coast of Wales, visiting castles, gentle hiking on the Pennine way/ North Yorkshire moors. Coastal paths of Cornwall etc. Scotland.

Just accept for a couple of years not to go overseas.

I'm with you, holidays in this country are on the whole overpriced shite. I'm sure loads will pile onto the thread extolling the virtues of our great British isles, well they can have them. Unpredictable mainly poor weather, queues a mile long to get into places, rip off prices for often poor quality food and drink and crap uninterested service. Last year I went to Scarborough and Whitby. This year I've had days out in Blackpool, Chester and a few days in Wales. Now you'd think after crying for so long about not being allowed to open and with a mainly captive audience these businesses would pull out all the stops to convince people to stay here, even when holidays abroad are back on the agenda. In my opinion they've just reinforced my belief to get the hell out of here at the first availability opportunity.

The British climate is so unpredictable because we are an island off shore of a mainland mass which means a lot of damp dismal weather arrives here at the worst times.
We work very long hours for very poor pay so cheap food and drink in the sun is appealing.
UK holidays are expensive. High rent and rates costs for the businesses providing the place to stay - high overheads because oddly enough the workers providing it are afforded the same minimum standards of pay conditions and protection that the holiday maker will be.
The UK has never valued those who provide the service.....waiting on tables, bar work etc has never had the kudos that it has elsewhere - its been mostly considered part time pocket money work for students etc and the levels of service can reflect this.
UK airports will be bad enough - however arriving at your EU destination as a citizen of a 3rd country will see most people off in my view.
Just some of the reasons why people want to holiday abroad and why its going to be less attractive anyway - throw into that mix the UK holiday industry hasn't the capacity for millions of new customers at the drop of a hat and thats the shit it will cause people here.

Ok, you're beginning to convince me. Hahaha

You missed sat in a car in traffic with nowhere to park. This is after the weather probably the biggest factor for me anyway if going on holiday abroad.

Australia has space to move around that we don't.

What about the parts of the British economy such as the travel industry that supports hundreds of thousands of jobs? Just let them fail and disappear?
