Covid and travel discussion

It’s 3, because they never intended to do as they said previously but didn’t want you to know their true intention.

data shows vaccine protects self and significantly reduces infection also (more to come as early days) so I’ll take my chances.

it’s not for you to pompously pontificate over the choice of others “off you pop”, delightful.
Off you pop. I'm sure you, your family and your friends won't get infected. Have a lovely time. You've waited over a year. You deserve it.

I was reading earlier that even if a “Green” country, you would still need Covid Tests before going and before returning at considerable cost and presumably if one of you tests positive before returning home, then you would need to stay, quarantine in that country at your cost and find alternative flights home? Quite a costly gamble that isn’t it! We have one booked for Aug rearranged from last year but I look at this and am swaying towards cancelling and losing the deposit.
I'd wait mate. Only cancel if it goes ahead.

In the same boat mate and was thinking of cancelling but hoping to force the hand of the travel company and with any luck they'll call it off and give us our deposit back, eventually.

Although the various details have yet to come out in the wash, even 'straightforward' foreign holidays this summer are unlikely to be anything but straightforward.

It will undoubtedly put a lot of people off, very understandably too, as holidays are supposed to be relatively relaxing.

For those inclined to head abroad, I think there could well be some bargains to be had, but people will need to weigh up all the possible eventualities; risk vs reward.

Anyone unsure should probably stay home and play it safe, maybe revisit it over winter or summer 2022.

Yes that’s what I think. There are some good deals but we paid last years prices so ours isn’t a good deal and if anything went wrong as I’ve described I could be adding £2k plus to my bill plus would probably need to book an extra week off work on return just in case. It just doesn’t seem worth it.

Actually on the whole prices are up 20% on 2019. They’re going to have to make up their losses somehow.
It will be interesting to see how the various companies treat the three lights.
Presumably green will be holidays going but will amber be package holidays cancelled and flight only bookings still going?
Up to now any isolation as per amber have resulted in package holidays being cancelled and lots of other flights too. If amber means the holiday goes ahead then that potentially leaves to some difficult decisions.
the decent holiday companies allowed for booking alterations with no fee of course

Obviously a lot needs clarifying, however based on some experiences from last summer I think the following will be broadly accurate or close.

Green...crack on. Likely at least one test going or coming back, more likely testing at both ends but assuming both are negative then all good.

Red....package holidays will be cancelled to these destinations. Some flight only will possibly still continue, and in that instance a change or voucher from the airline might be the best outcome someone can hope for.

Edit...maybe not, this from the TUI website....I still think when it comes to it that red list holidays are more likely to be cancelled though, as red list could well be against FCDO advice so no tour ops will go against that.

Amber...because amber is, if believed, isolation at home on return then I think package holidays will still go ahead. If it's also isolation for a prolonged period in resort then it would likely be cancelled, but if it is indeed just home isolation upon return to UK then I doubt the tour ops will outright cancel holidays.
They will likely offer a free change so anyone caught up in amber can at least amend to a later date without penalty but in terms of cancellations and refunds I'm not sure that will happen. Flight only likely to go ahead 'as normal'.

If above is true or close enough in a round about way, amber is gonna cause us a massive fucking headache in the industry, not least because so many people moved bookings from last summer to this summer in the hope things would be back to normal by then.

Yet again we await further instruction, thanks in no part to Boris who said recently he'd have an update for us today and all we got was the usual waffle.
If we get the same waffle from the travel task force team next week then I'm giving up.

Yep, can’t see airlines (Ryanair apart) wanting to send half empty planes given most will cancel/amend to avoid quarantine at home in amber.
